1. A drug delivery system for delivering medicine comprising, in combination:

  • a pump mechanism having a control system for controlling the pumping rate of the pump mechanism, the control system programmed to have a plurality of fixed pumping rates including a reference fixed pumping rate and to allow a patient to select a first fixed pumping rate from the plurality of fixed pumping rates, the control system programmed to prevent the patient from deviating from the reference fixed pumping rate by a prescribed amount within a prescribed period of time;

    an external programming device configured to program the control system;

    an external patient control device configured to send patient commands to the control system and configured to receive a response from the control system, the external patient control device including a display console for communicating the response from the control system to the patient, the response indicating a reaction of the control system to the patient command; and

    a patient activity counter mechanism configured to count the number of patient requests sent to the control system and the number of responses sent from the control system.
