Abstract

A system and method for establishing and maintaining an “always-on” data connection to a wireless network through the use of a back off timer and a service check timer is disclosed. The back off timer is initialized to a determined value when a connection is not established. When the timer expires, a connection attempt is made. As further connection attempts are made, the back off timer is set to ever-increasing values. When the data connection is established, the service check timer is initialized. The data connection status is determined at the expiry of the service check timer. When, at the expiry of the service check timer, the data connection is determined to be lost, the connection method is employed.

Claims

2. A method according to claim 1, further comprising

if the subsequent attempt is not successful, setting the timer to a maximum time period;

and

making further attempts to initiate a data connection after the maximum time on the timer has expired.

1. A method of in a mobile device, the method comprising:

making an attempt to initiate a data connection with a wireless network;

if the attempt is not successful, setting a timer to a first time period and making a another attempt to initiate a data connection with the wireless network after the first time period expires;

if the other attempt is not successful, setting the timer to a second time period greater than the first time period, and making a subsequent attempt after the second time period expires.

3. A method according to claim 2, further comprising

making a number of other attempts to initiate a data connection before making the subsequent attempt and on each occasion an other attempt is not successful increasing the second time period.

4. A method according to claim 2, further comprising

if the subsequent attempt is successful, initiating a service check timer and checking a status of the data connection upon expiry of the service check timer.

5. A method according to claim 4, further comprising

if the data connection is determined to be lost upon checking the status of the data connection, reinitializing the timer to the first time period;

and,

preventing further attempts to initiate the data connection at least until the first time period expires.

6. A method according to claim 5, further comprising

reinitializing the timer based on a timer initializer seed with a random value.

7. A method according to claim 5, wherein determining that the data connection has been lost includes receiving a refusal of service message from the wireless network.

8. A method according to claim 7, where the refusal of service message is one of a Retry Order, Release Order, Reorder Order and an Intercept Order.

9. A method according to claim 8, further comprising

setting the first time period at least equal to a minimum retry period provided in the Retry Order.

10. A method according to claim 9, further comprising

making a further attempt to initiate data connection after the minimum retry period expires.

10-1. A method according to claim 8, wherein the refusal of service message is an Intercept order, the method further comprising:

automatically attempting to initiate a data connection in response to the receipt of the Intercept Order or upon detection of a new wireless network different from the wireless network that sent the Intercept Order.

11. A method according to claim 10, further comprising

if the further attempt is unsuccessful, reinitializing the timer to a period equal to or longer than a previous timer period;

and

repeatedly making further attempts to initiate data connection after the reinitialized timer expires.

12. A mobile device according to claim 11, further comprising:

a service check timer for timing a service check period after which a status of a previously established data connection is checked, and

the connection manager for automatically transmitting connection requests upon determination that the previously established data connection has been lost.

13. A mobile device according to claim 12, wherein connection manager includes an accumulator for tracking consecutive rejections of service, and means to reset the back off timer in accordance with the number of consecutive rejections.

14. A mobile device according to claim 13, wherein the wireless network is a CDMA2000 network.

15. A mobile device according to claim 14, wherein the connection manager includes means to reset the back off timer in response to the receipt of one of a Retry Order, a Reorder Order and a Release Order.

16. A mobile device according to claim 15, wherein the connection manager includes means for causing premature expiry of the service check timer in response to the receipt of a Release Order.

17. A mobile device according to claim 15, wherein the means to reset the back off timer includes means to reset the back off timer such that the back off time is greater than, or equal to, a retry delay determined in response to a Retry Order or a Release Order.

11-2. A mobile device for establishing a data connection to a wireless network, the mobile device comprising:

a back off timer for timing a back off period between persistent retries to establish the data connection; and

a connection manager for transmitting connection requests to the wireless network upon initialization and upon expiry of the back off timer; and

for resetting the back off timer in response to receipt of a connection rejection from the wireless network.
