Abstract

A system for transferring data includes an analyte test instrument (ATI) adapted to store data, a wirelessly enabled data management device (DMD) for comprehensively analyzing data, and an adaptor removably connected to the ATI for transferring data stored on the ATI to the DMD. The adaptor includes a data communication device capable of removable connection with the ATI, a microprocessor electrically connected to the data communication device, a wireless controller electrically connected to the microprocessor and a wireless transceiver electrically connected to the wireless controller. In use, data transfer is executed between the ATI and the DMD by electrically and mechanically connecting the adaptor to the ATI. Data stored on the ATI is then automatically downloaded into adaptor memory. Upon completion of the download, the user activates an externally accessible input device on the adaptor which, in turn, wirelessly transmits data from the adaptor memory to the DMD.

19. A device for determining the concentration of an analyte in a sample, the device comprising:

a housing;

a test strip port disposed in the housing and sized to receive an analyte test strip;

a processor that determines an analyte concentration from a sample disposed on the analyte test strip when the analyte test strip is received in the test strip port; and

a communication unit removably connected to the housing and in communication with the processor, wherein the communication unit receives the determined analyte concentration from the processor and wirelessly transmits the determined analyte concentration to a remote data management device.

20. The device of claim 19, wherein the analyte is glucose.

21. The device of claim 19, wherein the device further comprises a display configured to provide a user of the device with information in a visual form.

22. The device of claim 21, wherein the information comprises analyte concentration data.

23. The device of claim 21, wherein the display is a liquid crystal display (LCD).

24. The device of claim 21, wherein the display comprises a numerical display.

25. The device of claim 21, wherein the display comprises a dot-matrix message line configured to provide information to the user.

26. The device of claim 21, wherein the display is configured to display a warning or prompting message to the user.

27. The device of claim 19, wherein the communication unit is configured to utilize infrared (IR) or radio frequency (RF) communication to wirelessly transmit the determined analyte concentration to the data management device.

28. The device of claim 27, wherein the communication unit is configured to utilize IR communication, and wherein the IR communication is infrared data (IrDA) communication.

29. The device of claim 27, wherein the communication unit is configured to utilize RF communication, and wherein the RF communication is selected from Bluetooth™

, 802.11 and ZigBee®

communication.

30. The device of claim 19, wherein the communication unit is configured to receive communications from the data management device.

31. The device of claim 19, wherein the device further comprises memory configured to store the determined analyte concentration.

32. The device of claim 31, wherein the memory is configured to store a plurality of determined analyte concentrations.

33. The device of claim 31, wherein the device further comprises a user input device.

34. The device of claim 33, wherein the user input device is configured to allow a user of the device to recall data stored in the memory.

35. The device of claim 25, wherein the device further comprises a user input device, and wherein the user input device is configured to allow a user of the device to respond to information displayed on the display.

36. The device of claim 21, wherein the display is configured to display one or more menus, the device comprises a user input device, and the user input device provides user-access to the one or more menus.

37. The device of claim 19, wherein the data management device is selected from a laptop computer, a desktop computer, and a personal digital assistant (PDA).

38. The device of claim 19, wherein the device comprises a power source.

39. The device of claim 38, wherein the power source comprises one or more replaceable batteries.

40. The device of claim 19, wherein the communication unit comprises a power source.

41. The device of claim 40, wherein the power source comprises one or more replaceable batteries.

42. The device of claim 19, wherein the communication unit is in wireless communication with the processor.

43. A device for determining the concentration of glucose in a sample, the device comprising:

a housing;

a test strip port disposed in the housing and configured to receive a glucose test strip;

a processor configured to determine the concentration of glucose in a sample disposed on the glucose test strip, thereby providing a determined glucose concentration; and

a communication unit removably connected to the housing and in communication with the processor, wherein the communication unit is configured to receive the determined glucose concentration from the processor and wirelessly transmit the determined glucose concentration to a data management device.

44. The device of claim 43, wherein the device further comprises a display configured to provide a user of the device with information in a visual form.

45. The device of claim 44, wherein the information comprises glucose concentration data.

46. The device of claim 44, wherein the display is a liquid crystal display (LCD).

47. The device of claim 44, wherein the display comprises a numerical display.

48. The device of claim 44, wherein the display comprises a dot-matrix message line configured to provide information to the user.

49. The device of claim 44, wherein the display is configured to display a warning or prompting message to the user.

50. The device of claim 43, wherein the communication unit is configured to utilize infrared (IR) or radio frequency (RF) communication to wirelessly transmit the determined glucose concentration to the data management device.

51. The device of claim 43, wherein the communication unit is configured to receive communications from the data management device.

52. The device of claim 43, wherein the device further comprises memory configured to store the determined glucose concentration.

53. The device of claim 52, wherein the memory is configured to store a plurality of determined glucose concentrations.

54. The device of claim 52, wherein the device further comprises a user input device.

55. The device of claim 54, wherein the user input device is configured to allow a user of the device to recall data stored in the memory.

56. The device of claim 48, wherein the device further comprises a user input device, and wherein the user input device is configured to allow a user of the device to respond to information displayed on the display.

57. The device of claim 44, wherein the display is configured to display one or more menus, the device comprises a user input device, and the user input device provides user-access to the one or more menus.

58. The device of claim 43, wherein the data management device is selected from a laptop computer, a desktop computer, and a personal digital assistant (PDA).
