Abstract

The subject invention provides conductive stripes, suitable for use as electrodes, and methods of making conductive stripes.

21. A method of making a sensor comprising an electrode, the electrode comprising a conductive layer and an insoluble reactive layer over the conductive layer, wherein the method comprises:

sputtering a layer of silver on a substrate to produce the conductive layer; and

applying an insoluble layer over the conductive layer.

22. The method of claim 21, wherein sputtering a layer of silver on the substrate comprises sputtering a layer of silver having a thickness of between 100 to 2000 angstroms.

23. The method of claim 22, wherein sputtering a layer of silver on the substrate comprises sputtering a layer of silver having a thickness of between 100 to 200 angstroms.

24. The method of claim 21, wherein the insoluble layer comprises a first material and a second material.

25. The method of claim 24, wherein the insoluble layer is applied by simultaneously sputtering the first material and the second material over the conductive layer.

26. The method of claim 25, wherein simultaneously sputtering a first material and a second material comprises sputtering a first material from a first sputtering target and sputtering a second material from a second sputtering target.

27. The method of claim 25, wherein simultaneously sputtering a first material and a second material comprises sputtering the first material and the second material from a single sputtering target.

28. The method of claim 24, wherein the first material is silver and the second material is silver chloride.

29. The method of claim 28, wherein the second material is colloidal silver chloride.

30. The method of claim 24, wherein the ratio of the first material to second material ranges between 20:

80 and 80;

31. The method of claim 30, wherein the ratio of the first material to the second material is 30:

32. The method of claim 24, wherein the method further comprises applying sensing chemistry to the electrode.

33. The method of claim 32, wherein the sensing chemistry comprises an analyte responsive enzyme and a mediator.

34. The method of claim 33, wherein the sensing chemistry is applied to the electrode with the first material and the second material.

35. The method of claim 21, wherein the sensor further comprises a working electrode and a counter electrode, and wherein the counter electrode comprises the conductive layer and the insoluble reactive layer over the conductive layer.

36. The method of claim 21, wherein the reactive layer is sputtered as a liquid.

37. The method of claim 21, wherein the method further comprises sputtering the reactive layer with at least one of a surfactant, a surface modifier, a viscosity modifier, or a thickener.

38. The method of claim 21, wherein the substrate is an inert substrate.
