Abstract

An antenna coupled to a wireless communication device is comprised of a conductive component, such as a series of conductive elements, that forms a conductor if placed under a threshold force. The conductor is coupled to the wireless communication device so that the wireless communication device is capable of communicating at an operating frequency defined by the length and construction of the conductor. By communicating using the conductor as an antenna, the wireless communication device may provide an indication of force to an interrogation reader. Furthermore, a conductive support element, such as a tuning ring, may be used for communication as well as coupling the conductive component to the wireless communication device. Multiple conductive components may be coupled to the wireless communication device for communicating at multiple frequencies if placed under multiple threshold forces.

Claims

1. A method of wirelessly communicating information, the method comprising:

placing a series of conductive elements under a threshold force, wherein the conductive elements couple together to form a conductor that is configured to resonate at a first frequency; and

communicating information at the first frequency using the series of conductive elements as a first antenna while the series of conductive elements is configured to resonate at the first frequency.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein prior to said placing a series of conductive elements under a threshold force, the series of conductive elements does not form a conductor that is configured to resonate at the first frequency.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein said placing a series of conductive elements under a threshold force comprises stretching the series of conductive elements.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein said placing a series of conductive elements under a threshold force comprises compressing the series of conductive elements.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein said placing a series of conductive elements under a threshold force comprises rotating the series of conductive elements.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein the series of conductive elements is coupled to a tuning ring, and wherein the method further comprises communicating information at a second frequency using the tuning ring as a second antenna.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein said placing a series of conductive elements under a threshold force further comprises:

placing the series of conductive elements under a first force to form a first conductor length configured to operate at the first frequency in a first mode of operation; and

placing the series of conductive elements under a second force to form a second conductor length configured to operate at a second frequency in a second mode of operation.

8. The method of claim 7, wherein said placing a series of conductive elements under a threshold force further comprises:

placing the first force on a first set of conductive elements in the series of conductive elements; and

placing the second force on a second set of conductive elements in the series of conductive elements that is located adjacent to the first set of conductive elements.

9. The method of claim 1, further comprising locking the series of conductive elements placed under the threshold force into a conducting position.

10. The method of claim 1, wherein said placing a series of conductive elements under a threshold force comprises changing a dimension of the series of conductive elements to expand or contract in relation to temperature.

11. The method of claim 1, wherein said communicating information comprises reporting threshold force information from a wireless communication device that is interrogated by an interrogation device.

12. The method of claim 1, further comprising communicating the information at a second frequency using a conductive support element coupled between the series of conductive elements and a wireless communication device if the series of conductive elements is not under the threshold force.

13. The method of claim 1, wherein the series of conductive elements is a series of hollow conductive elements connected by conductive links that couple the conductive elements together if under the threshold force.

14. A method of wirelessly communicating information, the method comprising:

placing a first conductive component coupled to a wireless communication component under a first threshold force, wherein the first conductive component is configured to resonate at a first frequency if placed under the first threshold force;

communicating information at the first frequency using the first conductive component as an antenna;

placing a second conductive component coupled to the wireless communication component under a second threshold force, wherein the second conductive component is configured to resonate at a second frequency if placed under the second threshold force; and

communicating information at the second frequency using the second conductive component as an antenna.

15. The method of claim 14, wherein the first conductive component is a first series of conductive elements configured to couple together and form a conductor that resonates at the first frequency if placed under the first threshold force.

16. The method of claim 15, wherein the second conductive component is a conductive support element that couples the first series of conductive elements to the wireless communication component and reduces strain on the wireless communication component caused by the series of conductive elements.

17. The method of claim 15, wherein the second conductive component is a second series of conductive elements configured to couple together and form a conductor that resonates at the second frequency if placed under the second threshold force.

18. A device, comprising:

a wireless communication component; and

a series of conductive elements coupled to the wireless communication component and configured such that, if placed under a threshold force, the conductive elements in the series of conductive elements couple together to form a conductor that resonates at a first frequency for communicating information from the wireless communication component.

19. The device of claim 18, further configured such that, if the conductive elements are not placed under the threshold force, the conductive elements do not form a conductor that resonates at the first frequency.

20. The device of claim 18, further comprising a conductive support element that couples the series of conductive elements to the wireless communication component.

21. The device of claim 20, wherein the conductive support element is configured to communicate information from the wireless communication component at a second frequency if the conductive elements are not placed under the threshold force.

22. The device of claim 18, wherein the conductive elements are hollow conductive elements connected by moveable conductive links configured to couple the conductive elements together to form the conductor if placed under the threshold force.

23. A device, comprising:

a wireless communication component;

a first conductive component coupled to the wireless communication component, wherein the first conductive component is configured to resonate at a first frequency for communicating information from the wireless communication component if a first threshold force is applied to the device; and

a second conductive component coupled to the wireless communication component, wherein the second conductive component is configured to resonate at a second frequency for communicating information from the wireless communication component if a second threshold force is applied to the device.

24. The device of claim 23, wherein the first conductive component is a first series of conductive elements that are configured to couple together and form a conductor that resonates at the first frequency if placed under the first threshold force.

25. The device of claim 24, wherein the second conductive component is a conductive support element that couples the first series of conductive elements to the wireless communication component and reduces strain on the wireless communication component caused by the series of conductive elements.

26. The device of claim 24, wherein the second conductive component is a second series of conductive elements that are configured to couple together and form a conductor that resonates at the second frequency if placed under the second threshold force.

27. A method comprising:

coupling a first conductive component to a wireless communication device, wherein the first conductive component is configured to resonate at a first frequency for communicating information from the wireless communication device if placed under a first threshold force; and

coupling a second conductive component to the wireless communication device, wherein the second conductive component is configured to resonate at a second frequency for communicating information from the wireless communication device if placed under a second threshold force,

wherein the first and second conductive components are configured to not resonate at the respective first and second frequencies if the first and second conductive components are not placed under the respective first and second threshold forces.

28. The method of claim 27, further comprising communicating information at the first frequency using the first conductive component as an antenna while the first conductive component is placed under the first threshold force.

29. The method of claim 27, further comprising communicating information at the second frequency using the second conductive component as an antenna while the second conductive component is placed under the second threshold force.

30. The method of claim 27, further comprising:

coupling a conductive support element to the wireless communication device; and

coupling the first conductive component to the conductive support element, wherein the conductive support element is configured to resonate at a third frequency for communicating information from the wireless communication device if the first conductive component is not placed under the first threshold force.
