Abstract

A system for locating and identifying an acoustic event such as gunfire. The inventive system employs a plurality of man wearable acoustic sensors for detecting gunfire, each acoustic sensor having a display associated therewith for displaying information concerning the acoustic event to a user. In preferred embodiments, the sensor includes a microphone for receiving acoustic information; an A/D converter; a processor for processing the digitized signal to detect a gunshot and determine a time of arrival; a GPS receiver for determining the position of the acoustic sensor; and a network interface for bidirectional communication with a system server. Preferably the display comprises: an LCD; and an electronically readable compass. When the display and acoustic sensor are in separate housings, the acoustic sensor includes a transmitter and the display includes a receiver for transferring the gunshot information.

3. A portable device configured to use with a gunshot location system having at least one sensor, the device comprising:

a housing having a shape and size enabling portable association with a person; and

a network interface that receives data transmitted by the gunshot location system via a wireless network, wherein the data comprises positional information regarding a source location for a gunshot;

a processing component configured to use time of arrival (TOA) information, from multiple, spatially separate sensors and associated with muzzle blasts as well as known positions of the sensors to calculate a location of the gunshot; and

a display that displays the positional information.

4. The portable device of claim 3 further comprising a GPS receiver, wherein the positional information is displayed relative to a location of the portable device provided by the GPS.

5. The portable device of claim 3 further comprising a housing worn about a wrist of a user.

6. The portable device of claim 3 wherein the display is configured for association with a helmet.

7. The portable device of claim 3 wherein the display is configured for association with a weapon.

8. The portable device of claim 7 wherein the display is integrated with a weapon sighting device.

9. The portable device of claim 3 wherein the display is integrated in a vehicle.

10. The portable device of claim 3 wherein the display is configured to be man wearable.

11. The portable device of claim 10 wherein the sensor is man-wearable and the display is integrated with the sensor.

12. The portable device of claim 3 wherein the sensor comprises an acoustic sensor for detecting the gunshot.

13. The portable device of claim 3 wherein the device includes an electronic compass.

14. The portable device of claim 3 wherein the positional information comprises an azimuth to the source location of the gunshot.

15. The portable device of claim 3 wherein the positional information comprises a range to the source location of the gunshot.

16. The portable device of claim 3 further comprising an indication of a weapon type associated with the gunshot.

17. The portable device of claim 3 further comprising a computer.

18. The portable device of claim 3 further comprising an aural indication to warn a user.

19. The portable device of claim 3 further comprising a component that indicates friendly fire.

20. The portable device of claim 3 further comprising a map.

26. A portable device configured to use with a gunshot location system having at least one sensor, the device comprising:

a housing having a shape and size enabling portable association with a person,

a GPS receiver that identifies a position of the device;

a processing component configured to use time of arrival (TOA) information, from multiple, spatially separate sensors and associated with muzzle blasts as well as known positions of the sensors to calculate a location of the gunshot; and

a network interface that receives data transmitted by the gunshot location system via a wireless network,

wherein the data comprises positional information regarding a source location for a gunshot, and

wherein the positional information is transmitted to a center that processes commands associated with the gunshot.

27. A portable device configured to use with a gunshot location system, the device comprising:

a housing having a shape and size enabling portable association with a person,

a display associated with the housing,

a processing component configured to use time of arrival (TOA) information, from multiple, spatially separate sensors and associated with muzzle blasts as well as known positions of the sensors to calculate a location of the gunshot; and

a receiver that receives data transmitted by the gunshot location system via a wireless network,

wherein the data comprises positional information regarding a source location for a gunshot, and

wherein the positional information, including a map, is displayed on the display.
