Abstract
A system for locating and identifying an acoustic event such as gunfire. The inventive system employs a plurality of man wearable acoustic sensors for detecting gunfire, each acoustic sensor having a display associated therewith for displaying information concerning the acoustic event to a user. In preferred embodiments, the sensor includes a microphone for receiving acoustic information; an A/D converter; a processor for processing the digitized signal to detect a gunshot and determine a time of arrival; a GPS receiver for determining the position of the acoustic sensor; and a network interface for bidirectional communication with a system server. Preferably the display comprises: an LCD; and an electronically readable compass. When the display and acoustic sensor are in separate housings, the acoustic sensor includes a transmitter and the display includes a receiver for transferring the gunshot information.

3. A portable device configured to use with a gunshot location system having at least one sensor, the device comprising:

a housing having a shape and size enabling portable association with a person; and a network interface that receives data transmitted by the gunshot location system via a wireless network, wherein the data comprises positional information regarding a source location for a gunshot; a processing component configured to use time of arrival (TOA) information, from multiple, spatially separate sensors and associated with muzzle blasts as well as known positions of the sensors to calculate a location of the gunshot; and a display that displays the positional information. - View Dependent Claims (4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20)

26. A portable device configured to use with a gunshot location system having at least one sensor, the device comprising:

a housing having a shape and size enabling portable association with a person, a GPS receiver that identifies a position of the device; a processing component configured to use time of arrival (TOA) information, from multiple, spatially separate sensors and associated with muzzle blasts as well as known positions of the sensors to calculate a location of the gunshot; and a network interface that receives data transmitted by the gunshot location system via a wireless network, wherein the data comprises positional information regarding a source location for a gunshot, and wherein the positional information is transmitted to a center that processes commands associated with the gunshot.
