Abstract

An RFID device for tires includes first and second sheets non-conducting insulation material having positioned therebetween a semi-conductor chip and a wireless antenna formed of electrically conducting ink printed on one of said sheets.

Claims

1. A radio frequency identification device (RFID) for tires comprising:

(a) a first sheet of non-conducting insulation material having a peripheral edge;

(b) a semiconductor chip mounted on said first sheet spaced from said edge;

(c) a second sheet of non-conducting insulation material overlying said semiconductor chip and having an annular portion sealingly engaged to said peripheral edge; and

,

(d) a wireless antenna operatively engaged to said semiconductor chip mounted on said first sheet or said second sheet, said antenna being electrically conducting ink.

2. The RFID device of claim 1 wherein said wireless antenna is located between said first and second sheets and wherein all portions of said first and second sheets except those portions overlying said antenna and said semiconductor chip are sealed together.

3. The RFID device of claim 1 wherein said antenna has a formulation which includes 75% to 100% silver resin.

4. The RFID device of claim 3 wherein said antenna formulation includes up to 25% carbon/vinyl.

5. The RFID device of claim 1 wherein said antenna has a formulation which includes 75% to 100% silver resin and up to 25% carbon/vinyl.

6. The RFID device of claim 1 wherein each of said first sheet and said second sheet has a thickness in the range of 0.05 mm to 3 mm.

7. The RFID device of claim 1 wherein the electrically conducting ink antenna has a thickness in the range of 0.0006 mm to 0.34 mm.

8. The RFID device of claim 1 wherein said antenna includes a pair of tabs engaged to said semiconductor chip and having extending therefrom linear and/or arcuate antenna sections.

9. The RFID device of claim 1 wherein said antenna has a resistance in the range of 200 ohms to 300 ohms.

10. The RFID device of claim 1 wherein said antenna has a resistance in the range of 1 ohm to 500 ohms.

11. The RFID device of claim 8 wherein said antenna has a resistance in the range of 200 ohms to 300 ohms.

12. The RFID device of claim 10 wherein said antenna has a resistance in the range of 200 ohms to 300 ohms.

13. The RFID device of claim 1 wherein said first and second sheets are formed of green rubber.

14. A radio frequency identification device (RFID) for tires comprising:

(a) a first sheet of green rubber non-conducting insulation material having a peripheral edge;

(b) a semiconductor chip mounted on said first sheet spaced from said edge;

(c) a second sheet of green rubber non-conducting insulation material overlying said semiconductor chip and having an annular portion sealingly engaged to said peripheral edge; and

,

(d) a wireless antenna of electrically conducting ink operatively engaged to said semiconductor, said antenna being located between said first and second sheets, all portions of said first and second sheets except those portions overlying said antenna and said semiconductor chip being sealed together, said ink having a formulation which includes 75% to 100% silver resin and up to 25% carbon/vinyl.

15. The RFID device of claim 14 wherein each of said first sheet and said second sheet has a thickness in the range of 0.05 mm to 3 mm.

16. The RFID device of claim 14 wherein the electrically conducting ink antenna has a thickness in the range of 0.0006 mm to 0.34 mm.

17. The RFID device of claim 14 wherein said antenna includes a pair of tabs engaged to said semiconductor chip and having extending therefrom linear and/or arcuate antenna sections.

18. The RFID device of claim 14 wherein said antenna has a resistance in the range of 200 ohms to 300 ohms.

19. The RFID device of claim 14 wherein said antenna has a resistance in the range of 1 ohm to 500 ohms.

20. The RFID device of claim 17 wherein said antenna has a resistance in the range of 200 ohms to 300 ohms.

21. The RFID device of claim 17 wherein said antenna has a resistance in the range of 1 ohm to 500 ohms.

22. An antenna for a radio frequency device comprising electrically conducting ink positioned between first and second insulating members, said antenna having (a) a pair of tabs adapted to be operatively engaged to a semiconducted microchip and (b) a formulation of 75% to 100% silver resin and up to 25% carbon/vinyl.

23. The antenna of claim 22 wherein said first and second insulation members are sheets of green rubber sealed together.

24. The antenna of claim 23 wherein each of said first insulation member and said second insulation member has a thickness in the range of 0.05 mm to 3 mm.

25. The antenna of claim 22 wherein the electrically conducting ink has a thickness in the range of 0.0006 mm to 0.34 mm.

26. The antenna of claim 22 wherein said antenna has a resistance in the range of 200 ohms to 300 ohms/

27. The antenna device of claim 22 wherein said antenna has a resistance in the range of 1 ohm to 500 ohms.

28. A method for manufacturing a radio frequency identification device (RFID) for tires comprising the steps of:

(a) providing a first sheet of non-conducting insulation material;

(b) mounting a semiconductor chip on said first sheet;

(c) printing electrically conducting ink defining an antenna on said first sheet to be operatively engaged to said computer chip;

(d) curing said ink;

(e) engaging a second sheet of non-conducting insulation material overlying said semiconductor chip and antenna; and

,

(f) sealing said second sheet to said first sheet.

29. The method of claim 28 further including the step of formulating ink with 75% to 100% silver resin and up to 25% carbon/vinyl.

30. The method of claim 29 further including the step of curing said ink for at least 10 minutes at a temperature of at least 100°

C.

31. The method of claim 28 further including the steps of providing said first sheet and said second sheet with a thickness in the range of 0.05 mm to 3 mm.

32. The method of claim 28 further including the steps of printing said electrically conducting ink with a thickness in the range of 0.0006 mm to 0.34 mm.

33. The method of claim 32 further including the step of printing said ink with a pair of tabs engaged to said semiconductor chip and having extending therefrom linear and/or arcuate antenna sections.

34. The method of claim 28 further including the step of printing said ink to provide said antenna with resistance in the range of 200 ohms to 300 ohms.

35. The method of claim 28 further including the step of printing said ink to provide said antenna with resistance in the range of 1 ohm to 500 ohms.

36. The method of claim 28 wherein green rubber is used in providing said first and second sheets.
