Abstract

A hardware, firmware, and/or software facility (“facility”) for providing information relevant to rendered documents is described. In some embodiments, the facility identifies multiple versions of an electronic document corresponding to a rendered document captured by a capture device. The facility may then provide a person utilizing the capture device with various ways to interact with one or more versions of the electronic document. In some embodiments, the facility determines that use of a rendered document is restricted, such as by copyright, to some degree. The facility may then offer the person the option to obtain unrestricted use of the rendered document. If the person accepts, the person obtains the right to store captures of the rendered document. If the person declines, the facility automatically discards captures of the rendered document. In some embodiments, the facility may automatically purchase rights to restricted-use rendered documents based upon the person'"'"'s pre-defined criteria.

Claims

1. A method of identifying multiple versions of an electronic document that is performed by one or more computing devices, each computing device including a processor and a memory, the method comprising:

receiving text included in a capture of a portion of a rendered document, the capture created by a capture component of a capture device;

identifying an electronic document that includes the text;

identifying, by the one or more computing devices, multiple versions of the identified electronic document, wherein the multiple versions of the electronic document include a first version that corresponds to the rendered document and a second version different from the first version; and

providing an indication of the multiple versions of the electronic document to the capture device.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein the first version is created at a first time and the second version of the electronic document is created at a second time later than the first time, and wherein the second version of the electronic document is derived directly or indirectly from the first version of the electronic document.

3. The method of claim 1 wherein each of the first and second versions is directly or indirectly derived from a third version different from each of the first and second versions.

4. The method of claim 1 wherein the first version corresponds to a first publication of the electronic document and the second version corresponds to a second publication of the electronic document different from the first publication.

5. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

identifying one or more differences between the first version and the second version;

providing an indication of the one or more differences to the capture device; and

displaying the one or more differences by a display component of the capture device.

6. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

receiving a request to print a portion of at least one of the first and second versions; and

causing the portion of at least one of the first and second versions to be printed in accordance with the request.

7. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

identifying a location in the second version corresponding to a location of the captured portion in the rendered document;

displaying the captured portion of the rendered document by a display component of the capture device; and

simultaneously with displaying the captured portion of the rendered document, displaying a portion of the second version at the identified location by the display component of the capture device.

8. The method of claim 7, further comprising:

receiving a second capture of a second portion of the rendered document, the second capture created by the capture component of the capture device;

identifying a second location in the second version corresponding to a location of the second captured portion in the rendered document;

displaying the second captured portion of the rendered document by the display component of the capture device; and

simultaneously with displaying the second captured portion of the rendered document, displaying a second portion of the second version at the identified second location by the display component of the capture device.

9. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

receiving a request for a notification of a modification to a portion of at least one of the first and second versions;

identifying a change to the portion of at least one of the first and second versions; and

providing a notification of the change to the portion of at least one of the first and second versions to the capture device.

20. The computer-readable storage medium of claim 1 wherein the method further comprises:

when the consideration exceeds the specified threshold,

displaying by a display component of the capture device an offer to acquire a use of the rendered document excluded by the restrictions;

determining when the person utilizing the capture device accepts the offer;

when the person accepts the offer, then persistently storing the capture; and

when the person does not accept the offer, then deleting the temporarily stored capture.

21. The computer-readable storage medium of claim 1 wherein the consideration is a first financial value and the specified threshold is a second financial value.

22. The computer-readable storage medium of claim 1 wherein the consideration includes a request for one or more items of information regarding the person and the specified threshold includes an authorization of the person to disclose the one or more items of information regarding the person.

10. A computer-readable storage medium whose contents, if executed by a computing device having a processor and a memory, cause the computing device to perform a method of providing a notification of a modification to an electronic document, the method comprising:

receiving a request for a notification of a modification to a portion of an electronic document, the electronic document corresponding to a rendered document, wherein the correspondence between the electronic document and the rendered document is determined based upon text included in a capture of a portion of the rendered document, the capture created by a capture component of a capture device;

identifying one or more modifications to the portion of the electronic document; and

providing a notification of the one or more modifications to the portion of the electronic document to the capture device.

11. The computer-readable storage medium of claim 10 wherein the electronic document is a first version, wherein identifying one or more modifications to the portion of the electronic document includes identifying a creation of a second version, and wherein providing a notification of the one or more modifications to the portion of the electronic document to the capture device includes providing a notification of the creation of the second version to the capture device.

12. The computer-readable storage medium of claim 10, further comprising:

receiving a request to obtain the one or more modifications to the portion of the electronic document; and

providing the one or more modifications to the capture device.

13. A method of interacting with a rendered document protected by copyright that is performed by one or more computing devices, each computing device including a processor and a memory, the method comprising:

receiving a capture of a portion of a rendered document, the capture created by a capture component of a capture device;

based upon the capture, determining that the rendered document is protected by copyright;

identifying, by the one or more computing devices, a set of one or more actions that are not prohibited by the copyright, wherein the identified actions include an action for obtaining a license to the rendered document; and

presenting by a display component of the capture device one or more user-selectable display elements, wherein the presented one or more user-selectable display elements are each associated with one of the identified actions.

14. The method of claim 13, further comprising:

identifying a watermark included in the capture of the portion of the rendered document; and

based upon the identified watermark, determining that the rendered document is protected by copyright.

15. The method of claim 13, further comprising:

identifying text included in the capture of the portion of the rendered document; and

based upon the identified text, determining that the rendered document is protected by copyright.

16. The method of claim 13, further comprising:

identifying an electronic document corresponding to the rendered document; and

based upon the identified electronic document, determining that the rendered document is protected by copyright.

17. The method of claim 16, further comprising:

identifying copyright metadata associated with the electronic document; and

based upon the identified copyright metadata, determining that the rendered document is protected by copyright.

18. The method of claim 13, further comprising:

receiving an indication that a user-selectable display element associated with the performable action for obtaining a license to the rendered document is selected; and

causing a license to the rendered document to be obtained; and

in response to the obtaining of the license to the rendered document, persistently storing the capture.

19. A computer-readable storage medium whose contents, if executed by a computing device having a processor and a memory, cause the computing device to perform a method for acquiring a use of a restricted-use rendered document, the method comprising:

temporarily storing a capture of a portion of a rendered document, the capture created by a capture component of a capture device;

based upon the capture, determining restrictions associated with use of the rendered document, wherein the restrictions are associated with an entity associated with the rendered document, and wherein the restrictions exclude persistently storing the capture;

identifying a consideration required by the entity to persistently store the capture;

determining whether the identified consideration exceeds a threshold specified by a person utilizing the capture device; and

when the consideration does not exceed the specified threshold,

automatically providing the identified consideration to the entity; and

persistently storing the capture.
