Abstract

An volume filling device for treatment of obesity is placed outside the stomach wall of the patient to reduce the inner volume of the stomach, thereby affecting the patient'"'"'s appetite. By providing the volume filling device outside the stomach wall, contact with stomach acids is avoided, thereby increasing the life of the device. Furthermore including a stretching device to stretch a portion of the stomach wall to further affecting the patient'"'"'s appetite.

Claims

1. An apparatus for treating obesity of an obese patient having a stomach with a food cavity, the apparatus comprising:

an inflatable volume filling device adapted to be at least substantially invaginated by a stomach wall portion of the patient with the outer surface of the volume filling device resting against the stomach wall, such that the volume of the food cavity is reduced in size by a volume substantially exceeding the volume of the volume filling device, the volume filling device having a maximum circumference of at least 30 millimeters, and

an inflatable adjustable stretching device adapted to be at least substantially invaginated by a stomach wall portion of the patient with the outer surface of the stretching device resting against the stomach fundus wall and adapted to stretch a portion of stomach fundus wall, and

a fluid connection device interconnecting the volume filling device and the stretching device.

2. The apparatus according to claim 1, wherein the volume filling device is substantially larger than the stretching device.

3. The apparatus according to claim 1, wherein the fluid connection device comprises a first fluid tube interconnected between the volume filling device and the stretching device.

4. The apparatus according to claim 1, comprising a pump in the first fluid tube.

5. The apparatus according to claim 3, comprising a second fluid tube interconnected between the volume filling device and the stretching device.

6. The apparatus according to claim 5, wherein the second fluid tube is narrower than the first fluid tube.

The apparatus according to claim 1, wherein the second fluid tube is so dimensioned, that the pressures in the volume filling device and the stretching device will return to equilibrium after a predetermined time after fluid has been injected into the stretching device to create the feeling of satiety.

8. The apparatus according to claim 7, wherein the predetermined time is between 1 and 5 hours.

9. The apparatus according to claim 8, wherein the predetermined time is between 2 and 4 hours.

10. The apparatus according to claim 9, wherein the predetermined time is about 3 hours.

11. The apparatus according to claim 3, comprising a non-return valve in the first fluid tube.

12. The apparatus according to claim 9, wherein the stretching device in invaginated in the stomach fundus wall

13. The apparatus according to claim 1, comprising an injection port.

14. The apparatus according to claim 13, wherein the injection port is connected to the volume filling device.

15. The apparatus according to claim 13, wherein the injection port is connected to the stretching device.

16. The apparatus according to claim 1, comprising an adjustment reservoir, preferably provided subcutaneously below the patient'"'"'s skin.

17. The apparatus according to claim 1, wherein the volume filling device comprises an inflatable device expandable to an expanded state.

18. The apparatus according to claim 17, wherein the inflatable device has an inlet port for a fluid or a gel and is adapted to be connected to a gastroscopic instrument.

19. The apparatus according to claim 18, wherein the inlet port comprises a fluid connection adapted to interconnect the inflatable device and the gastroscopic instrument.

20. The apparatus according to claim 1, wherein the volume filling device has an elongated shape.
