Abstract

A digital receiving system, and a method of processing data are disclosed. The digital receiving system includes a receiving unit, a known sequence detector, and a channel equalizer. The receiving unit receives a broadcast signal including mobile service data and main service data. The known sequence detector detects known data linearly inserted in a data group. The channel equalizer performs channel-equalizing on the received mobile service data using the detected known data.

15. A broadcast transmitting system, comprising:

a block processor for encoding mobile service data at a coding rate of 1/H, wherein H is an integer greater than 1;

a group formatter for mapping the encoded mobile service data into at least one region of a data group that has a plurality of regions, wherein the data group further includes a plurality of known data sequences, wherein at least two of the plurality of known data sequences differ from each other in length, wherein at least two of the plurality of known data sequences are spaced 16 segments apart, wherein one of the plurality of known data sequences includes a first M-symbol sequence and a second M-symbol sequence that have a first pattern, and the rest of the plurality of known data sequences include an N-symbol sequence that has a second pattern other than the first pattern, and wherein N is greater than M;

a trellis encoder for trellis encoding data being outputted from the group formatter, the trellis encoder having at least one memory that is initialized at a start of each known data sequence;

a multiplexer for multiplexing the trellis-encoded data with segment synchronization data and field synchronization data; and

a modulator for modulating a broadcast signal including the multiplexed data.

16. The broadcast transmitting system of claim 15, further comprising:

a randomizer for randomizing the mobile service data.

17. The broadcast transmitting system of claim 16, further comprising:

a Reed-Solomon (RS) encoder for RS-encoding and Cyclic Redundancy Check (CRC)-encoding the randomized mobile service data, wherein an RS frame comprises an RS frame payload including the randomized mobile service data, RS parity data added at bottom ends of columns of the RS frame payload, and CRC data added at right ends of rows of the RS frame payload including the RS parity data.

18. The broadcast transmitting system of claim 17, wherein a transmission parameter is positioned between the known data sequence having the first pattern and one of the known data sequences having the second pattern.

19. The broadcast transmitting system of claim 18, wherein the transmission parameter includes mode information indicating whether the mobile service data are encoded at the coding rate of ½

20. A method of processing broadcast data in a broadcast transmitting system, the method comprising:

encoding mobile service data at a coding rate of 1/H, wherein H is greater than 1;

mapping, by a group formatter, the encoded mobile service data into at least one region of a data group that has a plurality of regions, wherein the data group further includes a plurality of known data sequences, wherein at least two of the plurality of known data sequences differ from each other in length, wherein at least two of the plurality of known data sequences are spaced 16 segments apart, wherein one of the plurality of known data sequences includes a first M-symbol sequence and a second M-symbol sequence that have a first pattern, and the rest of the plurality of known data sequences include an N-symbol sequence that has a second pattern other than the first pattern, and wherein N is greater than M;

trellis encoding, by a trellis encoder, data being outputted from the group formatter , the trellis encoder having at least one memory that is initialized at a start of each known data sequence;

multiplexing the trellis-encoded data with segment synchronization data and field synchronization data; and

modulating a broadcast signal including the multiplexed data.

21. The method of claim 20, further comprising:

randomizing the mobile service data.

22. The method of claim 21, further comprising:

RS-encoding and CRC-encoding the randomized mobile service data, wherein an RS frame comprises an RS frame payload including the randomized mobile service data, RS parity data added at bottom ends of columns of the RS frame payload, and CRC data added at right ends of rows of the RS frame payload including the RS parity data.

23. The method of claim 22, wherein a transmission parameter is positioned between the known data sequence having the first pattern and one of the known data sequences having the second pattern.

24. The method of claim 23, wherein the transmission parameter includes mode information indicating whether the mobile service data are encoded at the coding rate of ½
