Abstract

A method, system and devices for communicating between an Internet browser and an electronic device are described. In accordance with one embodiment, there is provided a method for communicating between a computer and an electronic device connected to the computer through a communications protocol, the computer being in communication with network resources via a communications network, the method comprising: displaying a web page including a scripting language within an Internet browser on the computer, the Internet browser including a scripting engine for executing the scripting language; providing a scripting-language capable device controller for interfacing communications between the scripting engine and the electronic device in accordance with the communications protocol connecting the computer and electronic device; receiving by the scripting-language capable device controller of first data from the electronic device through the communications protocol; sending the first data from the scripting-language capable device controller to the scripting engine of the Internet browser; and sending the first data from the Internet browser to a network server connected to the communication network.

Claims

1. A method of backing up data on a mobile device connected to a host computer, the method comprising:

displaying a web page of a web-based device management application in an Internet browser on the host computer, the web page including an interface element for inputting a request to backup data on the mobile device;

receiving, via the interface element, the request to backup data on the mobile device; and

in response to receiving the request to backup data on the mobile device;

obtaining, at the host computer, first data from the mobile device; and

storing the first data.

2. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

displaying a web-page of the web-based device management application in the Internet browser on the host computer, the web page including an interface element for inputting a request to restore data to the mobile device;

receiving, via the interface element, the request to restore data to the mobile device; and

in response to receiving the request to restore the data to the mobile device;

retrieving the stored first data; and

sending the first data to the mobile device.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein storing the first data comprises:

storing the first data in memory of the host computer.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein storing the first data comprises:

sending the first data to a remote server for storage, the remote server being connected to the host computer via a network.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein the mobile device is connected to the host computer via a Bluetooth connection.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein the first data is application data.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein the first data includes any of:

email messages, address book and contact information, calendar and schedule information, notepad documents, or image files.

8. The method of claim 1, wherein obtaining first data from the mobile device comprises:

obtaining the first data at a scripting language capable device controller; and

sending the first data to a scripting engine of the Internet browser.

9. The method of claim 1, wherein the Internet browser includes a scripting engine for executing a script included in the web page.

10. The method of claim 1, wherein the web page is a Dynamic Hypertext Markup Language (DHTML) web page.

11. A web server comprising:

a communication interface for providing one or more web pages to a host computer connected to the device; and

a memory storing a web based device management application, the web based device management application being configured to;

display, in an Internet browser on the host computer, a web page including an interface element for inputting a request to backup data on a mobile device;

receive, via the interface element, a request to backup data on the mobile device; and

in response to receiving the request to backup data on the mobile device;

obtain first data from the mobile device; and

store the first data.

12. The web server of claim 11, wherein the web based device management application is further configured to:

display a web-page in the Internet browser on the host computer, the web page including an interface element for inputting a request to restore data to the mobile device;

receive, via the interface element, the request to restore data to the mobile device; and

in response to receiving the request to restore the data to the mobile device;

retrieve the stored first data; and

send the first data to the mobile device.

13. The web server of claim 11, wherein storing the first data comprises:

storing the first data in memory of the host computer.

14. The web server of claim 11, wherein storing the first data comprises:

sending the first data to a remote server for storage, the remote server being connected to the host computer via a network.

15. The web server of claim 11, wherein the first data is application data.

16. The web server of claim 11, wherein the first data includes any of:

email messages, address book and contact information, calendar and schedule information, notepad documents, or image files.

17. The web server of claim 11, wherein obtaining first data from the mobile device comprises:

obtaining the first data at a scripting language capable device controller; and

sending the first data to a scripting engine of the Internet browser.

18. The web server of claim 11, wherein the Internet browser includes a scripting engine for executing a script included in the web page.

19. The web server of claim 11, wherein the web page is a Dynamic Hypertext Markup Language (DHTML) web page.

20. A computer readable medium having stored thereon computer program instructions for:

displaying a web page of a web-based device management application in an Internet browser on the host computer, the web page including an interface element for inputting a request to backup data of a mobile device;

receiving, via the interface element, the request to backup data on the mobile device; and

in response to receiving the request to backup data on the mobile device;

obtaining, at the host computer, first data from the mobile device; and

storing the first data.
