Abstract

A polymeric material may be prepared by reacting a composition that includes polyol, polyisocyanate, and polyorganosiloxane having functional groups capable of reacting with the polyisocyanate, wherein the polymeric material has a surface which includes raised microdomains.

Claims

1. A cross-linked polymeric material prepared by reacting a composition comprising:

polyol;

polyisocyanate; and

polyorganosiloxane having functional groups capable of reacting with the polyisocyanate;

wherein the polymeric material has a surface which includes raised microdomains.

2. The polymeric material of claim 1 wherein the microdomains do not appreciably change when exposed to water for more than 14 days.

3. The polymeric material of claim 1 wherein the polyorganosiloxane comprises hydroxy functional polyorganosiloxane.

4. The polymeric material of claim 3 wherein the hydroxy functional polyorganosiloxane has an average hydroxyl equivalent weight of about 200 to 800.

5. The polymeric material of claim 1 wherein the polyol comprises polyol having at least three hydroxy groups.

6. The polymeric material of claim 1 wherein the polyol comprises polycaprolactone polyol.

7. The polymeric material of claim 1 wherein the polyisocyanate comprises polyisocyanate having at least three isocyanate groups.

8. The polymeric material of claim 1 wherein the microdomains have an average diameter of about 0.1 micron to 5 microns.

9. The polymeric material of claim 1 wherein the microdomains have an average height of about 0.01 microns to 0.2 microns.

10. The polymeric material of claim 1 wherein the microdomains have an average spacing of about 0.5 microns to 10 microns.

11. The polymeric material of claim 1 wherein the polyorganosiloxane comprises amino functional polyorganosiloxane.

12. The polymeric material of claim 1 wherein the composition further comprises a solvent component, which includes alkyl acetate, alkyl propionate, alkyl alkoxyacetate, akoxypropionate, alkoxyalkyl acetate, alkoxyalkyl propionate, toluene, xylene, dialkyl ketone or a mixture thereof.

13. The polymeric material of claim 1 wherein the surface has a microdomain density of about 0.1 to 1.5 microdomains/micron².

27. A substrate comprising a surface coated with the polymeric material of claim 1.

14. A polymeric material prepared by reacting a composition comprising:

polycaprolactone polyol;

polyisocyanate; and

polyorganosiloxane having functional groups capable of reacting with the polyisocyanate;

wherein the polycaprolactone polyol includes polyol having at least three hydroxy groups and the polyisocyanate includes isocyanate having at least three isocyanate groups.

15. The polymeric material of claim 14 comprising about 10 wt % to 40 wt % polycaprolactone polyol.

16. The polymeric material of claim 14 comprising about 30 wt % to 85 wt % of polyisocyanate.

17. The polymeric material of claim 14 wherein the polyisocyanate has an average isocyanate equivalent weight of about 150 to 600.

18. The polymeric material of claim 14 comprising:

about 20 to 30 wt % polycaprolactone polyol which includes polyol having at least three hydroxy groups;

about 50 to 75 wt % polyisocyanate, which includes isocyanate having at least three isocyanate groups; and

about 3 to 13 wt % hydroxy functional polydimethylsiloxane.

19. The polymeric material of claim 14 wherein the polycaprolactone polyol comprises polycaprolactone triol having an average hydroxyl equivalent weight of about 150 to 200;

the polyisocyanate comprises isophorone diisocyanate based polyisocyanate having an average isocyanate equivalent weight of about 250 to 450; and

the hydroxy functional polydimethylsiloxane comprises α

,ω

-bis(3-(2′

-hydroxyethoxy)propyl)-polydimethylsiloxane having an average hydroxyl equivalent weight of about 350 to 700.

20. The polymeric material of claim 14, wherein the composition comprises on a solids basis:

about 10 to 40 wt % of the polycaprolactone polyol;

about 30 to 85 wt % of the polyisocyanate; and

about 2 to 14 wt % of the polyorganosiloxane.

21. A cross linked polymeric material prepared by reacting precursors comprising:

polyol;

polyisocyanate; and

no more than about 14 wt % polyhydroxy functional polyorganosiloxane, based on the total solids content of the polymeric material;

22. A cross linked polymeric material prepared by reacting a composition comprising:

polyol;

polyisocyanate;

polyorganosiloxane having functional groups capable of reacting with the polyisocyanate; and

wherein the polymeric material includes surface microdomains which are more hydrophobic than a surrounding matrix.

23. The polymeric material of claim 22 wherein the microdomains have a hydrophobicity which does not appreciably change when exposed to water for 14 days.

24. The polymeric material of claim 22 wherein the microdomains have a morphology which does not appreciably change when exposed to water for 14 days.

25. A coating composition comprising:

no more than about 14 wt %, based on the total solids in the coating composition after the coating composition has cured, of a hydroxy functional polyorganosiloxane;

polycaprolactone polyol;

polyisocyanate; and

a solvent component.

26. The coating composition of claim 25 further comprising a pot life extender.

28. A method of preparing a coated substrate comprising:

adding isocyanate reaction catalyst to a composition comprising polyol, polyisocyanate, and polyorganosiloxane having functional groups capable of reacting with the polyisocyanate to form a coating composition; and

applying the coating composition to a substrate surface;

wherein the coating composition cures to form a polymeric coating on the substrate surface having raised microdomains.

29. The coating composition of claim 28 wherein the coating composition includes a solvent component having a formation vapor pressure no more than about 12 mm of Hg.

30. The coating composition of claim 28 wherein the solvent component has a solubility parameter between about 8 (cal/cm³)^0.5 and 8.7 (cal/cm³)^0.5.
