1. An electrosurgical instrument having a plurality of operating modes, comprising:

  • (a) a console unit having;

    i) a monopolar output connector supplying monopolar electrosurgical currents when the unit is energized,ii) a bipolar output connector supplying bipolar electrosurgical currents when the unit is energized,(b) a handpiece connected to both the unit'"'"'s monopolar output connector and the unit'"'"'s bipolar output connector,(c) first means for selectively energizing the unit to activate the monopolar output connector or the bipolar output connector to supply monopolar or bipolar electrosurgical currents, respectively, to the handpiece,(d) an electrode mounted in the handpiece, the electrode having a first position configured to perform an electrosurgical cutting action when supplied with monopolar electrosurgical currents and a second position configured to perform a coagulation action when supplied with bipolar electrosurgical currents.
