Abstract

A shock wave applicator includes a shock wave generator and an asymmetrical reflector portion in a housing. Asymmetry of the reflector portion is combined with one or more wave generators to produce a variety of focal volumes and wave fronts for medical treatment.

Claims

1. A shock wave device comprising a housing enclosed with a membrane and one or more shock wave generators disposed within an asymmetrical reflector portion within the housing.

2. The shock wave device of claim 1 wherein the asymmetrical reflector portion defines a continuous interior within the housing.

3. The shock wave device of claim 1 wherein the housing is symmetrical.

4. The shock wave device of claim 1 further comprising a plurality of shock wave generators each having an individually distinct reflector portion.

5. The shock wave device of claim 4 wherein two or more reflector portions are asymmetrical.

6. The shock wave device of claim 5 wherein the housing is symmetrical.

7. The shock wave device of claim 4 wherein two or more distinct reflector portions have different shapes.

8. The shock wave device of claim 7 wherein each of the two or more different shapes is a shape selected from the group consisting of a parabolic shape, elliptical shape, spherical shape and cylindrical shape.

9. The shock wave device of claim 1 wherein the housing includes two or more reflector portions having two or more different shapes.

10. The shock wave device of claim 9 wherein each of the two or more different shapes is a shape selected from the group consisting of a parabolic shape, elliptical shape, spherical shape and cylindrical shape.

11. The shock wave device of claim 1 further comprising an aperture defining an aperture plane covered by the membrane wherein the asymmetrical reflector portion is a portion of a full shape having an axial plane of symmetry intersection the aperture plane at other than a right angle.

12. The shock wave device of claim 1 further comprising an aperture covered by the membrane with a size and shape that is no bigger than an opening between adjacent ribs protecting cardiac tissue targeted for treatment.

13. The shock wave device of claim 12 wherein the one or more shock wave generators include an electrohydraulic generator.

14. The shock wave device of claim 1 wherein the one or more shock wave generators include an electrohydraulic generator.

15. The shock wave device of claim 1 comprising a plurality of electrohydraulic shock wave generators.

16. The shock wave device of claim 5 wherein the one or more shock wave generators include an electrohydraulic generator.

17. The shock wave device of claim 12 comprising a plurality of electrohydraulic shock wave generators.
