Abstract

Various embodiments are described for a trained data transmission for communication systems.

Claims

1. A method of transmitting information between first and second wireless stations, the method comprising:

performing a training phase including an exchange of medium reservation messages between the first and second stations to reserve a medium and to select at least one data transmission parameter, at least one of the medium reservation messages including a duration field indicating a duration of the medium reservation;

performing a first data phase including sending data from the first station to the second station according to the at least one data transmission parameter selected during the training phase;

performing a second data phase without first repeating the training phase, the second data phase comprising transmitting data from the first station to a second station according to the at least one data transmission parameter.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the training phase comprises the second station indicating the at least one data transmission parameter to the first station.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein indicating the at least one transmission parameter comprises indicating a modulation scheme.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein indicating the at least one transmission parameter comprises indicating a forward error correction (FEC) coding rate.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein the at least one data transmission parameter corresponds to a plurality of antennas.

6. The method of claim 4, wherein the plurality of antennas are included in the second wireless station.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein the first and second wireless stations are included in an IEEE 802.11 wireless network.

8. The method of claim 7, wherein the second wireless station is an access point (AP).

9. An apparatus, comprising a processor and a wireless transceiver, the apparatus adapted to:

perform a training phase including an exchange of medium reservation messages between the first and second stations to reserve a medium and to select at least one data transmission parameter, at least one of the medium reservation messages including a duration field indicating a duration of the medium reservation;

perform a first data phase including sending data from the first station to the second station according to the at least one data transmission parameter selected during the training phase;

perform a second data phase without first repeating the training phase, the second data phase comprising transmitting data from the first station to a second station according to the at least one data transmission parameter.

10. The apparatus of claim 9, wherein the training phase comprises the second station indicating the at least one data transmission parameter to the first station.

11. The apparatus of claim 9, wherein indicating the at least one transmission parameter comprises indicating a modulation scheme.

12. The apparatus of claim 9, wherein indicating the at least one transmission parameter comprises indicating a forward error correction (FEC) coding rate.

13. The apparatus of claim 9, wherein the at least one data transmission parameter corresponds to a plurality of antennas.

14. The apparatus of claim 13, wherein the plurality of antennas are included in the second wireless station.

15. The apparatus of claim 9, wherein the first and second wireless stations are included in an IEEE 802.11 wireless network.

16. The apparatus of claim 15, wherein the second wireless station is an access point (AP).

17. An apparatus, comprising a processor and a wireless transceiver, the apparatus adapted to:

select at least one data transmission parameter;

transmit a protection portion from a first station to a second station, the protection portion including a duration field indicating a duration of a reserved medium; and

transmit data from the first station to the second station according to the at least one selected transmission parameter, wherein the selected transmission parameter is selected on a per-antenna basis, where multiple antennas are used at said the second station.

18. The apparatus of claim 17, the at least one data transmission parameter selected according to an exchange of messages in a training phase, the exchange of messages comprising:

receiving a medium reservation request message at the second station to initiate

training and to request a medium reservation, said medium reservation request message includes training information comprising a training sequence; and

sending a medium reservation reply message from the second station granting a medium reservation request and providing training feedback describing at least one measured transmission condition.

19. The apparatus of claim 17, wherein the duration field comprises at least one of:

a legacy packet that includes a duration field, or a portion of a legacy packet that includes a duration field.

20. The apparatus of claim 17, wherein the selecting at least one data transmission parameter comprises selecting a data transmission parameter from the group including

a data rate;

a modulation scheme;

a coding rate;

use or type of interleaving; and

transmission power.
