Abstract

In accordance with various embodiments, a surgical generator for providing a drive signal to a surgical device may comprise a first transformer and a second transformer. The first transformer may comprise a first primary winding and a first secondary winding. The second transformer may comprise a second primary winding and a second secondary winding. The surgical generator may further comprise a generator circuit to generate the drive signal. The generator circuit may be electrically coupled to the first primary winding to provide the drive signal across the first primary winding. The surgical generator may also comprise a patient-side circuit electrically isolated from the generator circuit. The patient-side circuit may be electrically coupled to the first secondary winding. Further, the patient-side circuit may comprise first and second output lines to provide the drive signal to the surgical device. In addition, the surgical generator may comprise a capacitor. The capacitor and the second secondary winding may be electrically coupled in series between the first output line and ground.

Claims

1. A surgical generator for providing a drive signal to a surgical device, the generator comprising:

a first transformer comprising a first primary winding and a first secondary winding;

a second transformer comprising a second primary winding and a second secondary winding;

a generator circuit to generate the drive signal, wherein the generator circuit is electrically coupled to the first primary winding to provide the drive signal across the first primary winding;

a patient-side circuit electrically isolated from the generator circuit, wherein the patient-side circuit is electrically coupled to the first secondary winding, and wherein the patient-side circuit comprises first and second output lines to provide the drive signal to the surgical device; and

a capacitor, wherein the capacitor and the second secondary winding are electrically coupled in series between the first output line and ground.

2. The surgical generator of claim 1, wherein the capacitor has a first electrode electrically coupled to the first output line and a second electrode electrically coupled to the second secondary winding.

3. The surgical generator of claim 2, wherein the second secondary winding comprises a first electrode electrically coupled to the second electrode of the capacitor and a second electrode electrically coupled to ground.

4. The surgical generator of claim 3, wherein the load resistor has a first electrode electrically coupled to the first electrode of the second secondary winding and a second electrode electrically coupled to the second electrode of the second secondary winding.

5. The surgical generator of claim 1, wherein the second secondary winding comprises a first electrode electrically coupled to the first output line and a second electrode electrically coupled to the capacitor.

6. The surgical generator of claim 1, wherein the capacitor comprises a first electrode electrically coupled to the second electrode of the second secondary winding and a second electrode electrically coupled to ground.

7. The surgical generator of claim 1, further comprising:

a correction circuit positioned in series between the capacitor and ground; and

a correction control circuit, wherein the correction circuit is programmed to;

receive input describing at least one of a current of the drive signal, a voltage of the drive signal and a load condition describing a property of tissue acted upon by the drive signal;

calculate a correction signal; and

provide the correction signal to the correction circuit;

8. The surgical generator of claim 7, wherein the correction control circuit comprises:

at least one processor;

at least one analog-to-digital converter to convert the input to digital; and

at least one digital-to-analog converter to convert the correction signal to analog.

9. The surgical generator of claim 1, wherein the capacitor is a Y-type capacitor.

10. The surgical generator of claim 1, further comprising a load resistor electrically coupled in parallel with the second secondary winding, wherein a polarity of the second secondary winding relative to second primary winding is opposite of a polarity of the first secondary winding.

11. A surgical generator for providing a drive signal to a surgical device, the generator comprising:

a first transformer comprising a primary winding, a first secondary winding, and a second secondary winding, wherein a polarity of the first secondary winding relative to the primary winding is opposite the polarity of the second secondary winding;

a generator circuit to generate the drive signal, wherein the generator circuit is electrically coupled to the first primary winding to provide the drive signal across the first primary winding;

a patient-side circuit electrically isolated from the generator circuit, wherein the patient-side circuit is electrically coupled to the first secondary winding, and wherein the patient-side circuit comprises first and second output lines to provide the drive signal to the surgical device; and

a capacitor, wherein the capacitor and second secondary winding are electrically coupled in series between the first output line and ground.

12. The surgical generator of claim 11, wherein the capacitor has a first electrode electrically coupled to the first output line and a second electrode electrically coupled to the second secondary winding.

13. The surgical generator of claim 12, wherein the second secondary winding comprises a first electrode electrically coupled to the second electrode of the capacitor and a second electrode electrically coupled to ground.

14. The surgical generator of claim 13, further comprising a load resistor electrically coupled in parallel with the second secondary winding, wherein the load resistor has a first electrode electrically coupled to the first electrode of the second secondary winding and a second electrode electrically coupled to the second electrode of the second secondary winding.

15. The surgical generator of claim 11, wherein the second secondary winding comprises a first electrode electrically coupled to the first output line and a second electrode electrically coupled to the capacitor.

16. The surgical generator of claim 11, wherein the capacitor comprises a first electrode electrically coupled to the second electrode of the second secondary winding and a second electrode electrically coupled to ground.

17. The surgical generator of claim 11, further comprising:

a correction control circuit positioned in series between the capacitor and ground; and

a correction control circuit, wherein the correction circuit is programmed to;

receive input describing at least one of a current of the drive signal, a voltage of the drive signal and a load condition describing a property of tissue acted upon by the drive signal;

calculate a correction signal; and

provide the correction signal to the correction circuit;

18. The surgical generator of claim 17, wherein the correction control circuit comprises:

at least one processor;

at least one analog-to-digital converter to convert the input to digital; and

at least one digital-to-analog converter to convert the correction signal to analog.

19. The surgical generator of claim 11, wherein the capacitor is a Y-type capacitor.

20. A surgical generator for providing a drive signal to a surgical device, the generator comprising:

a first transformer comprising a primary winding and a secondary winding;

a generator circuit to generate the drive signal, wherein the generator circuit is electrically coupled to the first primary winding to provide the drive signal across the first primary winding;

a patient-side circuit electrically isolated from the generator circuit, wherein the patient-side circuit is electrically coupled to the secondary winding, and wherein the patient-side circuit comprises first and second output lines to provide the drive signal to the surgical device;

a capacitor, wherein the capacitor and is electrically coupled to the primary winding and electrically coupled to the first output line.

21. The surgical generator of claim 20, wherein the capacitor is a Y-type capacitor.

22. A surgical generator for providing a drive signal to a surgical device, the generator comprising:

a first transformer comprising a primary winding and a secondary winding;

a generator circuit to generate the drive signal, wherein the generator circuit is electrically coupled to the first primary winding to provide the drive signal across the first primary winding;

a patient-side circuit electrically isolated from the generator circuit, wherein the patient-side circuit is electrically coupled to the secondary winding, and wherein the patient-side circuit comprises first and second output lines to provide the drive signal to the surgical device;

a first capacitor, wherein a first electrode of the first capacitor and is electrically coupled to the primary winding;

a second capacitor, wherein a first electrode of the second capacitor is electrically coupled to the first output line and a second electrode of the second capacitor is electrically coupled to a second electrode of the first capacitor;

a third capacitor, wherein the a first electrode of the third capacitor is electrically coupled to the second electrode of the first capacitor and the second electrode of the second capacitor, and wherein a second electrode of the third capacitor is electrically coupled to ground.

23. The surgical generator of claim 22, wherein the second capacitor is a Y-type capacitor.
