Abstract

The present invention is directed towards systems and methods for monitoring services in a multi-core system. The systems and methods distribute the monitors for a service and the ownership of a service across the cores of the multi-core device. The greater resources of the multi-core device process the workload of the monitors for the services and the workload for monitoring the states of the services more efficiently than a single packet engine on a core.

Claims

1. A method of distributing monitoring of one or more services across a plurality of cores managing the one or more services in a multi-core system, the method comprising:

a) establishing a configuration for monitors in a multi-core system having a plurality of cores, the configuration identifying a plurality of monitors to monitor one or more services managed by a plurality of packet processing engines operating on each of the plurality of cores;

b) identifying, by each of the plurality of packet processing engines, from the configuration a monitor name and service name for each monitor of the plurality of monitors;

c) computing, by each of the plurality of packet processing engines, for each monitor of the plurality of monitors a value based on a function of the monitor name and the service name; and

d) determining, by each of the plurality of packet processing engines, a packet processing engine from the plurality of packet processing engines to establish the monitor for the service based on the value corresponding to an identifier of the packet processing engine.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein step (a) further comprises establishing the configuration of a plurality of monitors for a service, at least two of the plurality of monitors having a different assigned weight.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein step (b) further comprises storing, by each of the plurality of packet processing engines, the monitor name and the service name for each monitor to a storage location of a corresponding core of the plurality of cores.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein step (c) further comprises computing the value based on the function of the monitor name and the service name and a number of the plurality of packet processing engines.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein step (c) further comprises computing the value as a function of a sum of ASCII values of the monitor name and ASCII values of the service name, the sum being divided by a number of the plurality of packet processing engines.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein step (d) further comprises the value being equal to the identifier of the packet processing engine.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein step (d) further comprises storing, by each of the plurality of packet processing engines, information about the monitor in a probing schedule of each of the plurality of packet processing engines responsive to the determination.

8. The method of claim 1, further comprising monitoring, by a first monitor on a first packet processing engine, a service based on the determination and monitoring, by a second monitor on a second packet processing engine, the server based on the determination.

9. The method of claim 1, further comprising monitoring, by a monitor of a packet processing engine, a service and communicating a state of the service to a consolidator on a designated master core upon a change in the state of the service.

The method of claim 9, further comprising computing by the consolidator the state of the service from monitoring information received from the plurality of monitors operating on the plurality of packet processing engines and communicating the state of the service to the plurality of packet processing engines.

19. The system of claim 1, wherein a monitor of a packet processing engine monitors a service and communicates a state of the service to a consolidator on a designated master core upon a change in the state of the service.

The system of claim 19, further comprising a consolidator that computes the state of the service from monitoring information received from the plurality of monitors operating on the plurality of packet processing engines and communicates the state of the service to the plurality of packet processing engines.

11. A multi-core system that distributes monitoring of one or more services across a plurality of cores managing the one or more services, the system comprising:

a plurality of cores, each of the cores operating a packet processing engine, wherein the plurality of cores establishes a configuration identifying a plurality of monitors to monitor one or more services managed by a plurality of packet processing engines operating on each of the plurality of cores; and

each of the plurality of packet processing engines identifies from the configuration a monitor name and service name for each monitor of the plurality of monitors;

computes for each monitor of the plurality of monitors a value based on a function of the monitor name and the service name; and

determines a packet processing engine from the plurality of packet processing engines to establish the monitor for the service based on the value corresponding to an identifier of the packet processing engine.

12. The system of claim 11, wherein the system establishes the configuration of a plurality of monitors for a service, at least two of the plurality of monitors having a different assigned weight.

13. The system of claim 11, wherein each of the plurality of packet processing engines stores the monitor name and the service name for each monitor to a storage location of a corresponding core of the plurality of cores.

14. The system of claim 11, wherein each of the plurality of packet processing engines computes the value based on the function of the monitor name and the service name and a number of the plurality of packet processing engines.

15. The system of claim 11, wherein each of the plurality of packet processing engines computes the value as a function of a sum of ASCII values of the monitor name and ASCII values of the service name, the sum being divided by a number of the plurality of packet processing engines.

16. The system of claim 11, wherein the value is equal to the identifier of the packet processing engine.

17. The system of claim 11, wherein each of the plurality of packet processing engines stores information about the monitor in a probing schedule of each of the plurality of packet processing engines responsive to the determination.

18. The system of claim 11, wherein a first monitor on a first packet processing engine monitors a service based on the determination and a second monitor on a second packet processing engine monitors the server based on the determination.
