Abstract

A method and system are disclosed for acquiring and transforming existing content (e.g., Hyper Text Markup Language HTML content) for display and execution on multiple platforms and architectures. In one embodiment, capture templates are created to harvest content from disparate content sources on multiple platforms. Data is extracted from the content from the disparate content sources using the created capture templates that drives extracting process. A standardized data stream is generated from the extracted data. The standardized data stream is provided for display on one or more different type of platforms.

Claims

1. A method for providing content comprising:

identifying a target platform for combined video content based on a request for content communicated from the target platform;

locating and harvesting the requested content to obtain a platform-neutral version of the requested content and combining the platform-neutral version of the requested content with video content to produce the combined video content; and

delivering the combined video content via a content distribution network to the target platform for display to a viewer, wherein;

the combined video content for the target platform is produced according to;

meta-data information about design objects and properties of the combined video content stored in data store.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the requested content includes Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) content, Extensible Markup Language (XML) content, JavaScript content, Java content, custom code content, or media content.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein the requested content comprises Internet protocol based content.

4. The method of claim 3, further comprising converting and delivering the Internet protocol based content for interactive services provided to the target platform

5. The method of claim 4, wherein the converting and delivering of the Internet based content includes using templates to convert and deliver the Internet protocol based content.

6. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

delivering the combined video content using an external cache.

7. The method of claim 6, wherein delivering the combined video content includes dynamically loading the requested content in the external cache to combine with the video content.

8. The method of claim 6, wherein delivering the combined content includes loading the requested content in the external cache to combine with the video content according to a schedule.

9. The method of claim 1, wherein the data store is a semantic based data store.

10. A data processing system, comprising:

a processing unit configured to produce combined video content by combining a platform-neutral version of viewer-requested content with video content and configured to deliver the combined video content via a content distribution network to a specific platform for display to a viewer; and

a computer-readable repository accessible by the processing unit, the repository comprising a first data store configured to store meta-data relating to design objects and properties of multiple target platforms for the combined video content, and to provide specific meta-data relating to design objects and properties for delivery of the combined video content to the specific platform,

wherein the combined video content is produced according to the meta-data stored in the first data store.

11. The data processing system of claim 10, wherein the meta-data is used to capture, version, catalogue, index, or query information.

12. The data processing system of claim 10, wherein the repository further comprises:

a second data store to store screen designs, templates, business logic, or conversion tables for delivering the combined video content to the specific platform.

13. The data processing system of claim 10, wherein the first data store is a semantic network based data store.

14. The data processing system of claim 10, wherein the first data store further stores meta-data relating to variants, stacked configurations, and language filtering for multiple target platforms for the combined video content.

15. A computer-implemented method comprising:

parsing a Hyper Text Markup Language (HTML) page;

creating an XHTML-compliant document from the HTML page;

extracting content from the XHTML-compliant document using a capture template specifying how elements of the XHTML-compliant document are to be located for retrieval;

creating one or more extensible markup language (XML) files or documents from the extracted content; and

transforming the XML files or documents into a displayable format.

16. The method of claim 15, wherein the parsing of the HTML page includes:

converting the HTML page to a standard XHTML-compliant document, and extracting tags and attributes from the XHTML-compliant document.

17. The method of claim 15, wherein transforming the XML files or documents includes transforming the XML files or documents into displayable format for a television display, computing device display or portable electronic device display.

18. The method of claim 15, further comprising:

storing the XML files or documents in a repository; and

storing the capture templates in a repository or machine-readable medium.

19. The method of claim 15, wherein creating the XML files or documents includes selectively dragging tags and attributes from the parsed HTML page into a template.

20. The method of claim 15, further comprising creating content for a specific platform using the XML file.
