Abstract
A method for IP [=Internet Protocol] communication between a mobile terminal and its correspondent node in a mobile radio network. The method comprises establishing (2-2) an IP connection between the mobile terminal and its correspondent node. After detecting a period of inactivity in the IP connection, (2-4) keep-alive messages are sent via the IP connection at predetermined intervals, which are varied. The method comprises monitoring (2-6) the lengths of several periods of inactivity at which the mobile radio network disconnects the IP connection. Based on the monitored lengths of periods of inactivity, a maximum interval (TINT) between keep-alive messages is determined (2-8) such that the maximum interval meets a predetermined criterion of statistical confidence, and the interval between keep-alive messages is set (2-10) to the maximum interval (TINT).

10. A method of maintaining a connection between a mobile terminal and a network element, comprising:

exchanging a plurality of keep alive messages between the mobile terminal and the network element using an Internet Protocol connection, the plurality of keep alive messages being arranged in a sequence with successive keep alive messages in the sequence being separated by a time interval; altering the time interval in a variable manner; monitoring the Internet Protocol connection to determine if it is disconnected; determining a maximum value for the time interval, the maximum value being the largest value for the time interval such that the Internet Protocol connection is not disconnected, the maximum value satisfying a predetermined criterion of statistical confidence; and setting the time interval to be the maximum value. - View Dependent Claims (11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19)

20. A mobile terminal operative to maintain a connection between the mobile terminal and a network element, comprising:

an electronic processor programmed to execute a set of instructions; a data storage device coupled to the processor; and the set of instructions contained in the data storage device, wherein when the set of instructions are executed by the processor, the mobile terminal maintains the connection between the mobile terminal and the network element by sending a plurality of keep alive messages to the network element using an Internet Protocol connection, the plurality of keep alive messages being arranged in a sequence with successive keep alive messages in the sequence being separated by a time interval; altering the time interval in a variable manner; monitoring the Internet Protocol connection to determine if it is disconnected; determining a maximum value for the time interval, the maximum value being the largest value for the time interval such that the Internet Protocol connection is not disconnected, the maximum value satisfying a predetermined criterion of statistical confidence; and setting the time interval to be the maximum value. - View Dependent Claims (21, 22, 23, 24, 25, 26)
