Abstract

A method apparatus and system for implementing a redundant cooling system is disclosed. The system and method include apparatus for providing a plurality of variable refrigerant flow air cooling units, wherein the number of air cooling units is at least one more than required to meet a selected maximum cooling load when operating the air cooling units at up to a maximum cooling capacity; coupling the plurality of variable refrigerant flow air cooling units in thermal communication with the air in a conditioned space; determining a select optimum operating condition for each of the plurality of variable refrigerant flow air cooling units which will result in about a lowest overall energy consumption for the redundant cooling system, while maintaining an average temperature of the air in the conditioned space at a required setpoint; and operating said plurality of air cooling units at about the select optimum operating conditions for each of the air cooling units.

Claims

1. A method of implementing a redundant cooling system comprising:

providing a plurality of variable refrigerant flow air cooling units, wherein the number of air cooling units is at least one more than required to meet a selected maximum cooling load when operating the air cooling units at up to a maximum cooling capacity;

coupling the plurality of variable refrigerant flow air cooling units in thermal communication with the air in a conditioned space;

determining a select optimum operating condition for each of the plurality of variable refrigerant flow air cooling units which will result in about a lowest overall energy consumption for the redundant cooling system, while maintaining an average temperature of the air in the conditioned space at a required setpoint; and

operating said plurality of air cooling units at about the select optimum operating conditions for each of the air cooling units.

The method of claim 1 wherein the variable refrigerant flow air cooling units comprise a variable speed compressor and further comprising operating the variable speed compressors of each of the plurality of refrigerant flow air cooling units at approximately the same speed when the cooling output of each cooling unit is above that at which a maximum energy efficiency ratio of the unit occurs.

3. The method of claim 2 further comprising at least one of:

turning off the variable speed compressors of one or more of the plurality of air cooling units when the average cooling output of all of the plurality of air cooling units is below that at which the maximum energy efficiency ratio of the air cooling unit occurs; and

operating each of the plurality of air cooling units at about the point at which the maximum energy efficiency ratio of the air cooling unit occurs.

4. The method of claim 3 whereby each of the variable refrigerant flow air cooling units is associated with a controller which provides for the cooling output of the cooling unit to be varied to control the temperature of the conditioned space about equal to that of the temperature setpoint.

5. The method of claim 4 further comprising:

controlling the length of time that the compressor of each of the plurality of air cooling units is on; and

controlling the length of time that the compressor of each of the plurality of air cooling units is off, such that wear for the compressor of each of the air cooling units is approximately equalized over time.

The method of claim 4 further comprising communicating information to determine an optimum point of operation for each cooling unit between the controller associated with each variable refrigerant flow air cooling unit whereby the controller associated with each unit provides and receives information which will result in about the lowest overall energy consumption for the redundant cooling system and operates each cooling unit at about the determined optimum operating point.

The method of claim 6 whereby the controller in each variable refrigerant flow air cooling unit incorporates a communication means, and whereby the controller in each unit provides information about the cooling unit which allows at least one of its operating or fault status to be determined and whereby the cooling unit setpoints can be adjusted.

8. The method of claim 7 whereby the communication means is a digital communication bus.

9. The method of claim 1 whereby each variable refrigerant flow air cooling unit incorporates a variable speed drive and associated control means, the method further comprising adjusting the speed of an indoor fan to control the latent cooling capacity of the cooling unit.

10. The method of claim 1 further comprising measuring the humidity of the conditioned space and adjusting the latent cooling capacity of the cooling units to control the humidity of the conditioned space.

11. The method of claim 1 further comprising adjusting the speed of an indoor fan associated with one or more of the plurality of variable refrigerant flow air cooling units to approximately minimize the energy consumption of the cooling unit at a selected cooling output.

12. The method of claim 1 further comprising adjusting the speed of an outdoor fan associated with one or more of the plurality of variable refrigerant flow air cooling units to approximately minimize the energy consumption of the cooling unit at a selected cooling output.

13. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

monitoring the status of the individual cooling units with a communications means and the status information is used as one of the inputs for determining fault conditions; and

notifying a user or service personnel of a fault condition in the redundant cooling system.

The method of claim 1 further comprising increasing the Sensible Heat Ratio of the system by operating one or more selected units of the plurality of variable refrigerant flow air cooling units with an indoor airflow proportionally higher for a selected cooling output than a maximum indoor airflow at a maximum cooling output.

15. The method of claim 1 further comprising increasing the MTBF of the plurality of variable refrigerant flow air cooling units by minimizing the total losses in the system and by dividing the minimized losses evenly among all cooling units.

16. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

powering each cooling unit from a primary power supply when the primary power supply meets a specified condition; and

powering each cooling unit from an auxiliary uninterruptible power supply when the primary power supply exceeds the specified condition.

The method of claim 16 whereby the output of the uninterruptible power supply is DC and a plurality of power converters are provided, the method further comprising converting the DC output of the uninterruptible power supply to AC, of a suitable amplitude and frequency, for powering the air cooling units.

18. The method of claim 1 further comprising operating each air cooling unit from a DC power supply.

19. The method of claim 18 further comprising:

providing power to the air cooling units from a plurality of power converter units which convert the voltage level of the DC uninterruptible power supply to a suitable DC voltage for connection to the air cooling units; and

providing galvanic isolation between the AC power supply and the output of the DC uninterruptible power supply.

20. A cooling system comprising:

a plurality of air cooling units

one or more control units in communication with said plurality of air-cooling units for controlling and operating the plurality of air-cooling units;

an interface providing for communication among and sharing of information between the plurality of air cooling units and between the one or more control units and the plurality of air-cooling units wherein at least one control unit is configured for controlling the air cooling units to provide for a suitable temperature of the environment; and

at least one humidity controller configured for controlling the air cooling units to provide for a suitable humidity of the environment.
