Abstract

Systems and methods to manage database data are provided. A particular method includes automatically identifying a plurality of storage devices. The storage devices include a first device of a first type and a second device of a second type. The first type includes a solid state memory device. The method may further identify a high priority data set of the database. A rebalancing operation is conducted that includes moving the high priority data set to the solid state memory device and substantially evening distribution of other data of the database among the storage devices.

Claims

1. A computer program product comprising:

a computer readable medium having computer readable program code embodied therewith, the computer readable program code comprising;

program code executable by the computer to identify a plurality of storage devices, the plurality of storage devices including a first device of a first type and a second device of a second type, wherein the first type includes a solid state memory device;

program code executable by the computer to identify a high priority data set of the database; and

program code executable by the computer to conduct a rebalancing operation that includes moving the high priority data set to the solid state memory device and substantially evening distribution of other data of the database with respect to the plurality of storage devices.

2. The computer program product of claim 1, wherein the solid state memory device includes a solid state drive.

3. The computer program product of claim 1, wherein the second type includes a hard disk drive.

4. The computer program product of claim 1, wherein the first device and the second device each include non-volatile memory.

5. A computer program product comprising:

a computer readable medium having computer readable program code embodied therewith, the computer readable program code comprising;

program code executable by the computer to identify a plurality of different types of storage disks storing database data and including a solid state drive;

program code executable by the computer to identify a high priority data set of the database data; and

program code executable by the computer to conduct a rebalancing operation that includes moving the high priority data set to the solid state drive and substantially evenly distributing the database data other than the high priority data set among the plurality of storage disks.

6. The computer program product of claim 5, wherein the computer readable program further causes the computer to move a lower priority data set of the database data to a hard disk drive of the plurality of storage disks.

7. The computer program product of claim 5, wherein the computer readable program further causes the computer to move the high priority data set to a first object container on the solid state drive from a second object container on the hard disk drive.

8. The computer program product of claim 5, wherein the rebalancing operation further comprises creating a new object container associated with the solid state drive.

9. The computer program product of claim 5, wherein the computer readable program further causes the computer to initiate the rebalancing operation in response to a memory device addition to or a memory device removal from the plurality of storage devices.

10. The computer program product of claim 5, wherein the computer readable program further causes the computer to maintain a rule directory that includes storage specifications associated with the plurality of storage devices, the rule directory used to automatically select a storage device appropriate for allocation of database data during the rebalancing operation.

11. The computer program product of claim 5, wherein the rebalancing operation further comprises a selection of the solid state drive for storing the high priority data set based on an expected performance characteristic including energy savings or data access time.

12. The computer program product of claim 5, wherein the rebalancing operation further comprises maintaining a striping of the high priority data set.

13. The computer program product of claim 5, wherein the computer readable program further causes the computer to determine the high priority data set based upon historical data indicating frequency of use.

14. The computer program product of claim 5, wherein the computer readable program further causes the computer to maintain a catalog recording database data location and access frequency information.

15. The computer program product of claim 5, wherein the computer readable program further causes the computer to determine the high priority data set by reading an indicator logically associated with the high priority data set.

16. The computer program product of claim 5, wherein the high priority data set comprises at least one of bootstrap data, user-specified data, or time-intensive data.

17. The computer program product of claim 5, wherein the computer readable program further causes the computer to determine a presence of a lock associated with the high priority data set.

18. The computer program product of claim 5, wherein the computer readable program further causes the computer to delay moving the high priority data set until detecting that the lock associated with the high priority data set has been removed.

19. The computer program product of claim 5, wherein the computer readable program further causes the computer to identify the plurality of different types of storage disks using an application programming interface.

20. The computer program product of claim 5, wherein the computer readable program further causes the computer to query an added storage disk using an application programming interface to determine a performance attribute of the added storage disk.

21. An apparatus comprising:

a processor; and

a memory accessible to the processor, the memory including;

a plurality of storage devices, wherein the plurality of storage devices includes a first device of a first type and a second device of a second type; and

instructions executable by the processor, the instructions configured to prompt the processor to identify the plurality of storage devices, to identify a high priority data set of the database, and to conduct a rebalancing operation that includes moving the high priority data set to the solid state memory device and substantially evening distribution of other data of the database among the plurality of storage devices.

22. The apparatus of claim 21, wherein the storage device of the first type includes one of a solid state drive or phase change disk drive.

23. The apparatus of claim 21, wherein the instructions are further configured to prompt the processor to conduct the rebalancing operation while the plurality of storage devices is online.

24. A method of managing database data, the method comprising:

identifying a plurality of storage devices, wherein the plurality of storage devices includes a first device of a first type and a second device of a second type, wherein the first type includes a solid state memory device;

determining a high priority data set of the database; and

conducting a rebalancing operation that includes moving the high priority data set to the solid state memory device and substantially evening distribution of other data of the database with respect to the plurality of storage devices.

25. The method of claim 24, further comprising moving a lower priority data set of the database to the second device, wherein the second device includes a hard disk drive.
