Abstract

A system and method for making vehicle originated calls to a telematics service provider or other call center. The method includes identifying a call type associated with a desired wireless communication of speech or data to the call center, and then carrying out one of a number of different call connection processes depending on the call type. For voice channel cellular connections, an in-band modem cellular connection is preferably established in most instances using a connection retry strategy that includes primary, secondary, and possibly tertiary connection attempts each of which utilize at least one of a number of different voice and data call origination processes. The system and method can be carried out in connection with various cellular system technologies, but is especially suited for use with GSM systems.

Claims

1. A packet data origination method for use by a vehicle telematics unit to provide a wireless data communication from the telematics unit to a call center, comprising the steps of:

(a) determining if there is an existing packet data protocol (PDP) context for the telematics unit;

(b) carrying out a nested iterative process to obtain a new PDP context if no existing PDP context is found in step (a);

(c) obtaining a packet data connection to the call center via either the existing PDP context or the new PDP context; and

(d) transmitting data over the packet data connection from the telematics unit to the call center.

A packet data origination method as defined in claim 1, wherein the method further comprises the steps of determining, when an existing PDP context is found, whether there is an existing packet data connection is available between the telematics unit and call center and, if so, using the existing packet data connection to transmit the data, and if not, then attempting to establishing a new packet data connection between the telematics unit and call center.

A packet data origination method as defined in claim 2, wherein the step of attempting to establish a new packet data connection further comprises the step of starting a retransmission timer, transmitting packet data to the call center, incrementing a counter if the timer expires before the new packet data connection is established, and re-attempting to establish the new packet data connection.

4. A packet data origination method as defined in claim 3, further comprising the steps of determining if the counter has reached a specified maximum limit and carrying out the re-attempting step if the limit has not been reached.

5. A packet data origination method as defined in claim 1, wherein step (b) further comprises the steps of carrying out a connection management procedure and an activation procedure.

A packet data origination method as defined in claim 5, wherein step (c) further comprises obtaining a packet data connection between the telematics unit and call center over a GRPS network, and wherein step (b) further comprises carrying out a GPRS attach procedure, and wherein the step of carrying out an activation procedure further comprises establishing the new PDP context over the GRPS network.

A packet data origination method as defined in claim 6, wherein step (b) further comprises carrying out the nested iterative process using an outer iterative loop that includes the GPRS attach procedure and connection management procedure and an inner iterative loop that includes the activation procedure.

8. A packet data origination method as defined in claim 7, wherein the connection management procedure includes the step of communicating with a base station to receive assigned packet data channels.

9. A packet data origination method as defined in claim 7, wherein each loop includes a counter and comprises carrying out multiple iterations of the loop until its procedure is successful or its counter reaches a specified maximum limit.

10. A packet data origination method as defined in claim 9, further comprising the step of incrementing the counter of the outer loop each time the counter of the inner loop reaches its maximum limit.

11. A packet data origination method as defined in claim 1, wherein step (d) further comprises determining whether encrypted transmission of the data is desired based on the data being transmitted.

12. A packet data origination method for use by a vehicle telematics unit to provide a wireless data communication over a GPRS network from the telematics unit to a call center, comprising the steps of:

(a) determining if there is an existing packet data protocol (PDP) context for the telematics unit;

(b) carrying out a GPRS attach procedure, connection management procedure, and a PDP context activation procedure if no existing PDP context is found in step (a), wherein the connection management procedure includes the step of receiving packet data channel assignments, and the PDP context activation procedure includes the steps of confirming that a new PDP context exists, determining that a packet uplink assignment has been received by the telematics unit, and sending a packet control acknowledgement over an assigned packet associated control channel;

(c) obtaining a packet data connection to the call center via either the existing PDP context or the new PDP context; and

(d) transmitting data over the packet data connection from the telematics unit to the call center.
