Abstract

An inductive power transfer system comprises a primary unit 10, having a primary coil 12 and an electrical drive unit 14 which applies electrical drive signals to the primary coil so as to generate an electromagnetic field. The system also comprises at least one secondary device 30, separable from the primary unit and having a secondary coil 32 which couples with the field when the secondary device is in proximity to the primary unit. A control unit 16 causes a circuit including said primary coil to operate, during a measurement period, in an undriven resonating condition. In this condition the application of the drive signals to the primary coil by the electrical drive unit is suspended so that energy stored in the circuit decays over the course of the period. A decay measurement unit 18 takes one or more measures of such energy decay during the measurement period. In dependence upon said one or more energy decay measures, the control unit controls the electrical drive unit so as to restrict or stop inductive power transfer from the primary unit.

Claims

1. A secondary device, for use in an inductive power transfer system that comprises a primary unit which generates an electromagnetic field, the secondary device comprising:

a secondary coil adapted to couple with said field generated by said primary unit when the secondary device is in proximity to the primary unit so that power can be received inductively by the secondary device from the primary unit without direct electrical conductive contacts therebetween;

a load connection unit, connected to said secondary coil and adapted to be connected when the secondary device is in use to a load requiring power from the primary unit, for supplying such inductively-received power to the load; and

a communication unit operable to communicate to the primary unit information relating to a parasitic load imposed on the primary unit by the secondary device.

2. A secondary device as claimed in claim 1, wherein said communication unit is operable to communicate said information to said primary unit, wherein said information contains data of said parasitic load.

3. A secondary device as claimed in claim 2, wherein said communication unit communicates said information by modulating a communication load.

4. A secondary device as claimed in claim 1, wherein said communication unit is operable to communicate said information by varying a load on said primary unit from which said primary unit can derive the parasitic load imposed on the primary unit by the secondary device.

5. A secondary device as claimed in claim 4, wherein said load is a resistor having a resistance value selected to communicate a friendly parasitic load to the secondary device.

6. A secondary device as claimed in claim 4, wherein said load is a feedback resistor having a resistance value selected to communicate a friendly parasitic load to the secondary device;

and

wherein said communication unit includes a switch for selectively switching said feedback resistor across said secondary coil.

A secondary device as claimed in claim 1, wherein said communication unit is operable to communicate said information by imposing a load in a first configuration on the primary unit at a first time and a second configuration, different from said first configuration, at a second time, said first and second configurations being set in dependence upon said parasitic load.

8. A secondary device as claimed in claim 7, wherein one of said first and second configurations of said load is zero.

9. A portable electrical or electronic device comprising:

a load which at least at times requires power from said primary unit; and

a secondary device comprising;

a secondary coil adapted to couple with said field generated by said primary unit when the secondary device is in proximity to the primary unit so that power can be received inductively by the secondary device from the primary unit without direct electrical conductive contacts therebetween;

a load connection unit, connected to said secondary coil and adapted to be connected when the secondary device is in use to a load requiring power from the primary unit, for supplying such inductively-received power to the load; and

a communication unit operable to communicate to the primary unit information relating to a parasitic load imposed on the primary unit by the secondary device;

wherein said load connection unit of said secondary device is connected to said load for supplying such inductively-received power to the load at said times.

10. A portable electrical or electronic device as claimed in claim 9, wherein said communication unit is operable to communicate said information, wherein said information contains data of said parasitic load.

11. A portable electrical or electronic device as claimed in claim 10, wherein said communication unit communicates said information by modulating a communication load.

12. A portable electrical or electronic device as claimed in claim 9, wherein said communication unit is operable to communicate said information by varying a load on said primary unit from which said primary unit can derive the parasitic load imposed on the primary unit by the secondary device.

13. A portable electrical or electronic device as claimed in claim 12, wherein said load has a value selected to communicate a friendly parasitic load of the secondary device.

14. A portable electrical or electronic device as claimed in claim 12, wherein said load is a resistor having a resistance value selected to communicate a friendly parasitic load of the secondary device.

15. A portable electrical or electronic device as claimed in claim 12, wherein said load is a feedback resistor having a resistance value selected to communicate a friendly parasitic load of the secondary device;

and

wherein said communication unit includes a switch for selectively switching said feedback resistor across said secondary coil.

A portable electrical or electronic device as claimed in claim 9, wherein said communication unit is operable to communicate said information by imposing a load in a first configuration on the primary unit at a first time and a second configuration, different from said first configuration, at a second time, said first and second configurations being set in dependence upon said parasitic load.

17. A portable electrical or electronic device as claimed in claim 16, wherein one of said first and second configurations of said load is zero.

18. A method of controlling inductive power transfer in an inductive power transfer system comprising a primary unit, having a primary coil to which electrical drive signals are applied to generate an electromagnetic field, and also comprising at least one secondary device, separable from the primary unit and having friendly parasitics and a secondary coil adapted to couple with said field when the secondary device is in proximity to the primary unit so that power can be transferred inductively from the primary unit to the secondary device without direct electrical conductive contacts therebetween, which method comprises:

receiving in the primary unit from the secondary device information indicative of the friendly parasitics of the secondary device;

detecting in the primary unit whether a substantial parasitic load is present in proximity to the primary unit, said detecting taking into consideration the information indicative of the friendly parasitics received in the primary unit; and

restricting or stopping inductive power transfer from the primary unit in dependence upon said detecting step.

19. The method of claim 18 further comprising the step of varying a load on the primary unit to communicate the secondary device information.

20. The method of claim 19 wherein said varying includes applying a load across the secondary coil.

21. The method of claim 20 wherein said receiving includes measuring a load imposed on the primary unit.

22. The method of claim 21 wherein the measuring of said measuring step is taken during a ring-down period.

23. The method of claim 19 further including the step of varying the load imposed on the primary unit depending on one or more conditions of the primary unit.

24. The method of claim 19 wherein the load is a dummy load.
