Abstract

An apparatus (10) for measurement of power in an electric power transmission line (20) is disclosed. The apparatus (10) comprises a magnetic field sensor (30) for measuring the magnetic field (35) at the electric power transmission line (20) and transmitting magnetic field data (37) to a processor (40). The magnetic field sensor (30) is arranged proximate to but at a distance from the electric power transmission line (20). The apparatus (10) also has a voltage sensor (50) arranged distally from the magnetic field sensor (30) for transmitting voltage waveform data (55) to the processor (40) and a transfer function calculator (60) for calculating the relationship between the transmitted voltage waveform data at the voltage sensor (50) and transmission line voltage waveform data (55). A method for measurement of power in an electric power transmission line (20) is also disclosed and comprises measuring the magnetic field (35) about the electric power transmission line (20) proximate to but at a distance from the electric power transmission line (20), measuring a distal voltage waveform (55) distally from the electric power transmission line (20), calculating a transmission line voltage waveform data from the distal voltage waveform (55) and calculating the power in the electric power transmission line (20) from the transmission line voltage waveform data and the magnetic field data (37).

Claims

1. An apparatus for measurement of power in an electric power transmission line comprising:

a first electromagnetic sensor for measuring the electromagnetic field at the electric power transmission line and transmitting electromagnetic data to a processor, wherein the first electromagnetic sensor is arranged proximate to but at a distance from the electric power transmission line;

a second electromagnetic sensor arranged distally from the first electromagnetic sensor for transmitting second electromagnetic data to the processor;

a clock; and

a transfer function calculator for calculating the relationship between the first electromagnetic data and the second electromagnetic data.

2. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the first electromagnetic sensor is a magnetic filed sensor.

3. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the second electromagnetic sensor is a voltage sensor.

4. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the transfer function calculator comprises a look-up table.

5. The apparatus of claim 4, wherein the look-up table stores constant values.

6. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the transfer function calculator calculates the relationship by differences in periods.

7. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the transfer function calculator comprises an algorithm.

8. An apparatus for measurement of power in an electric power transmission line comprising:

a field sensor for measuring the electromagnetic field at the electric power transmission line, wherein the field sensor is arranged proximate to but at a distance from the electric power transmission line; and

a processor for receiving data from the field sensor and analysing the voltage waveform and/or the current waveform of the electric power transmission line to determine the power in the electric power transmission line.

9. The apparatus of claim 8, wherein the field sensor can measure one of an electric field component or a magnetic field component of the electromagnetic field.

10. A processor for calculating the power in an electric power transmission line comprising:

a first analysis unit for accepting first electromagnetic data relating to an electromagnetic field of the electric power transmission line at a first position;

second analysis unit for accepting second electromagnetic data measured at a second position, the second position being distal from the first position; and

a transfer function calculator for calculating the relationship between the first electromagnetic data and the second electromagnetic data.

11. A method for measurement of power in an electric power transmission line comprising:

measuring an electromagnetic field about the electric power transmission line proximate to but at a distance from the electric power transmission line;

measuring a distal electromagnetic waveform distally from the electric power transmission line;

calculating a transmission line electromagnetic waveform data from the distal electromagnetic waveform; and

calculating the power in the electric power transmission line from the transmission line electromagnetic waveform data and the electromagnetic field data.

12. A method for measurement of power in an electric power transmission line comprising:

a measuring the electromagnetic field about the electric power transmission line proximate to but at a distance from the electric power transmission line; and

calculating the voltage waveform and/or current waveform at the electric power transmission line from the measured electromagnetic field; and

analysing the current waveform to determine the power in the electric power transmission line.

13. A method for establishing a transfer function over an electric power transmission line between a first point and a second point

measuring changes in one of a magnetic field or a voltage against time at a first point;

measuring changes in another one of a voltage or magnetic field against time at the second point;

using the measured magnetic field changes and the measured voltage changes to establish the transfer function between the first point and the second point.

14. The method of claim 13, wherein the measured magnetic field changes are made during a time period at which load on the electric power transmission line is at the time period in which active power is substantially 100%.

15. The method of claim 13 further comprising

storing digital values representing the transfer function.

16. The method of claim 13, further comprising

measuring the distance between the first point and the second point.

19. The method of claim 15, further comprising accessing a transfer function calculator for calculating the transmission voltage waveform.

17. A method for monitoring an electric power transmission network having a plurality of electric power transmission lines comprising:

measuring the electromagnetic field proximate to but at a distance from the electric power transmission line at least one of the plurality of electric power transmission lines;

transmitting data relating to the measured electromagnetic field to a processor; and

comparing the data with historic data for the electric power transmission network.

18. The method of claim 17, further comprising

measuring a distal electromagnetic waveform at a location distal from the at least one of the plurality of electric power transmission lines;

and

calculating from the distal electromagnetic waveform a transmission voltage waveform at the at least one of the plurality of electric power transmission lines.

20. The method of claim 17, further comprising

notifying irregularities in the electric power transmission network.

21. The method of claim 17, further comprising

predicting risks of irregularities in the electric power transmission network.

22. The method of claim 17, wherein transmitting data comprises transmitting only certain data elements and interpolating intermediate values of the data elements.

23. An apparatus for monitoring an electric power transmission network having a plurality of electric power transmission lines comprising:

a plurality of first electromagnetic sensors for measuring the electromagnetic field of at least one of the plurality of electric power transmission lines and transmitting first electromagnetic data to a processor, wherein the plurality of electromagnetic field sensors are arranged proximate to but at a distance from the at least one of the plurality of electric power transmission lines;

a second electromagnetic sensor arranged distally from at least one of the plurality of first electromagnetic sensors for transmitting second electromagnetic data to the processor;

a transfer function calculator for calculating the relationship between the first electromagnetic data and the second electromagnetic data;

a clock; and

a comparator for comparing the first electromagnetic data and the second electromagnetic data with historic data for the electric power transmission network.

24. The apparatus of claim 23, wherein the historic data is at least one of weather data, network configuration data, time-related data, energy price and cultured aspects.

25. The apparatus of claim 23 further comprising a notification device for notifying irregularities in the electric power transmission network.

26. The apparatus of claim 23 further comprising a predictor for using at least part of the historic data and at least some of the electromagnetic field data for predicting irregularities in the electric power transmission network.
