Abstract

This invention generally relates to devices and methods for repairing an aperture in biological tissue. In certain embodiments the invention provides as system for closing an aperture in a biological tissue including a handle, an elongate shaft connected to the handle, a deployment scaffold connected to the shaft, in which the scaffold is configured to releasably retain a surgical implant, and at least one adhesive dispensing system.

Claims

1. A system for closing an aperture in a biological tissue, the system comprising:

a handle;

an elongate shaft connected to the handle;

a deployment scaffold connected to the shaft, wherein the scaffold is configured to releasably retain a surgical implant; and

at least one adhesive dispensing system.

2. The system according to claim 1, wherein the dispensing system comprises:

at least one reservoir for holding adhesive;

a tube connected to each reservoir; and

a nozzle connected to each tube.

3. The system according to claim 2, wherein the reservoir is removable from the dispensing system.

4. The system according to claim 2, wherein the reservoir comprises a breakable membrane.

5. The system according to claim 2, wherein the nozzles are integrated with the deployment scaffold and the nozzles are configured to dispense adhesive from beneath the implant, the adhesive passing through the implant to an upper surface of the implant.

6. The system according to claim 2, wherein the nozzles are integrated with the deployment scaffold and the nozzles are configured to penetrate the implant and dispense adhesive to an upper surface of the implant.

7. The system according to claim 2, wherein the tubes or the nozzles releasably retain the implant.

8. The system according to claim 2, wherein each reservoir holds a different type of adhesive.

9. The system according to claim 2, wherein each reservoir holds a different component of a multi-component adhesive.

10. The system according to claim 1, wherein the system is configured such that the dispensing system dispenses adhesive onto the implant prior to the implant being attached to the tissue.

11. The system according to claim 1, wherein the system is configured such that the dispensing system dispenses adhesive onto the biological tissue prior to the implant being attached to the tissue.

12. The system according to claim 1, wherein the system further comprises a biocompatible adhesive held within the adhesive dispensing system.

13. The system according to claim 12, wherein the adhesive is glue.

14. The system according to claim 13, wherein the glue is fibrin sealant or cyanoacrylate.

15. The system according to claim 1, wherein the scaffold comprises:

a plurality of arms that are configured to move from a retained position to a plurality of deployed positions, wherein the arms hold the implant.

16. The system according to claim 1, wherein the scaffold comprises:

a frame;

a plurality of deployment arms hingedly connected to the frame, wherein the frame is configured to move from a retained position to at least one deployed position;

wherein the scaffold holds the implant.

17. The system according to claim 1, wherein the deployment scaffold is configured to allow for deployment of the implant and retraction of the implant while the implant is within a patient'"'"'s body.

18. The system according to claim 1, wherein the deployment scaffold is configured to allow for a plurality of deployment positions.

19. The system according to claim 1, wherein the deployment scaffold comprises an articulating member that allows for adjustment of the position and the orientation of the surgical implant relative to the aperture in the tissue.

20. The system according to claim 1, further comprising the surgical implant.

21. The system according to claim 20, wherein the surgical implant is a patch.

22. The system according to claim 21, wherein the patch is porous.

23. The system according to claim 21, wherein the patch is non-porous.

24. The system according to claim 21, wherein the patch is comprised of surgical mesh.

25. The system according to claim 1, wherein the aperture in the biological tissue is an aperture in an abdominal wall.

26. The system according to claim 1, wherein the elongate shaft is flexible.

27. The system according to claim 1, wherein the elongate shaft is rigid.

28. A method for closing an aperture in a biological tissue, the method comprising;

inserting an instrument into a surgical site of a patient, wherein the instrument comprises a handle, an elongate shaft connected to the handle, and a deployment scaffold connected to the shaft;

deploying a surgical implant from the deployment scaffold;

dispensing a biocompatible adhesive onto either the implant or the biological tissue surrounding the aperture;

contacting the implant to the biological tissue surrounding the aperture, thereby covering the aperture in the tissue; and

disconnecting the implant from the instrument.

29. The method according to claim 28, wherein the adhesive is dispensed onto the implant.

30. The method according to claim 28, wherein the adhesive is dispensed homogenously around margins of the implant.

31. The method according to claim 28, wherein the adhesive is a glue.

32. The method according to claim 31, wherein the glue is fibrin sealant or cyanoacrylate.

33. The method according to claim 28, wherein prior to the dispensing step, the method further comprises adjusting the position and the orientation of the implant relative to the aperture in the tissue.

34. The method according to claim 28, wherein the aperture in the biological tissue is an aperture in an abdominal wall.

35. The method according to claim 28, wherein deploying is accomplished in a controlled and continuous manner.

36. The method according to claim 28, wherein prior to the dispensing step, the method further comprises:

assessing the deployment of the implant relative to the aperture in the tissue;

retracting the implant; and

re-deploying the implant.
