Abstract

Polysaccharide thermosetting systems and composites utilizing such systems include formaldehyde free binders formed from at least one polysaccharide and at least one polysaccharide crosslinker.

Claims

1. Composite comprising:

a formaldehyde free binder comprising at least one polysaccharide and at least one polysaccharide crosslinkers; and

a mineral wool or lignocellulosic substrate.

2. Composite according to claim 1, wherein the at least one polysaccharide is a non-starch polysaccharide.

3. Composite according to claim 2, wherein the at least one non-starch polysaccharide is selected from the group consisting of cellulose, guar, xanthan, alginates, pectin and gellan and their derivatives.

4. Composite according to claim 3, wherein the cellulosic derivatives are hydroxy propyl cellulose or carboxy methylcellulose.

5. Composite according to claim 2 wherein the at least one polysaccharide is a non-amylose starch.

6. Composite according to claim 2 wherein the at least one polysaccharide is a low-amylose starch.

7. Composite according to claim 1, wherein the mineral wool is fiberglass, ceramic fibers, stone wool or rock wool.

8. Composite according to claim 1, wherein the lignocellulosic substrate is wood in the form of particles or fragments.

9. Composite according to claim 1, wherein the polysaccharide crosslinker is selected from the group consisting of adipic/acetic mixed anhydride, epichlorohydrin, sodium trimetaphosphate, sodium trimetaphosphate/sodium tripolyphosphate, and phosphorous oxychloride, polyamide-epichlorohydrin crosslinking agents, anhydride containing polymers, Cyclic Amide Condensates, zirconium and titanium complexes, adipic acid dihydrazide, di-epoxides and polyepoxide compounds, di-functional monomers, dianhydrides, acetals, polyfunctional silanes, blocked aldehydes, polycarboxylates, boron compounds and combinations thereof.

10. Composite according to claim 1, wherein the weight percent of the polysaccharide crosslinker in the formaldehyde free binder is from about 0.1 to about 70 percent.

11. Composite according to claim 1, wherein the formaldehyde free binder further comprises an additive.

12. Composite according to claim 11, wherein the additive at least provides moisture or water resistance.

13. Composite according to claim 1, wherein the formaldehyde free binder further comprises a catalyst.

14. Composite according to claim 1, wherein the weight percent of the binder is less than 50 weight percent of the weight of the composite.

15. Composite according to claim 1, wherein the binder is applied as an aqueous solution and the pH of the aqueous solution is greater than 3.

16. Method of forming a composite comprising:

preparing a formaldehyde free binder from one or more polysaccharides and polysaccharides crosslinkers;

depositing the formaldehyde free binder on to a mineral wool or lignocellulosic substrate; and

curing the binder.

17. Method of forming a composite according to claim 16, wherein the polysaccharide is a non-starch polysaccharide.

18. Method of forming a composite according to claim 17, wherein the non-starch polysaccharides are selected from the group consisting of cellulose, guar, xanthan, alginates, pectin and gellan and their derivatives.

19. Method of forming a composite according to claim 18, wherein the cellulosic derivatives are hydroxy propyl cellulose or carboxy methylcellulose.

20. Method of forming a composite according to claim 16 wherein the at least one polysaccharide is a non-amylose starch.

21. Method of forming a composite according to claim 16 wherein the at least one polysaccharide is a low amylose starch.

22. Method of forming a composite according to claim 16, wherein the substrate is a mineral wool or lignocellulosic substrate.

23. Method of forming a composite according to claim 16, wherein the mineral wool is fiberglass, ceramic fibers, stone wool or rock wool.

24. Method of forming a composite according to claim 16, wherein the polysaccharide crosslinker is selected from the group consisting of adipic/acetic mixed anhydride, epichlorohydrin, sodium trimetaphosphate, sodium trimetaphosphate/sodium tripolyphosphate, and phosphorous oxychloride, polyamide-epichlorohydrin crosslinking agents, anhydride containing polymers, Cyclic Amide Condensates, zirconium and titanium complexes, adipic acid dihydrazide, di-epoxides and polyepoxide compounds, di-functional monomers, dianhydrides, acetals, polyfunctional silanes, blocked aldehydes, polycarboxylates,boron compounds and combinations thereof.

25. Method of forming a composite according to claim 16, wherein the weight percent of the low amylose starch crosslinker in the formaldehyde free binder is from about 0.1 to 70 percent.

26. Method of forming a composite according to claim 16, wherein the weight percent of the binder is less than 50 weight percent of the weight of the composite.
