Abstract

Various embodiments of a secretion collection and/or sample analysis device are provided for point-of-care collection and/or analysis of secretions collected from the airways of intubated patients. The disclosed embodiments include a variety of placements of the device with respect to a tracheal tube that include in a secretion reservoir, between an evacuation conduit and the secretion reservoir, and connected in series after the evacuation conduit and the secretion reservoir. Certain embodiments may include a lab-on-a-chip device that analyzes secretions via polymerase chain reaction (PCR) based DNA sequencing.

Claims

1. A tracheal intubation system comprising:

a tracheal tube configured to allow airflow to and from a patient;

an evacuation conduit configured to receive aspirated secretions from a suction lumen;

a secretion reservoir configured to receive aspirated secretions from the evacuation conduit; and

a secretion sample collection and/or analysis device in fluid communication with the evacuation conduit.

2. The tracheal intubation system of claim 1, comprising a suction device configured to apply vacuum to the evacuation conduit such that the aspirated secretions are drawn through the suction lumen and the evacuation conduit.

3. The tracheal intubation system of claim 1, wherein the secretion sample collection and/or analysis device is located in the secretion reservoir.

4. The tracheal intubation system of claim 1, wherein the secretion sample collection and/or analysis device is connected in series with the secretion reservoir and the evacuation conduit.

5. The tracheal intubation system of claim 1, wherein the secretion sample collection and/or analysis device is a lab-on-a-chip.

6. The tracheal intubation system of claim 1, wherein the secretion sample collection and/or analysis device is configured to perform a polymerase chain reaction.

7. The tracheal intubation system of claim 1, wherein the secretion sample collection and/or analysis device is configured to indicate a presence or absence of pathogens at a point-of-care.

8. The tracheal intubation system of claim 1, comprising an analysis system configured to receive the secretion sample collection and/or analysis device, perform an analysis, and output results of the analysis at a point-of-care.

9. A tracheal tube auxiliary system comprising:

a secretion sample collection and/or analysis device configured to be coupled to an evacuation conduit.

10. The tracheal tube auxiliary system of claim 9, comprising an analysis system configured to receive the secretion sample collection and/or analysis device) perform an analysis, and output results of the analysis at a point-of-care.

11. The tracheal tube auxiliary system of claim 9, comprising a suction lumen configured to aspirate secretions from a respiratory airway of a patient.

12. The tracheal tube auxiliary system of claim 11, wherein the evacuation conduit is configured to be in fluid communication with the suction lumen.

13. The tracheal tube auxiliary system of claim 11, comprising a suction device configured to apply vacuum to the suction lumen at predetermined time intervals.

14. The tracheal tube auxiliary system of claim 11, comprising an analysis system configured to receive the secretion sample collection and/or analysis device, perform an analysis, and output results of the analysis in at a point-of-care.

15. The tracheal tube auxiliary system of claim 11, wherein the secretion sample collection and/or analysis device is a lab-on-a-chip.

16. A method of operation for a secretion sample collection and/or analysis device comprising:

placing the secretion sample collection and/or analysis device in a tracheal intubation system;

collecting secretion samples from an airway of a patient;

removing the secretion sample collection and/or analysis device from the tracheal intubation system; and

analyzing the secretion samples at the point-of-care.

17. The method of operation of claim 16, wherein collecting the secretion samples comprises aspirating a trachea of the patient.

18. The method of operation of claim 16, wherein analyzing the secretion samples comprises sequencing genetic information with probes specific to at least one pathogen characteristic to ventilator associated pneumonia.

19. The method of operation of claim 16, comprising placing the secretion sample collection and/or analysis device in an analysis system configured to analyze the contents of the secretion sample collection and/or analysis device.

20. The method of operation of claim 16, wherein placing the secretion sample collection and/or analysis device comprises placing the secretion sample collection and/or analysis device in a secretion reservoir.
