Behavior and Appearance of Touch-Optimized User Interface Elements for Controlling Computer Function
First Claim
1. A machine-implemented method comprising:
- rendering a plurality of graphical user interface (GUI) elements on a display screen, wherein one or more of the GUI elements have a common affinity;
retrieving one or more user configurable rendering properties that correspond to a selected one of the one or more GUI elements, wherein the configurable rendering properties are selected from the group consisting of a shape property and a size property;
rendering the selected GUI element on the display screen using the retrieved user configurable rendering properties;
receiving, at the display screen, a gesture directed toward the rendered selected GUI element; and
launching a software function that corresponds to the selected GUI element in response to the received gesture.

Abstract
An approach is provided that renders graphical user interface (GUI) elements, such as tiles or icons, on display screen. Some of the tiles correspond to software functions. User configurable rendering properties are retrieved that correspond to one of the GUI elements. The configurable rendering properties include a shape property or size property. The selected tile is then rendered on the display screen using the rendering properties. A gesture, directed toward the rendered GUI element, is received at the touch-enabled display screen. If the GUI element corresponds to a software function, the software function is launched in response to one or more of the gestures, such as a “tap” gesture.
