Abstract

The embodiments of the present disclosure are directed towards a method and apparatus for providing roll compensation in a control device, the method and apparatus including acquiring rotational data and linear data indicative of movement of the control device, applying roll compensation to the acquired data, and removing a roll compensation error from the roll compensated data. Inertial sensors such as gyroscope sensors and accelerometer sensor(s) may be used to acquire the rotational and linear data.

Claims

1. A method for providing roll compensation in a control device, the method comprising the steps of:

acquiring rotational data and linear data indicative of movement of the control device

applying a roll compensation to the acquired data; and

removing a roll compensation error from the roll compensated data.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the step of acquiring rotational data includes the step of receiving rotational data from a gyroscope sensor.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein the step of acquiring linear data includes the step of receiving linear data from an accelerometer.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein the step of applying the roll compensation to the acquired data includes applying roll compensation to the acquired rotational data.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein the step of applying the roll compensation includes applying a roll compensation on the acquired data without translating a frame of reference.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein the step of removing the roll compensation error includes removing a roll compensation error from the roll compensated data without calculating the centrifugal and linear acceleration of the control device.

8. The method of claim 1, further comprising the step of:

using the roll compensated data to control a movement of a graphical element after the roll compensation error is removed from the roll compensated data.

9. The method of claim 8, wherein the graphical element is one of a cursor, a highlight box, a menu, a game character and a graphical object.

10. The method of claim 1, further comprising the step of:

using the roll compensated data to control a movement of a movable device after the roll compensation error is removed from the roll compensated data.

11. The method of claim 10 wherein the movable device is one of a remote controlled car, remote controlled plane, remote controlled boat and remote controlled electro-mechanical device.

12. The method of claim 1, wherein the control device is one of a remote control, a mouse, a game controller, a virtual reality controller, a pointer, a mobile device and a digital media input devices.

13. The method of claim 1, wherein the control device is integrate into a hand-held platform.

14. The method of claim 13, wherein the hand-held platform is one of a game console, a personal digital assistant, a cell phone, a wireless phone and a mobile television.

5. The method of claim 5, wherein the step of removing the roll compensation error includes processing the acquired linear data such that the roll compensation error is removed from the roll compensated rotational data.

15. A control device comprising:

means for acquiring rotational data and linear data indicative of movement of the control device;

means for applying a roll compensation to the acquired data; and

means for removing a roll compensation error from the roll compensated data.

16. The control device of claim 15, wherein the means for acquiring rotational data is a gyroscope sensor

17. The control device of claim 15, wherein the means for acquiring linear data includes an accelerometer.

18. The control device of claim 15, wherein the means for applying the roll compensation to the acquired data includes means for applying roll compensation to the acquired rotational data.

19. The control device of claim 18, wherein the means for removing the roll compensation error includes means for processing the acquired linear data such that the roll compensation error is removed from the roll compensated rotational data.

20. The control device of claim 15, wherein the means for applying the roll compensation includes means for applying a roll compensation on the acquired data without translating a frame of reference.

21. The control device of claim 15, wherein the means for removing the roll compensation error includes means for removing a roll compensation error from the roll compensated data without calculating the centrifugal and linear acceleration of the control device.
