Abstract

A method and system are provided for delivering digital content. A first catalogued list of content is delivered from a user operated device to a media storage device, and attributes of the first catalogued list are determined. A second catalogued list of content is delivered from a content provider to the media storage device. The first catalogued list is modified based upon the second catalogued list and the attributes, and the modified first catalogued list is delivered to the user operated device. Content from the modified first catalogued list is delivered to the user operated device for storage and subsequent playback.

Claims

1. A method for updating a list of content stored on a user-operated device, the method comprising:

performing the following in a server in communication with at least one content provider and a user-operated device, wherein the user-operated device stores a list of content available for download from the at least one content provider;

storing, in the server, a list of content available for download from the at least one content provider, wherein the list of content stored on the user-operated device is out-of-date with respect to the list of content stored in the server; and

sending an update file to update the list of content stored on the user-operated device, wherein the update file is based on information indicating when the list of content stored on the user-operated device was last updated.

2. The method of claim 1 further comprising authenticating a user of the user-operated device prior to sending the update file to the user-operated device.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein the sending of the update file is performed by streaming the update file to the user-operated device.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein sending of the update file is performed by downloading the update file to the user-operated device.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein the user-operated device comprises a wireless portable device.

6. The method of claim 1 further comprising determining that the list of content on the user-operated device needs to be completely replaced, and wherein the update file comprises a list of content to replace the list of content stored on the user-operated device.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein a selection from the list of content stored in the user-operated device can be made without the user-operated device being connected to the at least one content provider.

8. The method of claim 1, wherein the information indicating when the list of content stored on the user-operated device was last updated comprises a version number.

9. The method of claim 1, wherein the information indicating when the list of content stored on the user-operated device was last updated comprises a last update time.

10. The method of claim 1, wherein the update file comprises changes needed to update the list of content stored on the user-operated device.

11. The method of claim 1, wherein the update file comprises a list of content to replace the list of content stored on the user-operated device.

12. The method of claim 1, wherein the update file further comprises information specifying how at least a portion of new data in the update file is to be displayed on the user-operated device.

13. A server comprising:

an interface operative to communicate with at least one content provider and a user-operated device, wherein the user-operated device stores a list of content available for download from the at least one content provider;

a memory storing a list of content available for download from the at least one content provider, wherein the list of content stored on the user-operated device is out-of-date with respect to the list of content stored in the server; and

a processor operative to send an update file to update the list of content stored on the user-operated device, wherein the update file is based on information indicating when the list of content stored on the user-operated device was last updated.

14. The server of claim 13, wherein the processor is further operative to authenticate a user of the user-operated device prior to sending the update file to the user-operated device.

15. The server of claim 13, wherein the sending of the update file is performed by streaming the update file to the user-operated device.

16. The server of claim 13, wherein the sending of the update file is performed by downloading the update file to the user-operated device.

17. The server of claim 13, wherein the user-operated device comprises a wireless portable device.

18. The server of claim 13, wherein a selection from the list of content stored in the user-operated device can be made without the user-operated device being connected to the at least one content provider.

19. The server of claim 13, wherein the information indicating when the list of content stored on the user-operated device was last updated comprises a version number.

20. The server of claim 13, wherein the information indicating when the list of content stored on the user-operated device was last updated comprises a last update time.

21. The server of claim 13, wherein the update file comprises changes needed to update the list of content stored on the user-operated device.

22. The server of claim 13, wherein the update file comprises a list of content to replace the list of content stored on the user-operated device.

23. The server of claim 13, wherein the processor is further operative to determine that the list of content on the user-operated device needs to be completely replaced, and wherein the update file comprises a list of content to replace the list of content stored on the user-operated device

24. The server of claim 13, wherein the update file further comprises information specifying how at least a portion of new data in the update file is to be displayed on the user-operated device.

25. A user-operated device comprising:

an interface operative to communicate with a server that is in communication with at least one content provider, wherein the server stores a list of content available for download from the at least one content provider;

a memory storing a list of content available for download from the at least one content provider, wherein the list of content stored in the memory of the user-operated device is out-of-date with respect to the list of content stored in the server; and

a processor operative to;

receive an update file from the server, wherein the update file is based on information indicating when the list of content stored on the user-operated device was last updated; and

update the list of content stored in the memory of the user-operated device based on the update file received from the server.

26. The user-operated device of claim 25, wherein the update file is streamed to the user-operated device.

27. The user-operated device of claim 25, wherein the update file is downloaded to the user-operated device.

28. The user-operated device of claim 25, wherein the user-operated device comprises a wireless portable device.

29. The user-operated device of claim 25, wherein the processor is further operative to make a selection from the list of content without the user-operated device being connected to the at least one content provider.

30. The user-operated device of claim 25, wherein the information indicating when the list of content stored on the user-operated device was last updated comprises a version number.

31. The user-operated device of claim 25, wherein the information indicating when the list of content stored on the user-operated device was last updated comprises a last update time.

32. The user-operated device of claim 25, wherein the update file comprises changes needed to update the list of content stored on the user-operated device.

33. The user-operated device of claim 25, wherein the update file comprises a list of content to replace the list of content stored on the user-operated device.

34. The user-operated device of claim 25, wherein the update file further comprises information specifying how at least a portion of new data in the update file is to be displayed on the user-operated device.
