Abstract

Techniques are provided for detecting stroke within a patient using an implantable medical device. In one example, various electrocardiac and physiological signals are sensed within the patient by the implantable device. The device derives a set of indices from the sensed signals based on parameters affected by stroke. Stroke is then detected within the patient based on an examination of the set of indices. Warnings can then be generated, neurostimulation delivered, pacing therapy adjusted, medications dispensed, etc., in response to the stroke. In one particular example, the set of indices includes: a heart rate variability index; a heart rate turbulence index; a baroreflex index; a QT index; a respiration index; and a circadian variability index, from which a composite stroke index is derived. Time delta indices may also be generated for each individual index, which are exploited in generating the composite stroke index.

Claims

9-1. The method of claim 1 wherein detecting a stroke event based on an examination of the plurality of indices includes:

deriving a composite stroke index from the plurality of indices; and

detecting the indication of stroke based on changes in the composite stroke index.

19. A system for detecting a stroke event for use with an implantable medical device for implant within a patient, the system comprising:

an electrocardiac signal sensor;

a physiological signal sensor;

a multiple parameter stroke index generation unit operative to derive a plurality of indices from electrocardiac signals and physiological signals based on parameters affected by stroke; and

an index-based stroke detector operative to detect a stroke event within the patient based on an examination of the plurality of indices.

20. A system for detecting a stroke event for use by an implantable medical device for implant within a patient, the system comprising:

means for sensing electrocardiac signals within the patient;

means for sensing physiological signals within the patient;

means for deriving a plurality of indices from the electrocardiac signals and the physiological signals based on parameters affected by stroke; and

means for detecting a stroke event within the patient based on an examination of the plurality of indices.
