Abstract

Medical patient monitoring devices that have the capability of detecting the physical proximity of a clinician are disclosed. The medical patient monitoring devices may be configured to perform a selected action when the presence of a clinician is detected. Systems and methods for facilitating communication between medical devices that use different medical communication protocol formats are also disclosed. For example, a medical communication protocol translator can be configured to receive an input message formatted according to a first protocol format from a first medical device and to output an output message formatted according to a second protocol format supported by a second medical device using a set of translation rules. Medical monitoring reporting systems are also disclosed. The medical monitoring reporting systems may be used to analyze a stored collection of physiological parameter data to simulate the effect of changing various medical monitoring options.

Claims

1. A medical patient monitoring device for displaying information associated with one or more medical patients, the medical patient monitoring device comprising:

an interface configured to receive information associated with at least one patient;

a display configured to display the information;

a processor configured to control the information appearing on the display; and

a detector for detecting the physical presence of a clinician token within a detection area in the vicinity of the medical patient monitoring device, the clinician token being indicative of the identity of a clinician,

wherein the processor is further configured to take a first predetermined action in response to detection of the clinician token, the first predetermined action being associated with the identity of the clinician.

2. The medical patient monitoring device of claim 1, wherein the first predetermined action comprises changing the information appearing on the display.

3. The medical patient monitoring device of claim 1, wherein the first predetermined action comprises displaying information associated with one or more patients under the care of the clinician.

The medical patient monitoring device of claim 1, further comprising a screen feature that provides on the display feedback to the clinician that the detector has detected the clinician token and acknowledges the clinician proximity to the medical patient monitoring device, wherein the screen feature is a transient multi-sided solid depicted on the display to rotate from a previous screen shown on a first side to a preferred screen shown on a second side in response to clinician proximity.

7. A medical patient monitoring device for monitoring physiological information, the medical patient monitoring device comprising:

an interface configured to receive physiological information associated with at least one patient;

a processor configured to determine a patient physiological parameter based on the physiological information; and

a detector for detecting the physical presence of a clinician token within a detection area in the vicinity of the medical patient monitoring device, the clinician token being indicative of the identity of a clinician,

wherein the processor is further configured to take a first predetermined action in response to detection of the clinician token, the first predetermined action being associated with the identity of the clinician.

8. The medical patient monitoring device of claim 7, wherein the predetermined action comprises logging the clinician into the medical patient monitoring device.

9. The medical patient monitoring device of claim 7, wherein the predetermined action comprises setting the configuration of the medical patient monitoring device.

10. The medical patient monitoring device of claim 7, wherein the predetermined action comprises enabling a function offered by the medical patient monitoring device.

11. The medical patient monitoring device of claim 7, wherein the predetermined action comprises altering the substance of information displayed by the medical patient monitoring device.

12. The medical patient monitoring device of claim 7, wherein the predetermined action comprises altering the formatting of information displayed by the medical patient monitoring device.

13. The medical patient monitoring device of claim 7, wherein the predetermined action comprises transmitting physiological information to a remote device.

15. The medical patient monitoring device of claim 7, wherein the processor is further configured to take a second predetermined action once the presence of the clinician token is no longer detected.

16. The medical patient monitoring device of claim 15, wherein the second predetermined action reverses the first predetermined action.

22. The medical patient monitoring device of claim 7, further comprising logic for, in the case where the detector detects the presence of a plurality of clinician tokens within the detection area, selecting a clinician token upon the basis of which to perform the first predetermined action using a plurality of priority indicators associated with the clinician tokens.

23. The medical patient monitoring device of claim 7, wherein the detector is configured to detect the physical presence of the clinician token based, at least in part, upon the strength of a wireless signal from the clinician token.

24. The medical patient monitoring device of claim 7, wherein the detector is configured to detect the physical presence of the clinician token based, at least in part, upon the length of time during which a wireless signal is detected from the clinician token.

26. The medical patient monitoring device of claim 7, wherein the medical patient monitoring device comprises a bedside patient monitor having an input port for communicatively coupling to a medical parameter sensor that senses the physiological information.

The medical patient monitoring device of claim 7, wherein the medical patient monitoring device comprises a central monitoring station configured to be communicatively coupled to a plurality of bedside patient monitors, and to receive therefrom physiological information from a plurality of patients.

28. A clinician token for communicating the identity of a clinician to a medical patient monitoring device, the clinician token comprising:

a memory configured to store a clinical identification code associated with identity of a medical clinician;

a communication module configured to wirelessly communicate the clinical identification code to a medical monitoring device in response to the clinician token being positioned within a detection area associated with the medical patient monitoring device, the communication module further configured to cause a medical monitoring device to display clinical information associated with the clinician in response to receiving the clinical identification code.

29. The clinician token of claim 28, further comprising an input module configured to receive a command from the clinician, and to cause the communication module to communicate with the medical monitoring device in response to the command.
