Abstract

Aspects of the present invention comprise systems and methods for determining image content characteristics, determining ambient illumination conditions, selecting an appropriate backlight level based on the image content characteristics and the ambient illumination conditions and selecting a tone scale curve for image enhancement wherein the tone scale curve is intended to enhance the image for display under the ambient illumination conditions using the selected backlight level.

Claims

1. A method for enhancing image display with ambient illumination input, said method comprising:

a) determining an ambient illumination condition near a display device;

b) determining an image content characteristic for an input image to be displayed;

c) calculating a preliminary backlight selection based on said image content characteristic;

d) determining a tone scale process to compensate said input image based on said backlight selection; and

e) modifying said preliminary backlight selection based on said ambient illumination condition thereby creating a modified backlight selection.

2. A method as described in claim 1 further comprising applying said tone scale process to said input image to create an enhanced image.

3. A method as described in claim 2 further comprising displaying said enhanced image using said modified backlight selection.

4. A method as described in claim 1 wherein said image content characteristic is a histogram.

5. A method as described in claim 1 wherein said modifying said preliminary backlight selection comprises a perceptual white point calculation.

6. A method as described in claim 1 wherein said modifying said preliminary backlight selection comprises applying a temporal filter.

7. A method as described in claim 1 wherein said modifying said preliminary backlight selection comprises multiplying said preliminary backlight selection by an ambient-dependent backlight selection determined by a perceptual white calculation module and clipping the result to the range of a display backlight.

8. A method for enhancing image display with ambient illumination input, said method comprising:

a) determining an ambient illumination condition near a display device;

b) determining an image content characteristic for an input image to be displayed;

c) calculating a backlight selection based on said ambient illumination condition and said image content characteristic;

d) determining a tone scale process to compensate said input image based on said backlight selection, said ambient illumination condition and said image content characteristic; and

e) applying said tone scale process to said input image thereby creating an enhanced image.

9. A method as described in claim 8 wherein said determining an ambient illumination condition comprises determining whether ambient luminance intensity falls within a luminance category.

10. A method as described in claim 8 wherein said determining an image content characteristic comprises determining whether a brightness characteristic of said input image falls within a brightness category.

11. A method as described in claim 8 wherein said determining a tonescale process comprises selecting from a plurality of tone scale curves that correspond to various combinations of values for said image content characteristic and said ambient illumination condition.

A method as described in claim 8 wherein said determining a tonescale process comprises selecting a tonescale process that provides contrast matching when said image content characteristic indicates a dim image and said ambient illumination condition indicates a low ambient illumination condition.

13. A method as described in claim 8 wherein said determining a tonescale process comprises selecting a tonescale process that provides contrast matching when said image content characteristic indicates a bright image and said ambient illumination condition indicates a bright ambient illumination condition.

A method as described in claim 8 wherein said determining a tonescale process comprises selecting a tonescale process that provides a near lightness match with increased lightness when said image content characteristic indicates a mid-brightness image and said ambient illumination condition indicates a low ambient illumination condition.

A method as described in claim 8 wherein said determining a tonescale process comprises selecting a tonescale process that provides a near lightness match with decreased lightness when said image content characteristic indicates a mid image and said ambient illumination condition indicates a bright ambient illumination condition.

A method as described in claim 8 wherein said determining a tonescale process comprises selecting a tonescale process that provides lightness matching when said ambient illumination condition indicates a mid-ambient illumination condition, when said image content characteristic indicates a bright image and said ambient illumination condition indicates a low ambient illumination condition, and when said image content characteristic indicates a dim image and said ambient illumination condition indicates a bright ambient illumination condition.

17. A method for enhancing image display with ambient illumination input, said method comprising:

a) determining an ambient illumination condition near a display device;

b) determining an image content characteristic for an input image to be displayed;

c) selecting a backlight illumination level based on said ambient illumination condition and said image content characteristic;

d) if said ambient illumination condition indicates a low ambient illumination condition;

i) if said image content characteristic indicates a dim image,

(1) selecting a dim image/low ambient tone scale with contrast matching;

ii) if said image content characteristic indicates a mid-brightness image,

(1) selecting a mid image/low ambient tone scale that employs a near lightness match with increased lightness;

iii) if said image content characteristic indicates a bright image,

(1) selecting a bright image/low ambient tone scale that employs lightness matching;

e) if said ambient illumination condition indicates a mid ambient illumination condition;

i) selecting a mid ambient tone scale that employs lightness matching;

f) if said ambient illumination condition indicates a bright ambient illumination condition;

i) if said image content indicates a dim image,

(1) selecting a dim image/bright ambient tone scale that employs lightness matching;

ii) if said image content indicates a mid image,

(1) selecting a mid image/bright ambient tone scale that employs a near lightness match with decreased lightness; and

iii) if said image content indicates a bright image,

(1) selecting a bright image/bright ambient tone scale that employs contrast matching;

18. A method as described in claim 17 wherein said image content characteristic is a histogram.

19. A method as described in claim 17 wherein said bright image/bright ambient tone scale also effects decreased lightness where contrast matching occurs.

20. A method as described in claim 17 wherein said dim image/low ambient tone scale also effects increased lightness where contrast matching occurs.
