Abstract

This invention relates generally to nucleic acid sequences encoding proteins that are associated with abiotic stress responses and abiotic stress tolerance in plants. This invention further relates to transformed plant cells with altered metabolic activity compared to a corresponding non transformed wild type plant cell, wherein the metabolic activity is altered by transformation with a Stress-Related Protein (SRP) coding nucleic acid and results in increased tolerance and/or resistance to an environmental stress as compared to a corresponding non-transformed wild type plant cell.

Claims

1. A transgenic plant cell with altered metabolic activity compared to a corresponding non transformed wild type plant cell, wherein the metabolic activity of the transgenic plant cell is altered by transformation with a Stress-Related Protein (SRP) coding nucleic acid which results in increased tolerance and/or resistance to an environmental stress as compared to a corresponding non-transformed wild type plant cell.

2. The transgenic plant cell of claim 1 wherein the metabolic activity is altered by transformation with a Stress-Related Protein (SRP) coding nucleic acid selected from the group consisting of:

3. The transgenic plant cell of claim 1 derived from a monocotyledonous plant or from a dicotyledonous plant.

4. The transgenic plant cell of claim 1, derived from a gymnosperm plant.

5. A transgenic plant generated from the plant cell according to claim 1 and which is a monocotyledonous or dicotyledonous plant.

6. A transgenic plant generated from the plant cell according to claim 1 and which is a gymnosperm plant.

7. A seed produced by the transgenic plant of claim 5, wherein the seed is genetically homozygous for a transgene conferring altered metabolic activity resulting in an increased tolerance to environmental stress as compared to a corresponding non-transformed wild type plant.

A nucleic acid construct which confers the expression of the nucleic acid molecule of claim 9, comprising the nucleic acid molecule of claim 9 and one or more regulatory elements, whereby expression of the nucleic acid molecule in a host cell results altered metabolic activity resulting in increased tolerance to environmental stress as compared to a corresponding non-transformed wild type host cell.

11. A vector comprising the nucleic acid molecule as claimed in claim 9, whereby expression of the nucleic acid in a host cell results in altered metabolic activity resulting in increased tolerance to environmental stress as compared to a corresponding non-transformed wild type host cell.

12. A host cell, which has been transformed stably or transiently with the nucleic acid molecule as claimed in claim 9.

14. A method of producing a transgenic plant with altered metabolic activity compared to a corresponding non transformed wild type plant cell, wherein the metabolic activity is altered by expression of a Stress-Related Protein (SRP) coding nucleic acid which results in modified tolerance and/or resistance to an environmental stress as compared to a corresponding non-transformed wild type plant cell, comprising

a. transforming a plant cell with the vector according to claim 11 and
