1. A method for enhancing an interaction of a user with a machine, comprising the steps of:
- (a) enabling the user to control movement of a physical component of the machine, to accomplish a defined task;
(b) sensing the movement of the physical component caused by the user, producing a signal that is indicative of the movement;
(c) in response to the signal, displaying a virtual representation of the task to the subject;
(d) distorting one or more characteristics of the movement caused by the user in carrying out the task, as displayed to the user in the virtual representation, but to a degree limited such that distortion of the one or more characteristics is not perceived by the user; and
(e) encouraging the user to respond to the virtual representation for which the one or more characteristics were distorted, as viewed by the user, so that the user modifies the movement of the physical component based on a perception of the virtual representation by the user, due to the distortion of the one or more characteristics.

Abstract
A safe, purely dissipative, robotic device and method for rehabilitation of large whole body movements, for example, in stroke victims. Shifting to passive actuation fundamentally changes common control strategies that work well for active devices. The novel approach distorts visual feedback to the subjects as a first step to achieve the desired controllability hereto limited by passivity constraints. With visual distortion, a subject'"'"'s arm trajectory can be altered in a way that passive actuation alone cannot. Results show that subjects involuntarily changed their path motion up to 30% with distortion applied. This ability to steer user'"'"'s movements can be harnessed to offset controllability issues.

10. A system for enhancing an interaction with a user, comprising:

(a) a movable component configured to be moved by a user when carrying out a defined task and having one or more sensors for detecting movement of the component by the user and producing an output signal indicative of the movement; (b) a display configured to enable the user to view a virtual representation of the movement while the user is carrying out the task; and (c) a controller coupled to receive the signal and operative to drive the display so that one or more characteristics of the movement are distorted when the virtual representation of movement caused by the user is displayed, but to a degree limited such that distortion of the one or more characteristics is not perceived by the user, and so that as the user views the virtual representation of the movement on the display, the user modifies the movement of the physical component based on a perception of the virtual representation by the user, due to the distortion of the one or more characteristics. - View Dependent Claims (11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20)
