Abstract

Transmitting information using a preamble of a Random Access Channel (RACH) in an Evolved Universal mobile Telecommunications System (E-UMTS) is provided. A preamble transmission is used to inform a base station of specific information when a terminal uses a RACH and the base station efficiently allocates radio resources for data transmission to the terminal according to the specific information. Delay time before the terminal transmits data is reduced and unnecessary consumption of radio resources is minimized.

21. A method for allocating radio resources in a mobile communication system, the method comprising:

receiving, by a mobile terminal, a system information block (SIB) including grouping information for a random access procedure;

selecting, by the mobile terminal, at least one preamble group according to a size of a message to be transmitted by the mobile terminal and a pathloss;

randomly selecting, by the mobile terminal, at least one preamble within the selected at least one preamble group; and

transmitting, by the mobile terminal, the selected at least one preamble.

22. The method of claim 21, wherein the size of the message is related with data available for the transmission plus a medium access control (MAC) header and/or MAC control elements.

23. The method of claim 21, wherein the SIB is a random access channel (RACH) configuration common information element.

24. The method of claim 21, wherein the selected at least one preamble is used for accessing a Random Access Channel (RACH).

25. The method of claim 21, wherein the at least one preamble is selected within the selected at least one preamble group with equal probability.

26. A method for allocating radio resources in a mobile communication system, the method comprising:

receiving, by a mobile terminal, a system information block (SIB), wherein the SIB includes grouping information for a first preamble group and a second preamble group;

selecting, by the mobile terminal, the first preamble group if the first preamble group exists and a potential message size is greater than a message size of the second preamble group, and selecting the second preamble group if a pathloss is less than a threshold;

randomly selecting, by the mobile terminal, at least one preamble within the selected first or second preamble group; and

transmitting, by the mobile terminal, the selected at least one preamble.

27. The method of claim 26, wherein the potential message size is related with data available for transmission plus a medium access control (MAC) header and/or MAC control elements.

28. The method of claim 26, wherein the SIB is a random access channel (RACH) configuration common information element.

29. The method of claim 26, wherein the selected at least one preamble is used for accessing a Random Access Channel (RACH).

30. The method of claim 26, wherein the at least one preamble is selected within the selected first or second preamble group with equal probability.

31. A mobile communication apparatus, comprising:

a receiving unit configured to receive a system information block (SIB) including grouping information for a random access procedure; and

a control unit configured to;

select at least one preamble group according to a size of a message to be transmitted by a mobile terminal and a pathloss;

randomly select at least one preamble within the selected at least one selected preamble group; and

transmit the selected at least one preamble.

32. The apparatus of claim 31, wherein the size of the message is related with data available for transmission plus a medium access control (MAC) header and/or MAC control elements.

33. The apparatus of claim 31, wherein the SIB is a random access channel (RACH) configuration common information element.

34. The apparatus of claim 31, wherein the selected at least onepreamble is used for accessing a Random Access Channel (RACH).

35. The apparatus of claim 31, wherein the at least one preamble is selected within the selected at least one preamble group with equal probability.

36. A mobile communication apparatus, comprising:

a receiving unit configured to receive a system information block (SIB), wherein the SIB includes grouping information for a first preamble group and a second preamble group; and

a control unit configured to;

select the first preamble group if the first preamble group exists and a potential message size is greater than a message size of the second preamble group;

select the second preamble group if a pathloss is less than a threshold,

randomly select at least one preamble within the selected first or second preamble group; and

transmit the selected at least one preamble.

37. The apparatus of claim 36, wherein the potential message size is related with data available for transmission plus a medium access control (MAC) header and/or MAC control elements.

38. The apparatus of claim 36, wherein the SIB is a random access channel (RACH) configuration common information element.

39. The apparatus of claim 36, wherein the selected at least one preamble is used for accessing a Random Access Channel (RACH).
