Abstract

The present disclosure relates to nutritional compositions comprising a prebiotic component for inhibiting adherence of pathogens in the gastrointestinal tract of a subject and to the prebiotic component, which comprises galactooligosaccharide, polydextrose or any mixture thereof. The nutritional compositions of the present disclosure comprise a fat or lipid source, a protein source, and a carbohydrate source comprising an effective amount of the prebiotic component.

Claims

1. A nutritional composition, wherein the nutritional composition is effective at inhibiting the adhesion of pathogens in the gastrointestinal tract when fed to an infant or child, comprising:

a fat or lipid source;

a protein source; and

a carbohydrate source comprising a prebiotic component comprising galactooligosaccharide.

2. The nutritional composition according to claim 1, wherein the nutritional composition is an infant formula.

3. The nutritional composition according to claim 1, wherein the nutritional composition is nutritionally complete.

4. The nutritional composition according to claim 1, wherein the nutritional composition is in a powdered form.

5. The nutritional composition according to claim 1, further comprising at least one probiotic.

6. The nutritional composition according to claim 5, wherein the probiotic is selected from the group consisting of Bifidobacteria spp., Lactobacillus spp. and combinations thereof.

7. The nutritional composition according to claim 1, further comprising the administration of at least one long chain polyunsaturated fatty acid.

8. The nutritional composition according to claim 7, wherein the long chain polyunsaturated fatty acid is selected from the group consisting of docosahexaenoic acid, arachidonic acid, or combinations thereof.

9. The nutritional composition according to claim 1, wherein the fat source is present at a level of about 3 to about 7 g/100 kcal.

10. The nutritional composition according to claim 1, wherein the protein source is present at a level of about 1 to about 5 g/100 kcal.

11. The nutritional composition according to claim 1, wherein the prebiotic component further comprises polydextrose.

12. The nutritional composition according to claim 11, wherein the ratio of polydextrose to galactooligosaccharide is between about 9:

13. The nutritional composition according to claim 1, wherein the protein source is selected from the group consisting of whey protein, casein, casein protein, nonfat milk, hydrolyzed protein and combinations thereof.

14. A method for inhibiting adhesion of pathogens in the gastrointestinal tract of a human subject, comprising administering a prebiotic component comprising galactooligosaccharide and polydextrose.

15. The method according to claim 14;

wherein the ratio of polydextrose to galactooligosaccharide is between about 9;

16. The method according to claim 14, further comprising the step of administering at least one probiotic.

17. The method according to claim 16, wherein the probiotic is selected from the group consisting of Bifidobacteria spp., Lactobacillus spp. and combinations thereof.

18. The method according to claim 14, further comprising the step of administering at least one long chain polyunsaturated fatty acid.

19. The method according to claim 18, wherein the long chain polyunsaturated fatty acid is selected from the group consisting of docosahexaenoic acid, arachidonic acid, or combinations thereof.

20. A prebiotic component for inhibiting the adhesion of pathogens in the gastrointestinal tract of a subject, comprising galactooligosaccharide and polydextrose.
