Abstract

A lithium-ion battery includes a positive electrode having a first active material and a second active material and a negative electrode including a third active material. The second active material includes a lithiated form of a material that does not include electrochemically cyclable lithium in the as-provided state.

Claims

1. A lithium-ion battery comprising:

a positive electrode comprising a first active material and a second active material; and

a negative electrode comprising a third active material;

wherein the second active material comprises a lithiated form of a material that does not include electrochemically cyclable lithium in the as-provided state.

2. The lithium-ion battery of claim 1, wherein the negative electrode further comprises a current collector and wherein the second active material exhibits charging and discharging capacity below a corrosion potential of the current collector.

3. The lithium-ion battery of claim 1, wherein the second active material comprises powdered lithium as source of electrochemically cyclable lithium.

4. The lithium-ion battery of claim 1, wherein the second active material comprises a lithium intermetallic compound as source of electrochemically cyclable lithium.

5. The lithium-ion battery of claim 1, wherein the material that does not include electrochemically cyclable lithium in the as-provided state comprises an oxide of vanadium.

6. The lithium-ion battery of claim 1, wherein the material that does not include electrochemically cyclable lithium in the as-provided state comprises a material selected from the group consisting of MoO₃, TiS₂, WO₂, MoO₂, and RuO₂.

7. The lithium-ion battery of claim 1, wherein the third active material comprises a lithium titanate material.

8. The lithium-ion battery of claim 1, wherein the first active material and the second active material are provided as separate layers.

9. The lithium-ion battery of claim 1, wherein the first active material includes lithium in the as-provided state.

10. The lithium-ion battery of claim 9, wherein the first active material comprises LiCoO₂.

11. The lithium-ion battery of claim 1, further comprising a liquid electrolyte.

12. The lithium-ion battery of claim 1, further comprising a porous polymeric separator.

13. The lithium-ion battery of claim 1, wherein the positive electrode and the negative electrode are provided as wound electrodes.

14. A lithium-ion battery comprising:

a positive electrode comprising a first active material and a second active material, wherein the first active material comprises lithium in the as-provided state and the second active material comprises a material that does not include electrochemically cyclable lithium in the as-provided state that is lithiated to provide electrochemically cyclable lithium for the second active material; and

a negative electrode comprising a third active material.

15. The lithium-ion battery of claim 14, wherein the second active material exhibits charging and discharging capacity below a corrosion potential of a current collector of the negative electrode.

16. The lithium-ion battery of claim 14, wherein the second active material comprises electrochemically cyclable powdered lithium.

17. The lithium-ion battery of claim 14, wherein the second active material comprises a lithium intermetallic compound as a source of electrochemically cyclable lithium.

18. The lithium-ion battery of claim 14, wherein the material that does not include electrochemically cyclable lithium in the as-provided state comprises an oxide of vanadium.

19. The lithium-ion battery of claim 14, wherein the material that does not include electrochemically cyclable lithium in the as-provided state comprises a material selected from the group consisting of MoO₃, TiS₂, WO₂, MoO₂, and RuO₂.

20. The lithium-ion battery of claim 14, wherein the third active material comprises a lithium titanate material.

21. The lithium-ion battery of claim 14, wherein the first active material and the second active material are provided as separate layers.

22. The lithium-ion battery of claim 14, wherein the first active material comprises LiCoO₂.

23. The lithium-ion battery of claim 14, further comprising a porous polymeric separator and a liquid electrolyte that includes a lithium salt dissolved in at least one non-aqueous solvent.

24. The lithium-ion battery of claim 14, wherein the positive and negative electrodes are wound electrodes.

25. A lithium-ion battery comprising:

a positive electrode comprising a current collector and two active materials, wherein a first of the two active materials is LiCoO₂ and a second of the two active materials comprises a lithiated form of a material that does not include electrochemically-cyclable lithium in the as-provided state;

a liquid electrolyte comprising a lithium salt dissolved in at least one nonaqueous solvent; and

a negative electrode comprising a current collector and a lithium titanate active material;

wherein the second active material exhibits charging and discharging capacity below a corrosion potential of the current collector.

26. The lithium-ion battery of claim 25, wherein the second active material comprises electrochemically cyclable powdered lithium.

27. The lithium-ion battery of claim 25, wherein the second active material comprises a lithium intermetallic compound as a source of electrochemically cyclable lithium.

28. The lithium-ion battery of claim 25, wherein the material that does not include electrochemically cyclable lithium in the as-provided state comprises an oxide of vanadium.

29. The lithium-ion battery of claim 25, wherein the material that does not include electrochemically cyclable lithium in the as-provided state comprises a material selected from the group consisting of MoO₃, TiS₂, WO₂, MoO₂, and RuO₂.

30. The lithium-ion battery of claim 25, wherein the first active material and the second active material are provided as separate layers.
