Abstract

An endpoint stores information objects to a director, rather than to local storage, and stores links to information objects stored by the director. The devices may also automatically construct information objects from files upon creation of the files. An example endpoint device includes a processing unit configured to determine a file type for a file to be stored, wherein the file comprises an unstructured data object, and automatically append metadata to the file to create an information object based on the determined file type, wherein an information object comprises a structured data object having a structure that is consistent with a uniform structure for files as used by a director device, and a network interface configured to send the information object to the director device for storage, wherein the processing unit is configured to store a link to the information object stored by the director device.

Claims

1. A method comprising:

determining, with a computing device, a file type for a file to be stored, wherein the file comprises an unstructured data object;

automatically appending, with the computing device, metadata to the file to create an information object based on the determined file type, wherein an information object comprises a structured data object having a structure that is consistent with a uniform structure for files as used by a director device;

sending, with the computing device, the information object to the director device for storage; and

storing, with the computing device, a link to the information object stored by the director device.

2. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

determining a policy that applies to the file based on the determined file type;

constructing policy data based on the policy; and

appending the policy data to the information object.

The method of claim 2, wherein the policy specifies a period of retention for the file, wherein constructing the policy data comprises calculating a date on which the file can be deleted, and wherein appending the policy data comprises including a representation of the calculated date within the information object.

4. The method of claim 3, further comprising:

receiving a request to delete the information object before the date on which the file can be deleted; and

in response to the request to delete the information object, deleting the link to the information object from the computing device without deleting the information object from the director device.

5. The method of claim 2, wherein the policy specifies a workflow to be performed following creation of the information object, the method further comprising automatically executing the workflow after the information object is stored.

6. The method of claim 5, wherein the workflow comprises checking the information object for a keyword specified by a keyword alert, and wherein executing the workflow comprises:

determining whether a portion of the information object matches the keyword specified by the keyword alert; and

when the portion of the information object is determined to match the keyword, sending an alert to an administrator.

7. The method of claim 1, further comprising receiving a selection of a directory in which to store the file, wherein storing the link to the information object comprises storing the link within the selected directory.

8. The method of claim 7, further comprising sending a copy of a structure for the directory to the director device.

9. The method of claim 7, further comprising determining a policy associated with the directory, wherein storing the link comprises storing the link in accordance with the policy associated with the directory.

10. The method of claim 7, further comprising retrieving a structure for the directory from the director device before storing the link within the selected directory.

11. The method of claim 1, further comprising storing the information object within a local computer readable medium of the computing device.

12. The method of claim 1, wherein the file type for the file comprises at least one of an electronic mail message, a text document, a spreadsheet document, an image, video data, and music data.

13. The method of claim 1, wherein automatically appending metadata to the file comprises appending metadata that includes an identifier of an author of the file and an identification of the computing device.

14. A method comprising:

determining, with a director device, a file type for a file to be stored, wherein the file comprises an unstructured data object;

automatically appending, with the director device, metadata to the file to create an information object based on the determined file type, wherein an information object comprises a structured data object having a structure that is consistent with a uniform structure for files as used by the director device; and

storing, with the director device, the information object.

15. The method of claim 14, further comprising receiving the file from an endpoint device.

16. The method of claim 14, further comprising sending a link to the endpoint device, wherein the link is directed to the endpoint device.

17. The method of claim 14, further comprising:

determining a policy that applies to the file based on the determined file type;

constructing policy data based on the policy; and

appending the policy data to the information object.

18. The method of claim 17, wherein the policy specifies a period of retention for the file, wherein constructing the policy data comprises calculating a date on which the file can be deleted, and wherein appending the policy data comprises including a representation of the calculated date within the information object.

19. The method of claim 18, further comprising:

receiving a request to delete the information object; and

deleting the information object only when the request is received after the date on which the file can be deleted.

20. The method of claim 19, further comprising decrementing a link counter in response to the request to delete the information object, wherein deleting the information object comprises deleting the information object only when the request is received after the date on which the file can be deleted and when the link counter is equal to zero.

21. The method of claim 14, further comprising:

receiving an indication of a directory in which a user attempted to store the file; and

storing the indication as metadata of the information object, wherein the indication is stored as being associated with an identifier for the user.

22. An endpoint device comprising:

a processing unit configured to determine a file type for a file to be stored, wherein the file comprises an unstructured data object, and automatically append metadata to the file to create an information object based on the determined file type, wherein an information object comprises a structured data object having a structure that is consistent with a uniform structure for files as used by a director device; and

a network interface configured to send the information object to the director device for storage,

wherein the processing unit is configured to store a link to the information object stored by the director device.

23. The endpoint device of claim 22, wherein the processing unit is configured to determine a policy that applies to the file based on the determined file type, construct policy data based on the policy, and append the policy data to the information object.

24. The endpoint device of claim 23, wherein the policy specifies a period of retention for the file, wherein to construct the policy data, the processing unit is configured to calculate a date on which the file can be deleted, and wherein to append the policy data, the processing unit is configured to include a representation of the calculated date within the information object.

25. The endpoint device of claim 24, wherein, in response to receiving a request to delete the information object before the date on which the file can be deleted, the processing unit is configured to delete the link to the information object from the computing device without deleting the information object from the director device.

26. The endpoint device of claim 23, wherein the policy specifies a workflow to be performed following creation of the information object, and wherein the processing unit is configured to automatically execute the workflow after the information object is stored.

27. The endpoint device of claim 26, wherein the workflow comprises checking the information object for a keyword specified by a keyword alert, and wherein to execute the workflow, the processing unit is configured to determine whether a portion of the information object matches the keyword specified by the keyword alert and, when the portion of the information object is determined to match the keyword, to send an alert to an administrator.

28. The endpoint device of claim 22, wherein the processing unit is configured to receive a selection of a directory in which to store the file, wherein to store the link to the information object, the processing unit is configured to store the link within the selected directory.

29. The endpoint device of claim 28, wherein the processing unit is configured to send a copy of a structure for the directory to the director device.

30. The endpoint device of claim 28, wherein the processing unit is configured to determine a policy associated with the directory, wherein to store the link, the processing unit is configured to store the link in accordance with the policy associated with the directory.

31. The endpoint device of claim 28, wherein the processing unit is configured to retrieve a structure for the directory from the director device before storing the link within the selected directory.

32. The endpoint device of claim 22, further comprising a computer-readable storage medium, wherein to store the link, the processing unit is configured to store the link within the computer-readable storage medium.

33. The endpoint device of claim 22, wherein the file type for the file comprises at least one of an electronic mail message, a text document, a spreadsheet document, an image, video data, and music data.

34. The endpoint device of claim 22, wherein the processing unit is configured to append metadata that includes an identifier of an author of the file and an identification of the computing device to the file when automatically appending the metadata to the file.

35. A system comprising:

a director device comprising a computer-readable storage medium, wherein the director device is configured to store information objects in the computer-readable storage medium that conform to a uniform structure; and

an endpoint device comprising;

a processing unit configured to determine a file type for a file to be stored, wherein the file comprises an unstructured data object, and automatically append metadata to the file to create an information object based on the determined file type, wherein the information object conforms to the uniform structure of the director device; and

a network interface configured to send the information object to the director device for storage,

wherein the processing unit is configured to store a link to the information object stored by the director device.

36. A computer-readable storage medium encoded with instructions that cause a processor of an endpoint device to:

determine a file type for a file to be stored, wherein the file comprises an unstructured data object;

automatically append metadata to the file to create an information object based on the determined file type, wherein an information object comprises a structured data object having a structure that is consistent with a uniform structure for files as used by a director device;

cause a network interface of the endpoint device to send the information object to the director device for storage; and

store a link to the information object stored by the director device.

37. A computer-readable storage medium encoded with instructions that cause a processor of a director device to:

determine a file type for a file to be stored, wherein the file comprises an unstructured data object;

automatically append metadata to the file to create an information object based on the determined file type, wherein an information object comprises a structured data object having a structure that is consistent with a uniform structure for files as used by the director device; and

store the information object.
