Abstract

A sensor apparatus and sensor apparatus system for use in conjunction with a cassette, including a disposable or replaceable cassette. In some embodiments, the cassette includes a thermal well for permitting the sensing of various properties of a subject media. The thermal well includes a hollow housing of a thermally conductive material. In other embodiments, the cassette includes sensor leads for sensing of various properties of a subject media. The thermal well has an inner surface shaped so as to form a mating relationship with a sensing probe. The mating thermally couples the inner surface with a sensing probe. In some embodiments, the thermal well is located on a disposable portion and the sensing probe on a reusable portion.

Claims

1. A cassette comprising a fluid conduit including at least two sensor elements adjacent the conduit having the ability to permit both temperature and electrical conductivity sensing of fluid passing through the conduit, wherein the sensor elements are adapted for interconnection with a sensing probe comprising at least one sensor configured to measure temperature, and at least one lead configured to transmit electrical conductivity.

2. A cassette according to claim 1, wherein the sensor elements comprise a thermal well that extends into the fluid conduit.

3. The cassette according to claim 2, wherein the well is adapted for disengageable interconnection with the sensing probe.

4. The cassette according to claim 3, wherein the well is coupled to the cassette using at least one of press fit connection, flexible tabs, adhesive, ultrasonic weld, and a retaining plate and fastener.

5. The cassette according to claim 3, wherein said thermal well comprises:

a hollow housing of a thermally and electrically conductive material, said housing having an outer surface that can contact fluid within the conduit and an inner surface, said inner surface of a predetermined shape so as to form a mating relationship with the sensing probe, wherein said mating thermally and electrically couples the inner surface with the sensing probe.

6. A method for determining temperature and electrical conductivity of a subject media using a cassette containing at least one sensor element adjacent a conduit capable of carrying said media, said method comprising the steps of:

thermally coupling the at least one sensor element with a sensing probe such that temperature and electrical conductivity can be determined;

transferring thermal and electrical conductivity signals through at least 3 leads from said sensing probe; and

determining temperature and conductivity using said signals.

7. A method according to claim 6, wherein the sensor element is a thermal well.

8. A sensing system for sensing subject media in a fluid path in a cassette comprising:

a first sensing probe capable of sensing electrical conductivity;

a second sensing probe capable of sensing both temperature and electrical conductivity; and

at least two wells in the fluid path of the cassette, wherein one well is in disengageable contact with the first sensing probe, and the other well is in disengageable contact with the second sensing probe for thermal sensing and conductivity sensing.

9. The sensing system according to claim 8, further comprising:

a pump chamber and associated diaphragm on the cassette in fluid communication with the fluid path.

A cassette comprising a pump chamber, a diaphragm associated with the pump chamber, and a fluid conduit including at least one sensor element adjacent the conduit having the ability to permit both temperature and electrical conductivity sensing of fluid passing through the conduit, wherein the sensor element is adapted for interconnection with a sensing probe.

11. A cassette according to claim 10, wherein the sensor element comprises a thermal well that extends into the fluid conduit.

12. The cassette according to claim 11, wherein the well is adapted for disengageable interconnection with the sensing probe, and wherein the sensing probe is configured to measure both temperature and electrical conductivity.

13. The cassette according to claim 12, wherein the well is coupled to the cassette using at least one of press fit connection, flexible tabs, adhesive, ultrasonic weld, and a retaining plate and fastener.

14. A cassette according to claim 12, wherein said thermal well comprises:

a hollow housing of a thermally and electrically conductive material, said housing having an outer surface that can contact fluid within the conduit and an inner surface, said inner surface of a predetermined shape so as to form a mating relationship with the sensing probe, wherein said mating thermally and electrically couples the inner surface with the sensing probe.

15. A fluid pumping cassette comprising at least one pump, a fluid conduit and at least one well for transmitting temperature and permitting electrical conductivity sensing of fluid passing through the conduit, wherein the at least one well is adapted for interconnection with a sensing probe.

16. A fluid pumping cassette according to claim 15, wherein the cassette further comprises a diaphragm and at least one valve, said diaphragm capable of actuating the pump and the valve.

17. A fluid pumping cassette according to claim 15, wherein the at least one pump includes at least one pump chamber in fluid communication with the fluid conduit.

18. A method for determining temperature and electrical conductivity of a subject media using a cassette comprising a pump chamber, a conduit for carrying said media, and at least one sensor element adjacent the conduit, said method comprising the steps of:

thermally coupling a thermal well and at least one sensor element with a sensing probe such that temperature and electrical conductivity can be determined;

pumping the media through the conduit using the pump chamber;

transferring thermal and electrical conductivity signals through at least 3 leads from said sensing probe; and

determining temperature and conductivity using said signals.

19. A method according to claim 18, wherein the sensor element is a thermal well.
