Abstract

The presently claimed technology relates generally to audio-based, location-related methods. One claim recites a method in which a microphone in a user'"'"'s portable device captures ambient sound, and corresponding data is then processed to determine location information about the user'"'"'s location. Action is then taken involving the determined location information. By such arrangement, location information is determined by reference to ambient sound captured by a user-carried portable device. A great number of other features and arrangements are also detailed.

Claims

1. A method comprising:

with a microphone in a user'"'"'s portable device, converting ambient sound into electrical signals;

converting the electrical signals into data;

processing said data to determine location information about the user'"'"'s location; and

taking an action involving said determined location information;

wherein location information is determined by reference to ambient sound captured by a user-carried portable device.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein said processing also includes decoding a Digital Object Identifier song ID from a digital watermark signal conveyed by said data, said decoding including cyclically applying plural different decoding techniques until one that produces valid data, by reference to a checksum, is produced, the method further including delivering a file corresponding to said Digital Object Identifier song ID, together with an indication of said determined location information, to a destination specified by a user.

3. A method comprising:

with a microphone in a portable device, converting ambient sound into electrical signals;

converting the electrical signals into data;

processing said data to determine information about the device'"'"'s location; and

presenting information to a user in accordance with said determined information.

4. The method of claim 3 wherein said presenting information occurs remotely from said portable device.

5. A method comprising:

determining information about a user'"'"'s location, by reference to ambient sound captured by a user'"'"'s portable device;

at a computer device remote from the user'"'"'s portable device, receiving data including the determined information, and also including information identifying the user; and

taking an action based on said received data.

6. The method of claim 5 that includes:

determining user location information by reference to said ambient sound;

wherein the received data includes said determined user location information.

7. The method of claim 5 that includes, by reference to captured ambient sound emitted by a public address system, determining said information about the user'"'"'s location.

8. The method of claim 5 that includes, by reference to captured subliminal ambient sound, determining said information about the user'"'"'s location.

9. The method of claim 5 that includes, by reference to a pseudo-random signal in the captured ambient sound, determining said information about the user'"'"'s location.

10. The method of claim 5 that includes decoding a digital watermark signal in the captured ambient sound.

11. The method of claim 5 that includes decoding a digital watermark signal in the captured ambient sound, using a processor in the portable device configured to perform such act.

12. A method comprising:

with a microphone in a portable device, converting ambient sound into electrical signals;

converting the electrical signals into data;

processing said data to produce user context data; and

transmitting information, including said context data, from the portable device to a remote computer, so the remote computer can act thereon.

13. The method of claim 12 in which the processing comprises decoding digital watermark information from the ambient sound.

14. The method of claim 12 which further includes the remote computer acting on the transmitted information.

15. A location-based method comprising:

generating data indicative of a location of a portable device; and

providing information indicating the location of the portable device to a user remote from said portable device;

wherein said generating comprises processing sound data captured by said portable device.
