- receiving virtual pet information via a data network, the received virtual pet information associated with control of a virtual pet by a first user-operated game device;
first processing the virtual pet information including processing first geographic trait information associated with the pet, the first geographic trait information relating to a first geographic location associated with use of the first user-operated game device, the first geographic trait information including information indicating a trait of the pet associated with the first geographic location;
second processing the virtual pet information including processing second geographic trait information associated with the pet, the second geographic trait information relating to a second geographic location associated with use of a second user-operated game device, the second geographic trait information including information indicating a trait of the pet associated with the second geographic location; and
transmitting the second-processed virtual pet information via the data network.

a plurality of hand-held portable game devices, each hand-held portable game device comprising a user interface, a game device processor system, and a device data communications interface, the device data communications interface for communicating data via a data network with the coordinator system; and a coordinator system, the coordinator system comprising a coordinator processor system, a coordinator data storage subsystem for storing virtual pet information, and a coordinator data communications interface, the coordinator data communications interface for communicating data via the data network with the plurality of hand-held portable game devices; wherein the processor system of at least one of the coordinator system and the plurality of hand-held portable game devices is programmed or configured to provide; data communication logic, the data communicating logic configured for receiving virtual pet information via the data network, the received virtual pet information associated with control of a virtual pet by a first hand-held portable game device; first processing logic for processing the virtual pet information, the first processing logic including first geographic trait processing logic for processing first geographic trait information associated with the pet, the first geographic trait information relating to a first geographic location associated with use of the first hand-held portable game device, the first geographic trait information including information indicating a trait of the pet associated with the first geographic location; and second processing logic for processing the virtual pet information, the second processing logic including second geographic trait processing logic for processing second geographic trait information associated with the pet, the second geographic trait information relating to a second geographic location associated with use of a second hand-held portable game devices, the second geographic trait information including information indicating a trait of the pet associated with the second geographic location; wherein the data communication logic is configured for transmitting the second-processed virtual pet information via the data network to at least one other of the coordinator system and the plurality of hand-held portable game devices.
