Abstract

An approach is provided for determining an optimal keep-alive time period. A request is received from one of a plurality of user equipments for a keep-alive timer value. A specific network information related to a network serving the one user equipment is determined. A keep-alive timer value is determined based on the network information and advantageously using statistical analysis.

Claims

1. A method comprising:

receiving a request from one of a plurality of user equipments for a keep-alive timer value;

determining a specific network information related to a network serving the one user equipment; and

determining the keep-alive timer value based on the network information.

2. A method of claim 1, further comprising:

receiving probe values from the plurality of user equipments, wherein the probe values comprise successful probe values and unsuccessful probe values.

3. A method of claim 2, wherein the determination is based on a statistical analysis of the probe values.

4. A method of claim 1, wherein each of the plurality of user equipments are served by a same communication network.

5. A method of claim 1, wherein the network information comprises global packet radio service gateway support node information.

6. A method of claim 5, wherein the global packet radio service gateway support node information is an access point name.

7. A method of claim 1, wherein the network information comprises a mobile country code, a mobile network code, a source internet protocol address, or a combination thereof.

8. An apparatus comprising:

at least one processor; and

at least one memory including computer program code,

the at least one memory and the computer program code configured to, with the at least one processor, cause the apparatus to perform at least the following,

receive a request from one of a plurality of user equipments for a keep-alive timer value,

determine a specific network information related to a network serving the one user equipment; and

determine the keep-alive timer value based on the network information.

9. An apparatus of claim 8, wherein the apparatus is further caused to:

receive probe values from the plurality of user equipments, wherein the probe values comprise successful probe values and unsuccessful probe values.

10. An apparatus of claim 9, wherein the determination is based on a statistical analysis of the probe values.

11. An apparatus of claim 8, wherein each of the plurality of user equipments are served by a same communication network.

12. An apparatus of claim 8, wherein the network information comprises global packet radio service gateway support node information.

13. An apparatus of claim 12, wherein the global packet radio service gateway support node information is an access point name.

14. An apparatus of claim 8, wherein the network information comprises a mobile country code, a mobile network code, a source internet protocol address, or a combination thereof.

15. A computer-readable storage medium carrying one or more sequences of one or more instructions which, when executed by one or more processors, cause an apparatus to perform at least the following:

receive a request from one of a plurality of user equipments for a keep-alive timer value,

determine a specific network information related to a communication network serving the one user equipment; and

determine the keep-alive timer value based on the network information.

16. A computer-readable storage medium claim 15, wherein the apparatus is further caused to:

receive probe values from the plurality of user equipments, wherein the probe values comprise successful probe values and unsuccessful probe values.

17. A computer-readable storage medium of claim 16, wherein the determination is based on a statistical analysis of the probe values.

18. A computer-readable storage medium of claim 15, wherein the network information comprises global packet radio service gateway support node information.

19. A computer-readable storage medium of claim 18, wherein the global packet radio service gateway support node information is an access point name.

20. A computer-readable storage medium of claim 16, wherein the network information comprises a mobile country code, a mobile network code, a source internet protocol address, or a combination thereof.
