1. Illumination system (10), comprising:

  • four lamps (12A, 12B, 12C, 12D), each lamp (12A, 12B, 12C, 12D) generating light (16A, 16B, 16C, 16D) with a respective color point (C1, C2, C3, C4) having color coordinates ((x(1),y(1)), (x(2),y(2)), (x(3),y(3)), (x(4),y(4))) and having a nominal output intensity (L(1), L(2), L(3), L(4));

    four lamp drivers (13A, 13B, 13C, 13D) associated with the respective lamps, each lamp driver capable of driving its corresponding lamp with a dim factor (ξ

    1, ξ

    2, ξ

    3, ξ

    4);

    a common controller (15) for generating control signals for the lamp drivers (13A, 13B, 13C, 13D) such as to control the dim factors (ξ

    1, ξ

    2, ξ

    3, ξ

    4) of the respective lamps;

    wherein the controller (15) is responsive to an input signal indicating a target color point (T) having target chromaticity coordinates (xT,yT) by calculating target dim factors (ξ

    1T, ξ

    2T, ξ

    3T, ξ

    4T) and using these values for controlling the drivers;

    wherein the controller (15) is designed to select one of the lamps (12D) to be a basic lamp, to set the dim factor (ξ

    4) of this basic lamp to be equal to 1, to calculate an optimum solution for the other three dim factors (ξ

    1S, ξ

    2S, ξ

    3S) as a function of the target chromaticity coordinates (xT,yT), for the maximum allowed value of the luminance (YMAX) for which 0≦

    ξ

    1 applies for each of said dim factors (ξ

    1S, ξ

    2S, ξ

    3S).
