Abstract

System(s) and method(s) are provided to configure receivers in a mobile device to mitigate receiver overload and fully or nearly-fully utilize available spectrum for communication. Configuration is dictated at least in part by at least one of radio link quality or available receiver specifications, and it can be effected by the mobile device or a base station that serves the mobile device. Receiver configuration includes various spectrally asymmetric receivers that tune respective disparate portions of the available spectrum to maximize utilization thereof in the spectral regions prone to overload conditions. In severe overload conditions, a single receiver can be configured to operate in a frequency band spectrally adjacent to a sub-band that leads to overload conditions when employed for telecommunication. To improve performance, the single receiver configuration can be supplemented with at least one of transmit diversity operation, asymmetric multicarrier spreading, or downlink power boost of asymmetrical multicarrier spreading.

Claims

1. A method, comprising:

provisioning a set of receivers in a device that communicates wirelessly, wherein each receiver includes a filter that tunes a portion of the electromagnetic (EM) radiation spectrum;

receiving channel state information (CSI) from at least one of the provisioned receivers; and

configuring radio resources based at least in part on at least one of the collected CSI or tuning capability of one or more receivers in the set of provisioned receivers.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein provisioning the set of receivers in the device that communicates wirelessly includes:

provisioning a first receiver with a filter that tunes a first portion of the EM radiation spectrum; and

provisioning a second receiver with a filter that tunes a second portion of the EM radiation spectrum.

The method of claim 2, wheiren the first portion of the EM radiation spectrum is a wide band that includes a sub-band adjacent to a frequency block utilized for high-power broadcasting of wireless signal, and the second portion of the EM radiation spectrum is narrow band that spectrally overlaps the wide band.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein receiving channel state information (CSI) from at least one of the provisioned receivers includes probing overload conditions on the at least one of the provisioned receivers.

5. The method of claim 4, wherein probing overload conditions on the at least one of the provisioned receivers includes exploiting overload criteria that includes a set of CSI thresholds that distinguish among overload condition and non-overload conditions.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein configuring radio resources based at least in part on at least one of the collected CSI or tuning capability of one or more receivers in the set of provisioned receivers includes:

when a received channel quality indicator (CQI) from a provisioned receiver in the device is below a first threshold and above a second threshold, with the second threshold lower than the first threshold, scheduling multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communication; and

when the CQI is below the second threshold, switching telecommunication mode to multiple-input single-output (MISO).

The method of claim 6, wherein switching telecommunication mode to multiple-input single-output (MISO) includes enhancing MISO mode through at least one of effecting transmit diversity, exploiting asymmetric multicarrier spreading, or implementing power boost of downlink communication through an ancillary band in asymmetric multicarrier spreading.

The method of claim 6, wherein configuring radio resources based at least in part on at least one of the collected CSI or tuning capability of one or more receivers in the set of provisioned receivers further includes restoring communication in non-overload condition when the received CQI is above the first threshold and a current operation is effected in overload condition.

9. An apparatus for telecommunication, the apparatus comprising:

a communication platform that receives channel state information (CSI) from a mobile device; and

a scheduler component that configures telecommunication mode based at least in part on at least one of the received CSI or specifications for a set of receivers available in the mobile device.

10. The apparatus of claim 9, wherein the scheduler component provisions a configuration of the set of receivers available in the mobile device.

11. The apparatus of claim 9, to configure telecommunication mode based at least in part on at least one of the received CSI or specifications for a set of receivers available in the mobile device, the scheduler component compares the received CSI with overload criteria that includes a set of channel quality thresholds that determines overload conditions.

12. The apparatus of claim 11, when the received CSI correspond to overload conditions, the scheduler component establishes multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communication mode with allocated radio resources consistent with the received CSI.

13. The apparatus of claim 12, when the received CSI corresponds to severe overload conditions, the scheduler component switches telecommunication mode to multiple-input single-output (MISO) mode.

The apparatus of claim 13, wherein the scheduler component enhances the MISO mode through at least one of exploitation of transmit diversity, utilization of asymmetric multicarrier spreading, or implementation of power boost of downlink communication through an ancillary band in asymmetric multicarrier spreading.

15. A method for configuring a device, comprising:

determining radio link conditions for each wireless receiver in a set of provisioned wireless receivers in the device; and

configuring operation of one or more of the wireless receivers in the set of provisioned wireless receivers based at least in part on at least one of the determined radio link conditions or specifications of the one or more receivers.

16. The method of claim 15, further comprising conveying the determined radio link conditions for each wireless receiver in the set of provisioned wireless receivers in the device.

17. The method of claim 15, wherein the each wireless receiver in the set of provisioned wireless receivers includes a filter that tunes a specific portion of the EM radiation spectrum and has a finite gain roll-off coefficient.

18. The method of claim 15, wherein configuring operation of one or more of the wireless receivers in the set of provisioned wireless receivers includes:

activating a first wireless receiver with a filter that tunes a first portion of the EM radiation spectrum and rolls off in a frequency block utilized for high-power broadcasting; and

activating a second receiver with a filter that tunes a second portion of the EM radiation spectrum that partially overlaps with the first portion of the EM radiation spectrum.

19. The method of claim 15, further comprising:

securing a radio resource (RR) grant;

receiving an indication of a telecommunication mode of operation; and

when the RR grant is compatible with a current configured operation of the one or more wireless receivers in the set of provisioned wireless receivers, communicating in accordance at least in part with at least one of the received RR or the indicated mode of operation, the current configured operation of the one or more wireless receivers based at least in part on overload conditions as dictated by the determined radio link conditions and overload criteria.

20. The method of claim 19, wherein the secured RR grant is based at least in part on the determined radio link conditions.

The method of claim 19, wherein the telecommunication mode of operation is at least one of (i) a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communication mode allocated the RR grant when overload conditions are moderate, or (ii) a multiple-input single-output (MISO) mode when overload conditions are severe.

22. The method of claim 21, wherein the MISO mode is enhanced through at least one of exploitation of transmit diversity, utilization of asymmetric multicarrier spreading, or implementation of power boost of downlink communication through an ancillary band in asymmetric multicarrier spreading.

23. The method of claim 15, further comprising:

for an launched application, configuring reception of at least one of application traffic or signaling through a set of receivers; and

configuring reception of data and control disparate from at least one of the application traffic or signaling via at least one receiver distinct from the set of receivers.

24. A device that communicates wirelessly, the device comprising:

a communication platform that comprises a plurality of transceivers, each of the transceivers includes a receiver with a filter that tunes a specific portion of the electromagnetic radiation spectrum;

a component that generates channel station information (CSI) for each of the receivers in the plurality of transceivers; and

a provisioning component that activates or deactivates a receiver within a set of provisioned receivers in the communication platform based at least in part on generated CSI and gain specifications of a filter within the receiver.

25. The device of claim 24, wherein the component that generates CSI determines a level of receiver overload based at least in part on overload criteria that includes a set of configurable channel quality thresholds.

26. The device of claim 24, wherein the provisioning component further activates or deactivates a receiver within the set of receivers of provisioned receivers in the communication platform based at least in part on a received receiver configuration.

27. The device of claim 24, for no-overload or low-overload conditions, the provisioning component activates a first and second receivers, the first receiver includes a filter that tunes a first portion of the EM radiation spectrum and rolls off in a frequency block utilized for high-power broadcasting, and the second receiver includes a filter that tunes a second portion of the EM radiation spectrum that partially overlaps with the first portion of the EM radiation spectrum.

28. The device of claim 24, for no-overload or load-overload conditions, the provisioning component activates a receiver that includes a filter that tunes one or more EM radiation frequency sub-bands utilized to broadcast wireless signal associated with a specific service and one or more paired sub-bands available for duplex wireless communication.
