Abstract

An occlusion device (30) includes at least one self-expanding frame (42, 44) and graft material (46). Occlusion occurs by constricting the graft material (46) at a substantially central point or at an end of the device. The constriction is sized such that a guide wire (34) is able to pass therethrough. A valve mechanism (50) includes a screen (52) made from a resilient material and which includes a closable opening (54). The valve mechanism (50) allows a guide wire to pass through the occlusion device (30) whilst an effective physical barrier is maintained after removal of the guide wire (34).

Claims

1. An occlusion device including:

a frame having a longitudinal axis for anchoring the device against an internal wall of a vessel to be occluded, the frame including a portion for contacting the internal wall of a vessel to be occluded, the wall contacting portion extending along at least part of its longitudinal axis; and

at least one occlusion membrane attached to the frame, the occlusion membrane having a portion for contacting the internal wall of a vessel to be occluded, the occlusion membrane being attached to the frame at least at its wall-contacting portion, the attachment extending about the frame, wherein the act of expanding the device within a vessel causes the occlusion membrane to form a physical barrier within a vessel to be occluded.

2. The occlusion device of claim 1 wherein the device includes a guidewire receiving element.

3. The occlusion device of claim 2 wherein the guidewire receiving element includes a closable opening.

4. The occlusion device of claim 3 wherein the closable opening is formed in a screen extending across a lumen of the device.

5. The occlusion device of claim 4 wherein the closable opening is formed in a screen extending across a constricted portion of the device.

6. The occlusion device of claim 1 wherein the device includes a constriction, the constriction being located centrally in one of the longitudinal direction and the radial direction.

7. The occlusion device of claim 1 wherein the occlusion membrane forms at least one substantially conical portion in the expanded state.

8. The occlusion device of claim 1 wherein the device is bidirectional and wherein the occlusion membrane forms two substantially conical portions in the expanded state.

9. The occlusion device of claim 1 wherein the device is substantially hourglass-shaped.

10. The occlusion device of claim 1 wherein the occlusion membrane is graft material.

11. The occlusion device of claim 1 wherein the device includes a constriction, and wherein the occlusion membrane extends from the constriction to the frame.

12. The occlusion device of claim 1 wherein the occlusion membrane extends at least partially over an exterior of the frame.

13. The occlusion device of claim 1 wherein the occlusion membrane is not fabricated from a bioabsorbable material.

15. The occlusion device of claim 1 further comprising:

at least one frame;

at least one valve, the valve having a diameter less than the diameter of a vessel to be occluded, the valve including a transverse screen, the screen including a closable opening for a guide wire; and

graft material extending from the frame to the valve.

16. The occlusion device of claim 15, wherein the device includes a first frame and a second frame, the first frame provided at a proximal end of the device and the second frame provided at a distal end of the device;

wherein the valve is arranged substantially centrally between the first and second frames, and wherein the graft material extends from the first frame to the valve and from the second frame to the valve.

14. An occlusion device comprising:

a tubular member;

a first conical member provided at a distal end of the tubular member, the apex of the cone pointing in the distal direction; and

a second conical member provided at a proximal end of the tubular member, the apex of the cone pointing in the proximal direction, wherein at least one of the first conical member and the second conical member are provided with overlying graft material.

17. A kit for occluding a vessel, the kit comprising:

a frame having a longitudinal axis for anchoring the device against an internal wall of a vessel to be occluded, the frame including a portion for contacting the internal wall of a vessel to be occluded, the wall contacting portion extending along at least part of its longitudinal axis; and

at least one occlusion membrane attached to the frame, the occlusion membrane having a portion for contacting the internal wall of a vessel to be occluded, the occlusion membrane being attached to the frame at least at its wall-contacting portion, the attachment extending about the frame, wherein the act of expanding the device within a vessel causes the occlusion membrane to form a physical barrier within a vessel to be occluded, wherein the guidewire receiving element includes a closable opening and wherein the device includes a constriction, the constriction being located centrally in one of the longitudinal direction and the radial direction.
