Abstract

A patient resuscitation/respiratory system includes a system control unit with a timer module controlling a plurality of air pressure modules. In an exemplary embodiment, the air pressure modules include a first air pressure module for controlling a first flow of pressurized gas from a first pressurized gas supply to an inflatable abdominal cuff, a second air pressure module for controlling a second flow of pressurized gas from the first gas supply to an inflatable chest cuff, and a third air pressure module for controlling a third flow of pressurized gas from the first gas supply to an inflatable leg cuff. The control unit in this embodiment includes a ventilator supply module for controlling a flow of breathable gas from a second pressurized gas supply to a patient ventilator module to periodically connect the patient ventilator module and the patient'"'"'s lungs to the breathable gas supply. The timer module is configured to automatically cycle the plurality of air pressure modules to periodically inflate and deflate the cuffs in a resuscitation mode. The system control unit in a portable embodiment may be battery powered, and the gas supplies may be portable compressed gas cylinders.

Claims

1. A patient resuscitation/respiratory system, comprising:

a housing;

a system control unit disposed within the housing, the system control unit comprising;

a timer module;

a plurality of air pressure modules, including a first air pressure module for controlling a first flow of pressurized gas from a first pressurized gas supply to an inflatable abdomen cuff, a second air pressure module for controlling a second flow of pressurized gas from the first gas supply to an inflatable chest cuff, and a third air pressure module for controlling a third flow of pressurized gas from the first gas supply to an inflatable leg cuff;

a ventilator supply module for controlling a flow of breathable gas from a second pressurized gas supply to a patient ventilator module to periodically connect the patient ventilator module and the patient'"'"'s lungs to the second pressurized gas supply;

an air injection system for diluting said first flow, said second flow and said third flow of pressurized gas from the first pressurized gas supply with ambient air;

the timer module configured to automatically cycle the plurality of air pressure modules to periodically inflate and deflate the cuffs in a resuscitation mode.

2. The system of claim 1, wherein said timer module is an electronic timer module, and said plurality of air pressure modules are electrically controlled by said electronic timer module.

3. The system of claim 1, wherein the system is portable, and the system control unit includes a battery for supplying electrical power to the system.

4. The system of claim 1, further comprising:

a first hose connector for connection to the first supply of gas;

a second hose connector for connection to the second supply of gas;

a third hose connector fluidically connected to the ventilator supply module and configured for removable connection to the patient ventilator module;

a fourth hose connector fluidically connected to the first air pressure module and configured for removable connection to a hose connected to the inflatable chest cuff;

a fifth hose connector fluidically connected to the second air pressure module and configured for removable connection to a hose connected to the inflatable abdomen cuff; and

a sixth hose connector fluidically connected to the third air pressure module and configured for removable connection to a hose connected to the inflatable leg cuff.

The system of claim 1, further comprising a disposable patient kit, the kit comprising an inflatable chest cuff adapted to extend over a patient'"'"'s chest, an inflatable abdomen cuff adapted to extend over a patient'"'"'s abdomen, an inflatable leg cuff adapted to extend over at least an upper portion of one of a patient'"'"'s legs, and a patient ventilator module, the patient ventilator module including a face mask and a patient valve, said chest cuff, said abdomen cuff, said leg cuff and said patient ventilator module configured for removable connection to said system control unit.

6. The system of claim 1, wherein the system is a portable system, and further includes:

a first portable tank for holding the first pressurized gas supply; and

a second portable tank for holding the second gas supply and the breathable gas is oxygen.

The system of claim 1, wherein said air injection system for diluting said first flow, said second flow and said third flow of pressurized gas from the first pressurized gas supply with ambient air includes, for each air pressure module, a valve nozzle in fluid communication with a chamber and a check valve, and wherein which air from the first pressurized gas supply flows at high velocity through the nozzle, to cause air pressure in said chamber to drop so as to open said check valve and entrain ambient air to dilute the pressurized gas with ambient air.

8. The system of claim 1, wherein the timer module is configured to operate the chest cuff in counter phase to the abdominal cuff during said resuscitation mode.

9. The system of claim 1, wherein the timer module is configured to synchronize operation of the ventilator supply module with the abdominal cuff during said resuscitation mode to prevent insufflations of the patient'"'"'s stomach.

10. The system of claim 1, wherein the timer module is configured to control the second air pressure module and the third air pressure module such that the leg cuff cycles on every fifth cycle of the chest cuff.

11. The system of claim 2, wherein the electronic timer module includes a counter-timer comprising a counter and a resistor-capacitor resonant circuit providing a time base.

12. The system of claim 11, wherein the electronic timer module is resettable to provide an N-step operational sequence.

13. The system of claim 11, wherein said electronic timer module is operable from said time base to sequence and synchronize the operation of the first, second and third air pressure modules and said ventilator supply module.

The system of claim 11, wherein said electronic timer module further comprises, for each of said first, second and third air pressure modules, an electrically actuated pneumatic valve, and a switch circuit comprising a resistor-capacitor circuit to provide a full voltage provided by a battery to briefly power a valve actuator circuit, expediting valve state transition, then decreases to a lower voltage which sustains an actuator circuit excitation and valve position with reduced power consumption and dissipation.

15. The system of claim 14, wherein said switch circuit includes a high current MOS-FET switches with low ON-resistance to achieve efficient battery power utilization and minimal switch heating.

16. The system of claim 11, wherein the electronic timer module includes a Schmitt trigger gate and a resistor-capacitor circuit to produce a counter reset pulse.

The system of claim 11, wherein the timer module further includes an electrically actuated pneumatic valve for each of said first, second and third air pressure modules and the ventilator supply module, and a decoder circuit responsive to electrical outputs of the counter to produce electrical outputs to control the respective pneumatic valves when appropriate counts have been achieved.

18. A portable system for performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation on a patient, comprising:

a first portable tank for holding a first gas supply of pressurized gas;

a second portable tank for holding a second gas supply of breathable air;

an inflatable abdominal cuff adapted to extend over a patient'"'"'s abdomen;

an inflatable chest cuff adapted to extend over a patient'"'"'s chest;

at least one inflatable leg cuff adapted to extend over at least an upper portion of one of a patient'"'"'s legs;

a face mask for providing fluid communication to the patient'"'"'s lungs;

a system control unit, comprising a battery-powered electronic timer module including a plurality of electrically actuated pneumatic valves, a first air pressure module for controlling a first flow of the first gas supply to the abdominal cuff, a second air pressure module for controlling a second flow of the first gas supply to the inflatable chest cuff, a third air pressure module for controlling a third flow of the first gas supply to the at least one leg cuff, and a ventilator supply module for controlling a flow of breathable gas from the second gas supply to the face mask;

the timer module configured to automatically cycle the plurality of pneumatic valves to periodically inflate and deflate the cuffs in a resuscitation mode;

a patient valve connected between the face mask and the ventilator supply module, to periodically connect the face mask and the patient'"'"'s lungs to the second gas supply.

19. The system of claim 18, wherein the system control unit further comprises an air dilution system for diluting the first, second and third flows of gas from the first gas supply with ambient air to supply the abdominal, chest and leg cuffs.

The system of claim 18, wherein the control unit includes a first connector port configured for connection to a hose connected to the first gas supply, and a second connector port configured for connection to a hose connected to the second gas supply, and wherein the first and second connector ports are arranged with means to prevent connection of the hose for the second gas supply to the first connector port, and to prevent connection of the hose for the first gas supply to the second connector port.

The system of claim 20, wherein the control unit includes a third connector port fluidically coupled to the first air pressure module for connection to a hose connected to abdomen cuff, a fourth connector port fluidically coupled to the second air pressure module for connection to a hose connected the chest cuff, a fifth connector port fluidically coupled to the third air pressure module for connection to a hose connected to the leg cuff, and a sixth connector port fluidically connected to the ventilator supply module for connection to said patient valve.

The system of claim 21, wherein said respective third, fourth, fifth and sixth connector ports have respective connector visual indicia corresponding to respective hose visual indicia for to indicate proper connection of the respective cuffs and patient valve and the respective corresponding connector ports.

23. The system of claim 18, further comprising a patient back board, and wherein the inflatable cuffs are attachable to the back board in a ready position for immediate application to the patient.

24. The system of claim 18, wherein the electronic timer module comprises a counter-timer comprising a multistage ripple counter and a resistor-capacitor resonant circuit providing a time base.

25. The system of claim 24, wherein the electronic timer module resettable to provide an N-step operational sequence.

26. The system of claim 18, further comprising an air injection system for diluting said first flow, said second flow and said third flow of pressurized gas from the first pressurized gas supply with ambient air.

27. A control unit for a portable system for performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation on a patient, comprising:

a housing;

a battery-powered electronic timer module disposed in the housing;

a plurality of air pressure modules each including an electrically actuated pneumatic valve disposed within the housing, including a first air pressure module for controlling a first flow of a first pressurized gas to an inflatable abdominal cuff, a second air pressure module for controlling a second flow of the first pressurized gas to an inflatable chest cuff, and a third air pressure module for controlling a third flow of the first pressurized gas to an inflatable leg cuff;

a ventilator supply module for controlling the application of a pressurized breathable gas to a face mask;

the timer module configured to automatically cycle the plurality of pneumatic valves to periodically inflate and deflate the cuffs in a resuscitation mode.

The control unit of claim 27, wherein the control unit includes a first connector port configured for connection to a first hose connected to a first tank containing the first pressurized gas, and a second connector port configured for connection to a second hose connected to a second tank containing the pressurized breathable gas.

29. The control unit of claim 28, wherein the first and second connector ports are configured to prevent connection of the second hose to the first connector port, and to prevent connection of the first hose to the second connector port.

30. The system of claim 28, wherein the control unit includes a third connector port fluidically coupled to the first air pressure module for connection to a hose connected to the abdominal cuff, a fourth connector port fluidically coupled to the second air pressure module for connection to a hose connected to the chest cuff, a fifth connector port fluidically coupled to the third air pressure module for connection to a fifth hose connected to the leg cuff, and a sixth connector port fluidically connected to the ventilator supply module for connection to the face mask.

31. The system of claim 30, wherein said respective third, fourth, fifth and sixth connector ports have respective unique connector visual indicia corresponding to respective hose visual unique visual indicia to indicate proper connection of the respective hoses and connector ports.

32. The system of claim 30, wherein said first, second, third, fourth, fifth and sixth ports are mounted to the housing.

33. The system of claim 27, further comprising a rechargeable battery for providing electrical power to the timer module.

34. The system of claim 27, wherein the electronic timer module comprises a counter-timer comprising a multistage ripple counter and a resistor-capacitor resonant circuit providing a time base.

35. A disposable patient interface kit for a system for performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation on a patient, the system including a control unit, the kit comprising:

an inflatable abdominal cuff adapted to extend over a patient'"'"'s abdomen and an associated first hose configured for fluidic connection to the abdominal cuff, the first hose having a first connector configured for connection to a corresponding first connector on the control unit;

an inflatable chest cuff adapted to extend over a patient'"'"'s chest and an associated second hose configured for fluidic connection to the chest cuff, the second hose having a second connector configured for connection to a corresponding second connector on the control unit;

at least one inflatable leg cuff adapted to extend over at least an upper portion of one of a patient'"'"'s legs and an associated third hose configured for fluidic connection to the at least one leg cuff, the third hose having a third connector configured for connection to a corresponding third connector on the control unit;

a ventilator module including a face mask for providing fluid communication to the patient'"'"'s lungs, a patient valve, and an associated fourth hose configured for fluidic connection to the patient valve, the fourth hose having a fourth connector configured for connection to a corresponding fourth connector on the control unit.

36. The patient interface kit of claim 35, wherein said respective first, second, third and fourth connectors have respective unique connector visual indicia to visually distinguish each connector from all others of said connectors.

37. The patient interface kit of claim 35, wherein each of said cuffs includes an inflatable bladder.

38. The patient interface kit of claim 35, wherein each of said cuffs include hook and loop fasteners to secure the cuffs in position for use on a patient.
