Abstract

In a medical device having a display element, a method of providing an intuitive graphical display of patient data begins by obtaining measurement data corresponding to values of a physiological characteristic measured over a period of time. The method continues by rendering a graphical representation of a portion of the measurement data on the display element, resulting in a display of the values of the physiological characteristic measured during a first interval of the period of time. Thereafter, the method processes a user-initiated display panning command and, in response to the user-initiated display panning command, dynamically pans the graphical representation while updating the portion of the measurement data. Thereafter, the method renders a display of the values of the physiological characteristic measured during a second interval of the period of time.

Claims

1. A method for presenting information on a display element of a portable medical device, the method comprising:

rendering, on the display element, a first graphical representation of information associated with operation of the portable medical device;

obtaining, at the portable medical device, a user-initiated display panning command; and

rendering, on the display element, a second graphical representation of the information;

wherein

at least a portion of the second graphical representation is not included in the first graphical representation; and

rendering of the second graphical representation is performed in response to the user-initiated display panning command.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein rendering the second graphical representation comprises panning a portion of the first graphical representation across the display element.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein rendering the second graphical representation comprises removing a portion of the first graphical representation from the display element.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein:

the first graphical representation comprises physiological data for a patient that is rendered on the display element using fixed display scaling; and

the second graphical representation comprises physiological data for the patient that is rendered on the display element using the fixed display scaling.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein:

the information is indicative of a physiological characteristic of a patient measured during a period of time;

the first graphical representation conveys values of the physiological characteristic measured during a first interval of the period of time; and

the second graphical representation conveys values of the physiological characteristic measured during a second interval of the period of time.

6. The method of claim 5, wherein the first interval and the second interval overlap.

7. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

detecting manipulation of a human-machine interface element of the portable medical device; and

generating the user-initiated display panning command in response to the detecting step.

8. The method of claim 7, wherein the detecting step detects physical actuation of a button on the portable medical device.

9. The method of claim 7, wherein the detecting step detects physical manipulation of a touch screen on the portable medical device.

10. In a medical device having a display element, a method of providing an intuitive graphical display of patient data, the method comprising:

obtaining measurement data corresponding to values of a physiological characteristic measured over a period of time;

rendering a graphical representation of a portion of the measurement data on the display element, resulting in a display of the values of the physiological characteristic measured during a first interval of the period of time;

thereafter, processing a user-initiated display panning command;

in response to the user-initiated display panning command, dynamically panning the graphical representation while updating the portion of the measurement data; and

thereafter, rendering a display of the values of the physiological characteristic measured during a second interval of the period of time.

11. The method of claim 10, wherein:

the step of rendering the graphical representation results in a display of the values in accordance with a designated display scaling;

the step of dynamically panning is performed while preserving the designated display scaling; and

the step of rendering the display is performed while preserving the designated display scaling.

12. The method of claim 10, further comprising:

detecting manipulation of a human-machine interface element of the medical device; and

generating the user-initiated display panning command in response to the detecting step.

13. The method of claim 12, wherein:

the display element comprises a touch screen; and

the detecting step detects physical manipulation of the touch screen.

14. The method of claim 10, wherein:

the medical device is an insulin infusion pump;

the step of obtaining measurement data comprises obtaining glucose data for a user of the insulin infusion pump; and

the step of rendering the graphical representation results in the display of a graph of glucose level versus time for the user.

15. The method of claim 10, wherein the step of dynamically panning results in panning along a time axis for the values of the physiological characteristic.

16. A medical device comprising:

at least one memory element configured to store physiological characteristic data corresponding to values of a physiological characteristic for a patient;

a graphics engine configured to generate image rendering display commands associated with the physiological characteristic data;

a display element coupled to the graphics engine, the display element configured to receive the image rendering display commands and, in response thereto, render visual representations of the physiological characteristic data; and

a human-machine interface element operatively coupled to the graphics engine, and configured to generate display shifting commands in response to user interaction therewith;

wherein

the display element renders a visual representation of the physiological characteristic data such that it corresponds to a first time interval; and

in response to a display shifting command generated by the human-machine interface element, the display element updates the visual representation of the physiological characteristic data such that it corresponds to a second time interval.

17. The medical device of claim 16, wherein:

the display element renders the visual representation of the physiological characteristic data using a fixed display scale; and

the fixed display scale is maintained while the display element updates the visual representation of the physiological characteristic data.

18. The medical device of claim 16, wherein:

the medical device comprises a therapy delivery device that is worn or carried by the patient; and

the physiological characteristic is influenced by the therapy delivered by the therapy delivery device.

19. The medical device of claim 18, wherein:

the therapy delivery device is an insulin infusion pump;

the physiological characteristic is a glucose level; and

the visual representation of the physiological characteristic comprises a graph of glucose level versus time for the patient.

20. The medical device of claim 16, wherein:

the medical device comprises a controller configured to control delivery of therapy to the patient via a therapy delivery device that is worn or carried by the patient; and

the physiological characteristic is influenced by the therapy delivered by the therapy delivery device.

21. The medical device of claim 16, wherein the display element updates the visual representation of the physiological characteristic data by panning.

22. The medical device of claim 16, wherein the human-machine interface element comprises a component selected from the group consisting of:

a button;

a switch;

a touchpad;

a touch screen;

a keypad;

a keyboard;

a joystick;

a trackball;

a motion sensor;

a lever;

a slider bar; and

a voice command microphone.

23. The medical device of claim 16, wherein:

the display element is realized as a touch screen; and

the human-machine interface element is incorporated into the touch screen.
