Abstract

A surgical or laparoscopic method of treating obesity of a patient using a device adapted to stretch a portion of the stomach wall of said patient. The method comprising the steps of: cutting a hole in the abdominal wall of said patient, dissecting an area around the stomach, placing said device in contact with the stomach, and fixating, direct or indirect, through invagination of the stomach wall, said device to the stomach wall such that said device can stretch a portion of said stomach wall.

Claims

1. A surgical or laparoscopic method of treating obesity of a patient using a device adapted to stretch a portion of the stomach wall of said patient, the method comprising the steps of:

a. cutting a hole in the abdominal wall of said patient,

b. dissecting an area around the stomach,

c. placing said device in contact with the stomach, and

d. fixating, direct or indirect, through invagination of the stomach wall, said device to the stomach wall such that said device can stretch a portion of said stomach wall.

2. The method according to claim 1, wherein the step of fixating said device comprises the steps of:

a. fixating a first portion of said device to a first part of said stomach wall, and

b. fixating a second portion of said device to a second part of said stomach wall, wherein said first and second portion of said device is fixated, such that said device is adapted to stretch a portion of said stomach wall between said first and second part of said stomach wall.

3. The method according to claim 1, wherein said device is a first device, said method comprising the additional steps of:

a. fixating direct or indirect through invagination of the stomach wall a second device adapted to stretch a part of the stomach wall in contact with the stomach,

b. fixating said second device to the stomach wall,

c. stretching a first portion of the stomach wall using said first device, and

d. stretching a second portion of the stomach wall using said second device.

4. The method according to claim 2, comprising the additional step of postoperatively and non-invasively regulating said device to stretch a portion of said stomach wall to affect the appetite of the patient.

5. The method according to claim 1, comprising the additional step of postoperatively and non-invasively regulating said device to stretch a part of said stomach wall to affect the appetite of the patient.

7. The method according to claim 4, wherein the step of postoperatively and non-invasively regulating said device to stretch a part of said stomach wall comprises the step of increasing the distance between said first part of said stomach wall and said second part of said stomach wall.

8. The method according to claim 4, wherein the step of regulating said device is performed from outside the patient'"'"'s body.

9. The method according to claim 3, wherein the step of regulating said device comprises from time to time regulate different device to at a first time stretch a first portion of the stomach wall and at a second time stretch a second portion of the stomach wall.

10. The method according to claim 3, wherein said method comprises placing two or more device in contact with the stomach and from time to time regulate different device to stretch a portion of the stomach wall.

11. The method according to claim 2, wherein the step of fixating said first and second portion of said device comprises the steps of invaginating said first and second portion with stomach to stomach sutures or staplers.

12. The method according to claim 4, further comprising an implantable control unit, wherein the method step of regulating said device comprises regulating said device by said implantable control unit from inside said body.

13. The method according to claim 1, wherein stretching the second portion comprises the step of:

time delaying stretching the second part, with a predetermined time delay.

14. The method according claim 4, wherein the step of placing an device in contact with the stomach comprises placing an device adapted to have a variable volume in contact with the stomach.

15. The method according to claim 14, wherein said device adapted to have a variable volume comprises at least one moveable wall portion.

16. The method according to claim 14, wherein said device adapted to have a variable volume comprises at least one elastic wall portion.

17. The method according to claim 14, wherein said device has an essentially round shape.

18. The method according to claim 14, wherein said device is essentially egg shaped.

19. The method according to claim 14, wherein said device comprises a subcutaneous switch, and wherein said method further comprises pressing said switch for manually and non-invasively regulating said device.

20. The method according to claim 14, wherein the step of regulating said device comprises the step of moving a fluid from a reservoir to said device.

6. A surgical or laparoscopic method of treating obesity of a patient using an device adapted to stretch a portion of the stomach wall of said patient, the method comprising the steps of:

a. inserting a needle or tube like instrument into the abdomen of the patients body,

b. using the needle or tube like instrument to fill the patient'"'"'s body with gas,

c. placing at least two laparoscopic trocars in the patient'"'"'s body,

d. inserting a camera through one of the laparoscopic trocars in the patient'"'"'s body,

e. inserting at least one dissecting tool through one of said at least two laparoscopic trocars,

f. dissecting an area of the stomach,

g. introducing an device into the abdominal cavity,

h. placing the device on the outside of the stomach wall, engaging the stomach wall.
