1. A system for heating food items, the system comprising:

  • an irradiation zone into which a food item can be located for at least one of direct or indirect irradiation;

    a structure for holding directional irradiation devices proximate an irradiation zone such that the irradiation from the irradiation device can either directly or indirectly impact the food item;

    at least one narrowband, semi-conductor-based radiation emitting device operative to selectively emit at least one narrow band of radiation, the at least one narrowband, semi-conductor-based radiation emitting device being a digital device such that it has a very narrow range of voltage change at its turn-on threshold, and the at least one narrowband device being selected based on an irradiation output wavelength that matches an absorption characteristic of at least one food item; and

    ,a control system which at least supplies electrical current to operate the narrowband irradiation devices.
